00:30Hello, everybody. Welcome to Countdown this Tuesday afternoon. It's just gone ten past two, or maybe it's just after seven in the morning you're getting ready for work, or maybe you've just slipped into bed, or maybe it's a day off, a Sunday, and you're binge-watching Countdown.
00:46Rachel Riley, it's just a fact we see the numbers, the amount of people that watch Countdown when they want, when they like to watch it on all four. Those numbers are growing as well as the traditional audience that we have now. Fact of life, it's how people watch TV now.
01:01Yeah, and I think I met Nicky Butt many years ago, and he was one of the early morning birds. I don't know if I've ever seen it early in the morning, because I'm not an early morning person, but I do hear that it's on every day.
01:11Here is a question I want an honest answer to. Do you ever catch up on Countdown, watch yourself on the programme?
01:18Sometimes with the sound off, because like, you know, like a lot of viewers will understand, the sound of my voice is terrible.
01:24Well, listen, we love it. We don't care how you watch as long as you're watching, so thank you very much for being here, and cast your eyes now on the Dictionary Corner, whether you're watching Old School or you're catching up on all four.
01:35Yes, and who wouldn't want to wake up or spend the afternoon with our guardian of the dictionary, Susie Dent, and back again, the very funny and always bingeable, Ardlow Hanlon.
01:45APPLAUSE
01:46Great stuff. Well, listen, I know that Rachel Copley, our champion, broke the 100 barrier yesterday in a great game, and I know you better be watching yourself back, because you are some pop.
01:58Going for your third win today. How are you today?
02:00Still quite nervous.
02:02Yeah? Yeah.
02:02I don't want to see you when you're not nervous. Goodness knows what your score will be.
02:06Good luck today. You're up against Sandy MacDonald, who's, you know, from Poole and Dorset, but originally from the Highlands, right?
02:12I am.
02:12Yeah. Listen, I hope you don't mind me saying this.
02:14But I just am blown away by this, because field hockey, I've always pointed out, is such an underrated sport.
02:20It is so, so tough. It is, gladiators play that game.
02:25And you're 72 and you're playing field hockey. Tell me about that.
02:28Um, it's a bit like a habit, really. I've been doing it for about 50-something years, and it's just something that I haven't stopped doing or figured out how to stop.
02:38My body sometimes says no, but the rest of me just keeps going.
02:42I'm in awe of that, Sandy, at any age, but it's 72. Still smashing it. It's brilliant. Thank you, Sandy. And, Rachel, good luck.
02:49APPLAUSE
02:50What did we used to call it? Bully off?
02:54Bully off, yes. Long gone.
02:56Bully off. All right, let's bully off then, Rich.
02:58OK, good afternoon, Rachel.
02:59Afternoon, Rachel.

04:11What are you going to try?
04:12Vrooms.
04:13Vrooms.
04:13Va-va-vroom.
04:14Vrooms.
04:15Vrooms would definitely be there, but not voom, unfortunately.
04:21Va-va-voom, obviously, is there all in one.
04:23But, yeah, sorry about that, Sandy.
04:25Was there anything beyond that?
04:27Well, I had gizmo with an S.
04:31I'm not sure if it's spelled with an S, though.
04:33Yeah.
04:34You can spell it with an S, usually with a Z.
04:36It always makes me think of the gremlins.
04:38Yeah.
04:38But you can spell it with an S as well.
04:40So, gizmos, plural, those gadgets, excellent.
04:43You keep forgetting to put the S in the end.
04:45I don't like plural.
04:47I'm a purist.
04:48I don't pluralise all kinds of.
04:50I don't even want the points.
04:51I just won't cheat for myself.
04:53Gizmos is brilliant for six in that round.

06:23Is that all we have?
06:24Yes.
06:25Adrenal, adrenal glands.
06:27Ardell's there.
06:28Well, it's all there.
06:30Yeah.
06:31With a small a.
06:32Let's get our first numbers, Rich.
06:34We'll stick to the same format, please.

07:47Yep, two below.
07:49OK, how'd you go, Sandy?
07:50I did it the same way.
07:567.8, there's a lot of excitement coming from O'Hanlon's seat.
08:01I can't possibly be right.
08:03I have never got this right in my life.
08:05I'm so sorry for jumping in, Rachel.
08:06No, go for it, come on.
08:07I just have to try this.
08:08This is your moment.
08:09OK, eight plus one is nine, I think.
08:11I think you've got it.
08:13Nine by 100 is 900.
08:16Yes.
08:16Three plus four is seven by six is 42.
08:19And take that away.
08:20Perfect!
08:20Yeah.
08:21Oh, my God!
08:21This is really a hip-started moment for me.
08:25You have no idea how happy I am.
08:26Yes.
08:27So happy.
08:29On that note, let me take you from that to sex fruit.
08:33That's the first Tea Time teaser.
08:34Sex fruit.
08:35Without them, there are no games to play.
08:37Without them, there are no games to play.
08:39There is one game to play here.
09:03Good to see Sandy on the board.
09:06Rachel's got an early lead.
09:07But a long way to go, Sandy.
09:08Let's get more letters.
09:10Consonant, please, Rachel.
09:11Thank you, Sandy.
09:12W.
09:14Another consonant.
09:15N.
09:17And a third.
09:19R.
09:19And another one, please.

10:17And Rachel?
10:17A six.
10:18And a six.
10:18What have we got, Sandy?
10:19Winter.
10:20And what about you, Rachel?
10:21Winsor.
10:22A winsor in the winter.
10:24Yep, you can be a winsor.
10:26Good.
10:27The mind boggles.
10:28Do you have more than a six?
10:29We do, actually.
10:30We've got a seven and an eight.
10:32There's citrine for seven, which is a lemon colour, as you might expect.
10:38And we've also got neuritic.
10:41Not neurotic, but neuritic.
10:42And neuritis is inflammation of the nerves, so if you are neuritic, you are suffering from
10:47that, unfortunately.
10:48OK.
10:49Six points eight in that round, so let's soldier on.
10:52And Rachel, picking again.
10:54OK, consonant, please, Rachel.
10:55Thank you, Rachel.

11:41Bye.
11:42Bye.
11:42Bye.
11:42Bye.

11:47Bye.
11:47Bye.
11:48Bye.
11:49Bye.
11:49Bye.

11:50Bye.
11:51Bye.
11:51Bye.
11:52Time's up, Rich?
11:56Seven.
11:57Yeah, and Sandy?
11:57Seven.
11:58Yeah, very good.
11:59What have you got?
11:59Slander.
12:00And Sandy?
12:01I'll change that.
12:01Landers.
12:02And landers.
12:04People who land?
12:05Yep, spacecraft designed to land on the surface of a planet.
12:08Good.
12:08Landers.
12:09Anything better?
12:10Possibly.
12:11Oh, hello.
12:12Yeah.
12:13Erm, adrenals.
12:15Adrenals.
12:16Yes, short for adrenal glands.
12:18Yeah.
12:18The glands that release adrenaline.
12:20Wonderful.
12:20Yes.
12:20Wonderful stuff here on fire today.
12:22Yes, my adrenals are in full flight at the moment.
12:26Let's see if you go back-to-back numbers.
12:28Let's find out.
12:29Second numbers round of the day, Sandy.
12:31Two from the top and four small, please.
12:33Thank you, Sandy.
12:34Two large.
12:36And, if I can hold on to them, four little coming up.
12:39For this round they are nine, six, five, one.
12:44And the large ones, 75 and 100.
12:47And the target, 549.
12:50549, numbers up.
12:52549.

12:56That's one good.
12:575-4-9, Sandy.
13:235-5-1.
13:252-0-8, Rachel.
13:265-4-6.
13:283-0-8.
13:29So, Sandy, can claw back seven points here.
13:31Er, 100 plus 9.
13:33100 plus 9, 109.
13:36Times 5.
13:37Times 5 is 545.
13:39Plus 6.
13:40Plus 6.
13:425-5.
13:43One, you had a spare one to knock off, but that still gets you the points.
13:46Yeah.
13:47Let's have a wee glance over.
13:49Could it happen?
13:51What do you think?
13:53Rachel, let's get back to business.
13:55Lots of dead ends, but if you say 75 times 6 is 450, then you can add the 100 and take
14:03away the 1.
14:04Yes.
14:04That's all right.
14:07Well done, Rachel.
14:08Well, Ardell, you're not a mathematician, so, you know, you still had your moment of glory.
14:12I can tell you love being in Countdown, which is great.
14:15You know, to get you almost quite a big deal for you to come back has been amazing.
14:20Let me ask you the opposite of that, then.
14:22The antithesis.
14:22Like, what are the, we always talk about the great moments, you know, in people's career.
14:26What about the worst?
14:28It's probably the whole press and publicity side of things.
14:31Mm.
14:32Doing interviews.
14:33You know, you're so afraid you're going to put your foot in it or say the wrong thing,
14:36or you're going to read back something you said months ago and think, do I believe that,
14:42or do I agree with that?
14:43And, of course, you don't a lot of the time.
14:45And then a lot of the time you talk to people and they're not really listening or they're
14:47not engaged with what you're saying or they're not interested in the project you're promoting
14:51or anything like that.
14:52And I remember when that happens, I tend to just have a bit of fun.
14:57Yeah.
14:58Because what's the point otherwise?
14:59And I was doing this interview for a TV listings magazine at one point.
15:04And the reporter was asking me, like, what was I doing last?
15:08And I said something, I just made something up.
15:10I just said, oh, I've just done a musical.
15:13In Vegas.
15:14And so she, her ears pricked up and she said, oh, really?
15:17And I went, yeah.
15:18And I just said the first name that came into my head.
15:20I said, and Frank Sinatra was in it.
15:23When he was alive.
15:24You know, this is going back about 20 years.
15:27And she was getting very interested at this point.
15:31And I just ran with it.
15:32And you're just saying whatever comes into your head.
15:34I said, it had an Egyptian theme.
15:37We were playing two parts of a camel.
15:39Like, Frank was the front part, I was the back part of the camel.
15:42And then I went on.
15:43I thought, I'm getting away with this.
15:44It's going very well.
15:45She's listening to every word that I'm saying.
15:47And then I said, myself and Frank became really good friends.
15:51And he used to come and visit me and stay with me in my flat in London.
15:54And we used to play chess together.
15:55So, she printed it word for word.
16:00Wow.
16:01Verbatim.
16:03Kind of interestingly, a little coda.
16:05My agent got lots of calls asking me to be in musicals.
16:10It's a great tactic.
16:11Like, I'm completely in the wrong business.
16:13Yeah.
16:13But it's amazing how gullible people are, generally, you know.
16:17It's a great tip for any young journalists out there,
16:20whether you're going to do podcasts or YouTube channels
16:22or the written word or whatever.
16:24One of the hardest things to do when you're nervous,
16:26I think I was nervous for the first 10 years of interviewing anybody,
16:30is just to listen to the answer rather than look at your next question.
16:33Because the best part of interviews is always what they're saying to you.
16:36It's always good to listen to that.
16:38Well, we're all ears for you this week.
16:39Thank you, Arden.
16:43I can't believe you know Splang Sinatra.
16:45Right, 31 plays 27, and Rach, you're picking.
16:48A consonant, please, Rachel.
16:50Thank you, Rachel.
16:50S.
16:51And another.
16:53L.
16:54A third, please.
16:56D.
16:57And one more.
16:59L.
17:00Now, a vowel, please.
17:02U.
17:03A second.
17:04E.
17:05A third.
17:06U.
17:09A consonant, please.
17:11M.
17:13And a final vowel, please.
17:15And a final E.
17:17And start the clock.

19:13Sandy?
19:16Six.
19:17Rach?
19:18Risky seven.
19:19OK, she likes to take a risk, Sandy, so the six might count.
19:22What is it?
19:22Priest.
19:23Come on, Rach, speak to me.
19:25Positor.
19:26Positor.
19:27Not a bad guess, but I don't think it's going to be in, Rachel.
19:33It's not, unfortunately, not specified as an agent now.
19:37There you go.
19:37Sorry.
19:38Was there anything above a six, Ardell?
19:40I only managed a six myself.
19:42Towers.
19:44Yeah.
19:44There's a nice seven there, a riposte.
19:46Yeah, and ropiest.
19:48A ropiest.
19:48I prefer riposte.
19:49I prefer ropiest well, so there you go.
19:52OK.
19:54Back to four points.
19:55Let's switch back to the numbers.
19:57Rich?
19:58One from the top, please, and five from anywhere else.
20:00One from the top in an attempt to grow your lead.
20:03Let's see if it works.
20:04The five small ones, four, two, eight, six, and one,
20:10and the large one, 25.
20:11And this target, oh, one, two, five.
20:16Put the ten points in the bag.
20:18Be grateful for them.

20:48Then let's go through it, cos we have two, Rich.
20:52One, two, five. Yeah, Sandy? One, two, five.
20:54Right, let's do as quick as we can, Rich.
20:56Six minus one is five. Yeah.
20:58Times 25. And Sandy?
21:00Four plus one is five, times 25.
21:02That's incorrect. I'm sorry, I can't give you the points. No, well done.
21:05Ten points each.
21:08Second tea time teaser, it's Anne boast.
21:11Anne boast. Anne would boast of her poor behaviour.
21:15Anne would boast of her poor behaviour.
21:18Nice to have you back. Anne would boast of her poor behaviour.
21:37Anne boast becomes abstinent, which I'm assuming just means poor behaviour,
21:41but haven't really heard the word. Yeah, it's an adjective.
21:43It's a really old one. It means discordant or really unreasonable.
21:46Right. Well, we have none of that in this studio of an afternoon,
21:49but we do have a real competitive streak.
21:51Four points in it. Six rounds left. Sandy, let's go.
21:55Consonant, please, Rachel. Thank you, Sandy. T.
21:58Another consonant. J. And again. R. And again. M.
22:07A vowel. E. And another vowel. O. A third. A. And a consonant. Y. And a vowel, please.
22:23What? A final E. And let's play.
22:26C.
22:28.
22:56Time's up, Sandy. Five. And, Rach? Six. And a six, OK.
23:00What have you got, Sandy? Meteor. And, Rach? Meteor. A meteor, look at that.
23:06You were kicking yourself, Sandy. The dictionary corner.
23:09A few sixes flying about, but anything more? No, that was ours.
23:13Meteor. Badly spelt majority.
23:16LAUGHTER
23:18Ten points in it. Rach, more letters.
23:20OK, consonant, please, Rachel. Thank you. R.
23:24And a second. G.
23:27A third, please. N. And one more. F.
23:32A vowel, please. A.
23:34And a second. E.
23:36And a third. O.
23:40And a consonant. N.
23:43And a final vowel, please. A final A.
23:47And good luck.
23:481 1 1 1
23:50.
24:18Rich.
24:19Six. Sandy. Six. There you go. It'll be honours even. What are the words?
24:23Fanna. Sandy, what's your word? Fanna.
24:27Yep. Dexter, you can. A few sixes. I've got forage.
24:31Forage for orange. Yeah. Forage for orange. Nice.
24:36Yeah, just more sixes. Angora and Gawana, which is a monitor lizard in Australian English.
24:41Upshot of all that, then, is still a ten-point gap with four rounds left.
24:45Susie, you were saying origins and words all this week from viewer emails.
24:49Yes, and this one, actually, I have to say, it was a nice bit of serendipity
24:54because I had an email from Patricia Cook who asked me about the word onion
24:59and where that comes from, because it's just quite a strange-sounding word.
25:03And also, I've been inspired by a lovely book by Richard Lederer
25:07called The Complete Pleasury of Word and Phrase Origins.
25:10And so the two came together nicely, because I've been reading that.
25:13And it's all about numbers. That's a kind of tribute to Rachel as well
25:17and how they sort of sit sometimes invisibly in our language.
25:20And that's the case with onion that Patricia is asking about
25:22because, actually, it should be a one-ion. It's got the number one in it.
25:26It goes back to the Latin unus, meaning one, because an onion is a single bulb.
25:30And one occurs in lots of other ways as well.
25:34So if you talk about being lonely, you might not think that it actually began as all one.
25:40You were on your own. And all one became alone.
25:43It was made into one word.
25:45And eventually the A dropped off and we get lonely instead, which is quite nice.
25:50We get unity as well from that Latin unus.
25:53Number two, that occurs in lots of different places, but in lots of different forms as well.
25:58So we have twi, tween, twixt, twix, bi and twi.
26:04All of those mean two.
26:05So that means you get a biscuit from the French biscuit, meaning twice cooked,
26:08because they were slow cooked and then slow cooked to harden them up.
26:12You have combine. You've got the bi there.
26:14You have twi light, which is that lovely period between two lights.
26:20It's between daylight and then the emerging light of the stars, which I love.
26:25So you'll find that everywhere.
26:26And then three will crop up in the tri that is in trivia.
26:31And a trivia, a lot of people think this goes back to ancient Roman rose,
26:36which would sometimes have crossroads where three rose would meet
26:38and people would gather at this meeting point,
26:41much like they would today gather, by the water cooler and they would swap gossip.
26:45But actually it was really cemented in English by the trivium.
26:48And in medieval times this was a form of education
26:51seen as the three roads to knowledge,
26:53and that was grammar, rhetoric and logic.
26:56And I will go on.
26:57I'll carry on with numbers maybe in the next day or two,
27:01because they occur everywhere.
27:03But I love the fact that an onion is really a one-ion.
27:06It's brilliant.
27:07They're the ones that stick in my head.
27:12A really simple word that I use all the time.
27:14Never thought about it.
27:15It will always be a one-ion to me from now on.
27:18So it doesn't matter what the word is.
27:20If you'd like to send an email over to Susie,
27:22the email is countdown at channel4.com.
27:25Countdown at channel4.com.
27:27And luckily enough for you, that is exactly the same email address
27:30if you'd like to apply to be on Countdown.

30:23You can get to an eight with truanted.
30:26There is a verb.
30:27Right, 73 plays 49, so the win is in the bag.
30:31Rage is third, but let's enjoy the last two rounds.
30:34Sandy, your numbers.
30:36One large and five small, please, Rachel.
30:38Thank you, Sandy.
30:39One from the top, five not.
30:40And the final numbers of the day are ten, six, four, four, three,
30:48and the large one, 25.

31:30Nope, lost it.
31:31No worries. And Rach?
31:32Lost it.
31:33Lost it as well.
31:35I think this is going to be a challenge for even the great Rachel Riley.
31:39It's got lots of factors, and one of them, if you say 25 minus the two fours,
31:44you get 17, and then 10 plus 6 is 16, times by 3 is...
31:53Am I getting this right?
31:55Four... Yeah, 48, and times them together.
31:58Oh, my goodness me.
32:008-1-6.
32:04OK. 73, 49, 10 more points up for grabs.

32:58possibilities, the ING was there
33:00I've hit a dead end
33:02Ardell O'Hanlon looks like he just wants to go home
33:04so I'm not even going to ask him
33:06the big test is, if Rachel Riley
33:08didn't get it, then already anyone in Britain
33:10got it, no?
33:12I don't know
33:13right, let's take a look
33:16unrooting
33:17farce, it's a farce
33:20unrooting
33:22I know you think it's uprooting, not unrooting

34:04you going to watch this one back, Rach?
34:06on silent like usual
34:08you know what, the worst thing about watching Countdown back
34:11is when you watch it back
34:12and you're still not as good as the champion
34:14even though you know all the answers
34:16the worst thing is when I miss a numbers game here
