00:00Thank you very much.
00:30Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio.
00:34I don't know whether you saw that report that I happened to stumble across the other day about a poor chap, young fella, 25 years old, night out in Kent.
00:42You can read into that what you want.
00:44And he went for a stroll along the 300 foot high cliffs at Warren Country Park near Folkestone.
00:51And as he looked out to sea, he slipped and stumbled and fell 80 feet.
00:57And as he passed a tree, he stuck out an arm and caught it halfway down the cliff.
01:02Well, not quite halfway down, of course, the way down and hung there.
01:07His battery was on very low power, but he just managed to squeeze out a call to a pal of his who rang the emergency services.
01:16And he hung there.
01:17Can you imagine a couple of hours until they turned up and dragged him up?
01:21Have you got a fear of heights?
01:23I don't particularly like heights, but I remember I was skiing.
01:26It was actually on my birthday.
01:28Normally I ski by myself because the boys I go with are really good and I like the blue and the green runs.
01:32And we went on the same lift because it was my birthday.
01:36So we'd ski together.
01:37And the boys just said, oh, we'll just do that tiny little lift there and we'll see you down.
01:41So it will just take a couple of minutes.
01:42I was waiting half an hour at the bottom of the lift thinking, have I missed them?
01:47And I rung and Pasha was at the top of this place.
01:50He just got to a ledge where he just couldn't get down.
01:54What did he do?
01:55He just clenched and took a chance.
01:59I just have no idea.
02:00I think once you get going, you're all right.
02:02It's just the mental thing of the leap.
02:05Absolutely.
02:06No, we're not fond of heights.
02:07Good for him.
02:08Is he a good skier normally?
02:09Yeah, he's a great skier.
02:10Yeah, not that day.
02:12Let's see who's a good player of Countdown today.
02:16And that's Birkan Chelykan with three wins under his belt.
02:20Computer sciences student from Bexley.
02:23Welcome back, Birkan.
02:25Good afternoon.
02:25Playing very well indeed.
02:27Now you've got to get past Hannah Rodger.
02:30Hannah is an earth sciences student at Lancaster University from Crandy in Surrey,
02:35whose hobbies are very interesting, actually.
02:38One is trampolining.
02:40Yeah.
02:41And the other is volcanoes.
02:43And volcanoes, I guess, slots neatly into earth sciences, doesn't it?
02:46Yeah, definitely.
02:47Yeah, I think that's why I started liking it, because I studied it and I wanted to explore
02:51it further.
02:52And it took you to Mexico last summer.
02:55Yeah, so I spent three months in the summer volunteering, monitoring the volcano.
02:58No, that's fascinating.
03:00Fascinating.
03:00All right, let's have a big round of applause for Hannah and Birkan.
03:09Very good.
03:09Over in the corner, Susie, of course.
03:11I think it was W.C. Fields that said, never work with children or animals.
03:15But that does not apply to our wonderful guest, Adam Henson.
03:19Well, thank you very much.
03:22Very good.
03:23Now, let's get down to business.

10:48I was struggling on that one.
10:49Rewind was the best I had.

12:23How did you get on?
12:24What have we got on that one, Susie?
12:26Well, we have a six, which is volute.
12:29And a volute is an architectural term for a spiral scroll
12:33that you'll find at the top of a particular columns in architecture.
12:38Ionic, Corinthian, composite capitals.
12:41And that's where we'll stop.

13:31473.
13:32464.
13:33454.
13:35474.
13:36474.
13:37462.
13:38Hannah.
13:42Yeah, I've got it.
13:43And Birkin?
13:444, 6, 2, but not written down.
13:46Let's hear from you, Birkin.
13:47So, 8 minus 2.
13:498 minus 2 is 6.
13:51Times 3.
13:51Times 3 is 18.
13:53Times 25.
13:54Is 450.
13:55And add the 5 and the 7.
13:56Yep.
13:57Well done.
13:58Very good.
13:59And Hannah?
13:59Yeah, I did it the same way.
14:01There we go.
14:03Yeah.
14:04Well done.
14:07Well done.
14:08And now we turn to Adam.
14:09Adam Countryfiles.
14:10Great, great show.
14:11Takes you all over the country.
14:14Great things to see.
14:15Great things to film.
14:16And maybe you've got some memorable ones.
14:19Well, I love working on it.
14:21And as you say, a great team of people who produce the programme,
14:24but also the other presenters as well.
14:25Obviously working with the lovely John Craven is a treat.
14:28And it takes us all over the British Isles.
14:30In fact, all over the world.
14:31So I've looked at minkeye whale in Scotland,
14:34basking sharks down on the Cornish coast,
14:36bird colonies, amazing houses.
14:38We get to see some artisan producers producing great food.
14:43And we often go abroad as well.
14:45I've just got back from New Zealand, which is an amazing trip.
14:48But often you'll see the Countryfile presenters having a go
14:51at whatever they're filming.
14:53And a few years ago, I had to get involved
14:54with the World Championship Toe Wrestling Competition.
14:58So it's like arm wrestling, except you link big toes.
15:01So that hurts in its own right.
15:02And then you wrestle on the toadium with your foot.
15:05And I got through the first round, which was fine.
15:08And then this great big hairy tattooed man sat opposite me
15:12with quite smelly feet.
15:13I think he had athlete's foot, actually.
15:15And beat me.
15:16So it's not all glamour, Nick.
15:17It's not all glamour.
15:18Hold on a second.
15:19You're sitting in a chair.
15:21And opposite you, there's another bloke sitting in a chair.
15:24And you each offer the other your foot.
15:28And you link toes.
15:29And then you try and hurt each other.
15:31Until somebody says, I submit.
15:33Is that it?
15:34Well, you have to.
15:35So you're sitting on the ground opposite each other.
15:38Link big toes.
15:39And then there's a plank of wood either side of your feet.
15:41And you have to try and push the other person's foot
15:43against the plank of wood.
15:44And then you win that round.
15:46You use your right foot.
15:47And then your left foot.
15:48That's weird business.
15:49Now, I have to tell you that you're sitting opposite somebody,
15:53or next to somebody, actually,
15:54who's a tremendous arm wrestler.
15:58That slim, slight girl is pure muscle.
16:04Have a go later on.
16:05No, she's tremendous.
16:06Strong and incredibly intelligent.
16:07It's remarkable.
16:08And beautiful as well.
16:09What more could a man want?
16:10Exactly.
16:11Well, she's a great arm wrestler, too.
16:13All right.
16:13Well done.
16:14Thank you, Adam.
16:15Brilliant stuff.
16:15Now, 35 plays 28.
16:17Birkan on 35.
16:19Birkan, your letters game.
16:21Consonant, please.
16:22Thank you, Birkan.
16:23T.
16:25Consonant.
16:27P.
16:29Val.
16:30I.

16:55Stand by.
16:56A.

16:57A.
17:00I.

17:10I'll.
17:10I.
17:11I.
17:12I.
17:12Birkan.
17:27A seven.
17:28A seven.
17:29Hannah.
17:30Seven.
17:31Birkan.
17:31Partial.
17:32Partial and?
17:33Partial.
17:34Two partials.
17:35Both partial.
17:36Any advances?
17:38Adam?
17:38Well, I've got pigtail, not the agricultural pigtail,
17:41two words, but pigtail.
17:43Very good.
17:44Excellent.
17:44That's excellent.
17:45Good for seven.
17:46Pigtail.
17:47All right.
17:4742 to 35, and it's Hannah's letters again.
17:52Can I have a consonant, please?
17:53Thank you, Hannah.
17:54D.
17:55And a vowel?
17:57E.
17:58And a consonant?
18:00B.
18:01Another consonant?

18:51Bye.
18:51Bye.
18:51Bye.
18:51Yes, Hannah?
18:54A six.
18:54A six, Birkin?
18:55Six.
18:56Hannah?
18:57Lumped.
18:58Yes.
18:58And the same.
19:00There we go.
19:02Any different solutions?
19:04Well, seven here.
19:05Deplume.
19:06Deplume, to pluck.
19:08Yeah.
19:09That's a novel way of expressing it.
19:11Yes, it can also mean to strip or deprive someone of honour or status.
19:16To deplume.
19:17How interesting.
19:1948 plays 41, seven in it, and it's Birkin's numbers game.
19:22Birkin?
19:23Could I have two large and four small, please?
19:26Thank you, Birkin.
19:26Two from the top this time.
19:28Mix it up a bit.
19:28And the four little ones are ten, eight, seven, six, and the big ones, 25 and 100.
19:37And your target, 695.

20:17So let's go to Birkin first.
20:19Birkin?

24:15Both.
24:16There we go.
24:17Well done.
24:18Two good players.
24:2073 to 56.
24:22Hannah on 56.
24:23We turn to Susie and ask her for her wonderful origins of words.
24:29And today, Susie?
24:30Well, today I am going to talk about the C word.
24:34And we do call it the C word because it inspires such fear.
24:37And that's the word cancer, understandably, inspires fear.
24:41Though a lot of work has gone into removing its bite.
24:45That's a huge advances in improving the prognosis or the outcomes of cancer patients.
24:50But the origin of the term is a curious one.
24:53And we owe it really to the imagination of early surgeons who diagnosed it and then began the endeavours to cure it.
25:01And you go back to the words in Latin, which was a cancer, meaning a crab.
25:05And this, in turn, was derived from the ancient Greek word karkinos, which also meant a crab.
25:12And until the 17th century, the word cancer in English was used simply in the astrological sense.
25:18Cancer, the star sign, one of the signs of the zodiac, depicted, of course, by a crab.
25:23And just like a crab, cancerians are apparently known for their sidestepping occasionally.
25:30But also apparently the least predictable of all the star signs.
25:34Easier going on the one hand and then irritable and, well, crabby on the other.
25:39That sense of crabby, incidentally, probably goes back to the crab apple and to the occasional sour taste that you might get if you bite into one.
25:45But back to the word cancer, and around the turn of the 16th century, it was given to the medical condition called until then actually canker.
25:55And that's the word that we now reserve for a non-life-threatening ulcerous condition or indeed a disease of trees, etc.
26:02But cancer in its meaning of the more serious medical condition was said by the ancient Greek physician Galen to have got its name because of the pattern made by the distended blood vessels which surround a tumour.
26:14And they were said to resemble the claw, if you like, of a crab.
26:18And that Greek word karkinos also gave us carcinoma and, in fact, keloid.
26:22You know about keloid scars, the sort of irregular blood vessels forming around a scar.
26:27Those also go back to the idea of a crab's claw.
26:29But very innocent beginnings and harmless beginnings, really.
26:32And let's hope that one day cancer will also be a harmless word that we can utter without fear.
26:38Indeed, yeah.
26:43Absolutely.
26:4573 to 56.
26:47Birkhan in the lead and it's a letters game for Hannah.
26:51Can I have a consonant, please?

28:05Well spotted.
28:07Birkin nodding his head, Sage, you there.
28:09Now, what have we got in the corner?
28:11Sofas is a bit more homely than a fossa,
28:13which is a term from anatomy,
28:16meaning a shallow depression or hollow in an organ of the body.
28:19It goes back to the Latin for to dig, which gave us fossil as well.
28:23All right.
28:23Well done.
28:24Thank you, Susie.
28:2573 now to Hannah's, improving 61 as we go into final letters game.
