00:31Hello, everybody. Welcome to Countdown this Wednesday afternoon
00:35as two contestants engage in a game of cat and mouse
00:38over 15 rounds of letters and numbers.
00:41Rachel, Riley, it's funny how you just straight jumped
00:44to another connection.
00:46If I say to you, cat and mouse, you think of...?
00:48Tom and Jerry.
00:50Tom and Jerry, 82 years old today.
00:52Hannah Barbera first appeared in a cartoon 82 years ago.
00:5582 years! That's bonkers.
00:58It's interesting, because we often will have a conversation
01:01about our favourite cartoons and stuff, but I'm not that interested.
01:04I'm more interested in the ones you have that emotional connection to,
01:07because every time you talk cartoons, you're actually talking memories.
01:10You know, that thing that just gave you peace when you were a kid.
01:13What were the cartoons that you identified with?
01:16I don't know about identified with,
01:18but the ones that I've gone back to and tried to show my kids
01:21was Spot the Dog. Do you remember Spot the Dog?
01:23That's you, though.
01:25Spot doing something really tame and cute.
01:28That's me.
01:30There's a few. Dog Tanyan was sensational.
01:33We had Bastille Day the other day, so it's worth mentioning that.
01:39Jamie and His Magic Torch. I think I just like the theme tunes,
01:42because my favourite one was Raggy Dolls.
01:44And that had a nice message.
01:46It was...
01:48If you're not at ease with your knobbly knees
01:50and your fingers are all thumbs,
01:52stand on your two left feet and join our Raggy Doll chums.
01:55And it was about toys that were rejected because they weren't perfect.
01:59And then they lived out the back together and they formed a little gang.
02:03And it was about outsiders.
02:05Most of us as children feel that insecurity.
02:08And it had a really nice message.
02:10I mean, watch it back now. It could be different.
02:12But I loved the Raggy Dolls.
02:14You haven't gone back and revisited it?
02:16No. Funny enough, it's not streaming on Netflix.
02:18Absolutely no recollection of what you're talking about at all.
02:21That is your Christmas present sorted.
02:24Something to look forward to.
02:26Thank you, Rachel.
02:28We'll listen in on Animated Dictionary Corner
02:30all this week on Countdown.
02:32Susie Dent joined again by the man who's rubbed shoulders
02:35with some of the biggest stars in music,
02:37but is slumming it with us, Trevor Nelson.
02:40APPLAUSE
02:43We welcome back our new champion, James Janes,
02:46and we start with an apology, a heartfelt apology.
02:51I have annoyed Mummy Janes, Paula Janes.
02:55I am sorry she has been in contact under no circumstances.
02:59I might have called James Janes Jimmy Janes.
03:02She is not happy, and I believe this is from birth, right?
03:05Yeah.
03:06She told the actual midwife.
03:08Yeah, the midwife delivered me and called me Jimmy
03:10and she gave a short shrift.
03:13So you're forgiven, Colin, but thanks.
03:16I think, James, you might be around long enough for me to make amends
03:19if your first appearance is anything to go by.
03:21Mark Brooks is hoping to end it at just one win
03:24from South Moulton and Devon. Lovely to have you here.
03:27Thank you very much.
03:28Yeah, it was a bit of a long travel and I'm a bit nervous,
03:30but hopefully I'll do my best.
03:31If you weren't nervous, it wouldn't be normal.
03:33That is true.
03:34Forget cartoons from your childhood.
03:36You love Top Trumps, which is, you know, the card game
03:39where it'll rate dinosaurs.
03:41Battleships was the first one that I managed to have.
03:44But I still play them now.
03:45I've got seven or eight packets in the drawer.
03:47Tell me about your collection.
03:49To be honest, it started off with my nan and grandad.
03:53They used to buy me packs and then there would be,
03:56say, you collect the three barcodes, you get a free one,
03:58and I'm probably up to about 100 packs at the moment.
04:01Wow. Wow.
04:02You see, I would be happy to sit and play all 100 in a row.
04:05Well, listen, the only competitor you need to worry about today
04:08is James Jeans.
04:10Good luck to James and Mark. Let's do it.
04:12APPLAUSE
04:14Right, our top trump for the time being. Let's go.

08:22He might need to be moved.
08:26Right, let's get the first tea time teaser.
08:28The mind boggles at this one.

12:38MUSIC PLAYS
12:53MUSIC CONTINUES
13:07It's just the way it falls sometimes. 156, Mark?
13:10Yeah.
13:11James?
13:12Yep.
13:13Off you go, Mark.
13:14Ten by five is 50.
13:1550.
13:1650 plus 100 is 150, plus the four and the two.
13:19No need to waste the ink.
13:20Yeah, no need to at all. James?
13:22I did four times two times seven for 56 and added it to the 100.
13:26There you go.
13:27Simple.
13:3138 points each as we chat with Trevor Nelson
13:36and we've had the early days, we've had the MTV days,
13:39the Radio 1 days.
13:41You've met and interviewed,
13:43not met them as in some sort of autograph hunter.
13:46You've interviewed the great and the good,
13:48really have, all the big stars.
13:50Let me ask you this today.
13:52Who are the ones that have got away,
13:54who you wish you had been able to get time with and never did?
13:57Dr Dre.
13:59Yeah.
14:00As a producer, I think of his generation in terms of hip-hop,
14:03definitely the biggest and greatest.
14:06He just never came over here and I never had the opportunity...
14:09I mean, I did Eminem, I remember, at the start of his career.
14:12While I was interviewing Eminem, all I was saying was,
14:15I didn't think Eminem was going to stick around as long as he did,
14:18to be fair, but I had a chance to interview Prince, you know,
14:22and at the time, when they offered me the interview,
14:26he called himself Cymbal and he hated the music industry
14:31and so I would have been interviewing a guy who was very quiet,
14:34not answering any questions, with a mask on,
14:37and I thought, I don't want any part of that.
14:39I think he's an amazing, still the best live performer
14:42I've ever witnessed in my life, but I thought,
14:45do I want to remember this guy for a dead interview?
14:49And sometimes you don't want to meet your heroes, right?
14:51Yeah.
14:52And I'd say the only other person...
14:54I'd never had an opportunity to interview,
14:56but it's the first record I ever got was Michael Jackson.
15:00I had the opportunity to meet him, but, again, I didn't want to meet him.
15:05Yeah.
15:06You know, I just think the music was the great escape when he was a kid.
15:10It was incredible.
15:12But everybody else has been...
15:15People say to me all the time,
15:17oh, it must be great you having interviewed all these people.
15:20Not really, Colin.
15:22Sometimes I don't look forward to them, because of that entourage thing,
15:26because of that, you know, what comes with it,
15:28and the expectation of what you're expected to get out of them,
15:31which is a lot of pressure.
15:33Well, let me ask you then, who's exceeded your expectations?
15:37The most giving person always was Will Smith.
15:39Yes.
15:40He was always the most giving.
15:42Even if he's promoting a dodgy film that's not very good,
15:45he still gives you an incredible 10, 15 minutes.
15:48Thank you very much, Trevor Nelson.
15:5338 points each.
15:55Champ, here we go.
15:57Thanks, Colin. Rachel, can I start with a consonant, please?
16:00Thank you, James. W.
16:02And another?
16:04T.
16:05And a third?
16:06R.
16:07And a fourth?
16:09G.
16:10And a vowel?
16:12E.
16:13And a second?
16:14U.
16:15And a third?
16:17O.
16:18And a consonant?
16:21S.
16:23And a final consonant?
16:25And a final D.
16:26Start the clock.
16:37CLOCK TICKS
16:57James?
16:58Seven.
16:59And Mark?
17:00Seven.
17:01The Highstander continues. What have you got?
17:03Outgrew.
17:04Mr Briggs?
17:05We had grited and outgrew to Dictionary Corner.
17:08Yeah, we had outgrew as well for seven.
17:11And this one for seven, worsted.
17:15Can't be a word. Yeah, worsted, innit?
17:17It's worsted. Worsted, you get me. Worsted, bro.
17:21Yeah. Tell me that's not the dictionary.
17:23It is, but it's not what you think.
17:25It's a toponym.
17:26So it's the name of a smooth yarn,
17:29a fabric that is so named because it's made in Worsted,
17:33the name of a parish in Norfolk.
17:35Very nice. Better meaning than how it's...
17:37It's not what we wanted, though, is it, Colin?
17:39No, I wanted it just to mean exactly as you used it.
17:41Mark, more letters.
17:43Can I have a consonant, please, Rachel?
17:45Thank you, Mark. T.
17:47And another?
17:48L.
17:49And a third?

17:53And can I have a vowel, please?
17:55E.
17:56And another?

17:59And a consonant?
18:01R.
18:02And another?
18:04G.
18:06And another?

19:04Two large, four small this time.
19:07See if this can separate you two.
19:09The four little ones, nine, five, one and three.
19:14And the two large ones, 150.
19:17And the all-important target, 846.

20:00100 minus 5 minus 1, 94 times 9 is 846.
20:04How do you go about it, Mark?
20:06100 by 9 is 900.
20:08Yep.
20:09900 less 50 is 850.
20:11Then minus the 3 and the 1.
20:13Yep, very straightforward.
20:15APPLAUSE
20:17Neck and neck, 62 points each.
20:19Your second tea time teaser is Suspender.
20:22Suspender, his shirt had an iron deficiency.
20:25His shirt had an iron deficiency.
20:28APPLAUSE
20:43Welcome back to Countdown this afternoon.
20:45His shirt had an iron deficiency.
20:47Unpressed, it was.
20:49Unpressed.
20:50We're very impressed by the performance
20:52of both our champion and challenger today.
20:54Mammoth scores with six rounds left.
20:56You could both break 100 here, which is always special.
20:59That's not temp fate, though.
21:01Six rounds left. Mark, you're up.
21:03Can I have a consonant, please, Rachel?
21:05Thank you, Mark. B.

21:55MUSIC PLAYS
22:05Mark?
22:06Eight.
22:07And James?
22:08Seven.
22:09The seven is?
22:10Ironiser.
22:11And the eight, Mark Brooks?
22:13Sobering.
22:14A sobering thought for our champion, James Jeans.
22:17Brilliant work.
22:18APPLAUSE
22:22Very good.
22:24Sobering was eight. We had regions for seven or ignores for seven.
22:28Very good. Lovely. Let's move on. James, it's your letters.

23:23MUSIC STOPS
23:33James?
23:34Stick with a six.
23:36And Mark?
23:37Seven.
23:38The six is?
23:39Poises.
23:40Poises. You're going to kick yourself. Mark?
23:42Foxiest.
23:43Foxiest. Dictionary corner.
23:45OK, there is actually a nine.
23:47Postfixes.
23:49Is that very modern? Is that a media word?
23:52Yeah, it sounds like you might say,
23:54we'll fix it in the edit type thing.
23:56In linguistics, you postfix something by adding a suffix to it,
23:59as in for and some.
24:01So, awesome is postfixing.
24:03So, it's a bit complicated, but it will at least give us a nine.
24:06Well, we can't add anything to that. Brilliant.
24:10Here in the game, though, it takes Mark out
24:12of that crucial Countdown Conundrum territory,
24:15but four rounds left.
24:17You know only too well, James, it can change in the last four rounds.
24:21What are the origins of words?
24:23Susie, Dent, what have we got?
24:26We have got an example of how...
24:28I've been doing this for such a long time,
24:30but I can still be really surprised by something and think,
24:33wow, I never, ever knew this.
24:35And bear with me, because it involves something
24:38that is really not exciting when I say it.
24:41Back formation.
24:43OK, so back formation happens all the time in English.
24:46So, anyone driving a white van these days
24:49might not know that they took their name from a caravan.
24:52Not the caravans that we see on our modern roads,
24:54but the ones that would once travel across the desert.
24:57It's all to do with the means of transport.
24:59If we televised something, obviously we brought that back from television.
25:03PG Woodhouse gave us gruntles,
25:05to be pleased about something rather than disgruntled.
25:08So, this is something we do all the time,
25:10but sometimes it will surprise you
25:12because it will work in a way counter to your expectations.
25:15Orator came before orate, for example,
25:19or editor came before edit.
25:21You would have thought it would be edit,
25:23and then someone who does the edits would be editor,
25:25so it works that way. Swindler gave us swindle.
25:28So, the directions are quite interesting,
25:30but this one I never, ever knew.
25:32So, it involves the word escalator.
25:35OK, so the first escalators appeared in the late 1800s.
25:39We didn't really have names for them
25:42rather than quite sort of complicated ones like revolving stairs
25:45or endless conveyor and that kind of thing.
25:49But you would have thought, of course, that an escalator was so named
25:52because it escalates, it goes up,
25:54but you know it, you have already guessed.
25:58So, turn of the century, the New York's Otis Elevator Company
26:01patented the very first escalators.
26:04It was an entirely new brand name
26:06and their design won first prize at the Paris Exhibition in 1900.
26:11And they became more and more common
26:13because, of course, they're sort of highly useful.
26:15And so, what do we do when we get on an escalator?
26:18We escalate.
26:20And that came after the escalator.
26:23So, it might make you think,
26:25well, why did they name it an escalator in the first place?
26:28They actually took that from a French word, escalade,
26:30which means to climb a wall.
26:32So, they took it from something that was kind of
26:34much, much further back in time when it comes to language.
26:37But I love the fact when we say, well, that escalated quickly, etc.
26:40You would have thought that came first.
26:42But, no, it was the escalator patented all those decades ago.
26:46All from a brand name. Yeah.
26:48Look what came from it. Brilliant. Thank you, Sue Reid.
26:50You're welcome.
26:52The list did escalate quickly, didn't it?
26:55James, really good champion, really strong first win.
26:58He's up against it now. Mark's on 77.
27:01James is on 62.
27:03Perfectly good scores. Let's see what happens. Mark.
27:06Could I have a consonant, please, Rachel?
27:08Thank you, Mark. C.
27:10And another.
27:12P. And another.
27:14H.
27:16And a vowel. U.

28:08There you have it. Mark?
28:10Five. And James?
28:12Five. What have you got, Mark?
28:14Pouch. Pouch.
28:16And James? Vogue.
28:18Yeah, Vogue, Pouch. Horrible letters.
28:21Let's see what the brains department says.
28:24Five all round, actually.
28:26Vouch.
28:28We did pouch.
28:30And cough. Yeah.
28:32Yes. Chive.
28:34I think you might be able to put IE at the end of some of those.
28:37Pouchy, vouchy, but you can't.
28:39Nothing at all. You can if you want to.
28:41Well, if it's thrown in English, you could, but...
28:43Pogue. My goodness, so many fives.
28:45Nothing above that. Nothing above that.
28:47OK, let's see what this final letters round brings.
28:50James, you're choosing how many consonants and how many vowels.
28:53We'll start with a consonant, please.
28:55Thank you, James. T.
28:57And another.
28:59L. And a third.
29:01S. And a fourth.
29:04N. And a vowel.
29:07I. And another.
29:09E. And another.
29:11A.
29:13And a consonant.
29:15T.
29:17And end with a final consonant, please.
29:21And to finish, D.
29:23Last letters.

29:55James?
29:57Just seven. And Mark? Seven.
29:59A seven. What have you got? Slanted.
30:01Slanted. And Mark?
30:03There you go. Good standard.
30:05Well done to both of you. Seven points each.
30:07Not over yet. Dictionary corner, anything else?
30:09We've got one better. Mm-hm.
30:11Instated. Instated.
30:13Yes, you reinstate somebody,
30:15but to instate them someone in the first place is to install them.
30:18Is to put them in. To instate them.
30:20We could be installing a new champion.
30:23But, but, still hope, James,
30:26if you can do better in this numbers round, Mark, you're choosing them.
30:29Can I have six more, please?
30:31You can indeed. You want to seal the deal with a tricky one, potentially.
30:35Six little numbers to finish the day. James needs this.
30:38Right, we have ten, nine, one, four, five and seven.
30:44Is it possible in the first instance?
30:46928.
30:48928 last numbers.

31:29No, I lost it. Lost it.
31:31OK, Mark, what I get this would be, let's see.
31:34I think I've gone wrong.
31:36OK, so both of you have drawn a blank. Mark, you can smile,
31:39cos that means you're a new champion.
31:41But, Rachel, I mean, this is a bit of a pipe dream, surely.
31:45You're going to have to leave it with me.
31:47I'll leave it to you to Wednesday week.
31:49No, give me two minutes.
31:51We'll see what we can do.
31:53One final round to go.

31:58as we reveal today's Countdown Conundrum.
32:04BUZZER
32:05Come on, James.
32:06I thought it was dangerly, but it's not.
32:08It's not, so the rest of the time goes to Mark.

33:02You get the teapot all worked out well, eh?
33:04Perfect, yeah. What's more to want?
33:07And, Mark, you were so, so nervous before those titles rolled,
33:11you know, so I know that was a big deal today.
33:14So I think your scores are just going to go up and up, by the way.
33:17Thank you so much. Well done. Mark's our new champion.
33:20APPLAUSE
33:22I suppose we'll have you back again tomorrow, Trevor.
33:25We'll see you then. All right, Suze?
33:27Yep, see you then.
33:28Oh, well, listen, that is the look of euphoria.
33:31With even time to get the conundrum as well.
33:33I'm going, I'm happy today, Colin.
33:35If you say seven times ten is 70,
33:39add one for 71,
33:41four plus nine is 13,
33:44times those together for 923,
33:47and you have five left over, 98.
