Rain and a few thunderstorms across southwest England and Wales moving northwards and into Northern Ireland. Yellow warnings are in place for thunderstorms. A few showers developing too for northern England and the West Midlands. The East Midlands, Scotland and southern England largely dry and bright, with conditions turning drier across southwest England. Blustery conditions with some of the showers and thunderstorms, and close to the North Sea where it may bring in some haar. Warm for most but cooler near North Sea coasts - This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the afternoon of 12/06/2025. Bringing you today’s weather forecast is Alex Deakin.

00:00Welcome to your latest update from the Met Office. Hot for some, downpours for others.
00:05Plenty going on with the weather today and indeed into the weekend.
00:09Here's the bigger picture, the view from space.
00:11The thickest cloud is across the western half of the UK, closest to an area of low pressure.
00:17And the winds go anti-clockwise around low pressure, so we're wafting up air from the south.
00:23Hence why it's warm and hence why it's humid.
00:25And that's why we've also got these thundery showers that we've seen drifting up from the south.
00:30It's been a very wet start for parts of southwest England and Wales.
00:33More rain to come here and the rain getting heavier across Northern Ireland, which could cause some problems.
00:38So we have Met Office yellow warnings in place.
00:41Heavy rain will continue to drift its way northwards, losing some of the thunderstorms.
00:47But still the potential for one or two, particularly in Wales later on.
00:50We'll see a few showers developing over northern England, perhaps parts of the West Midlands.
00:55Much of eastern England, a good chunk of southern England as the south-west turns drier.
01:00And most of Scotland actually having a fine day out there with some good spots of sunshine.
01:04There's quite a gusty wind blowing, particularly close to the heavier downpours.
01:08But also coming in from the North Sea, quite blustery conditions here,
01:12bringing a little bit of ha at times around the coasts of the far north-east.
01:16And certainly bringing a cooler feel on some of those coasts.
01:19But for many, it's really quite warm.
01:20It's really quite humid.
01:21Even if you've got the cloud and the rain in the West, it is quite sticky.
01:25But temperatures with some sunshine across the south-eastern corner of the UK getting into the mid-twenties,
01:32perhaps a little higher in one or two places.
01:34Now, the rain will continue to push northwards through this evening.
01:36Still some heavy downpours.
01:37Parts of North Wales, north-west England, south-west Scotland seeing some heavy rain for a time this evening.
01:43But it all does tend to melt away, staying a bit wet across the far north-west of Scotland into the dawn period.
01:49One or two scattered showers further west.
01:51But many places actually having a dry night.
01:54And many central and eastern parts will be largely clear.
01:57Those brisk winds in the east will start to ease down.
02:00And what won't ease down are the temperatures.
02:01These are the numbers through the night.
02:03Urban areas staying in the mid-teens.
02:05So quite a warm, quite a humid night.
02:07A tricky night for sleeping, perhaps.
02:09Now, many places will have a fine start to Friday.
02:12Quite a bit of clouds in the west, but generally dry.
02:15Certainly a drier morning for Wales and south-west England compared to today.
02:19A few heavy showers likely to break out across northern Ireland.
02:22We'll need to watch those.
02:23They could turn into thunderstorms.
02:25And then all eyes down to the south as we start to see another round of storms drifting up from France.
02:32Perhaps getting into the south-west of England by the end of the afternoon.
02:37And certainly spreading quite a bit of cloud ahead of them.
02:39But certainly much of northern England, eastern England having a fine day.
02:43And in the east, peak of the temperature is likely to be in this spell.
02:47Well, 27, 28, perhaps 29 degrees Celsius.
02:50A small chance we could get to 30.
02:52Many other areas further west with more cloud.
02:54Not as hot.
02:55But probably feeling quite a bit warmer on some of these north sea coasts.
02:57Because the winds will be lighter and have switched directions.
03:00So a warmer, more humid feel here.
03:03That heat and humidity will then trigger further thunderstorms spreading up from the south.
03:07So again, an area, or a few areas we need to watch.
03:11Clutch of storms, perhaps for East Anglia and the south-east of England.
03:15And some further heavy rain for Wales and south-west England.
03:17Coupled with today's rain, that could cause some further disruption.
03:20Potential for flooding.
03:21A lot of rain falling in a short space of time.
03:24And with the thunderstorms, lightning, an extra hazard as well as the potential for hail.
03:29And all that wet weather continues to move northwards during Friday night.
03:32So you may get woken up by the rain or even a crack of thunder or a flash of lightning.
03:38So warnings in place also for Friday night and into Saturday.
03:42From the area of low pressure that's pretty much sitting over us by then.
03:46So some heavy rain around on Saturday.
03:48But low pressure does tend to drift away.
03:51Although there'll be a few showers on Sunday, it does look drier.
03:54And notably, cooler air is wafting in from the Atlantic by this stage.
03:58So we'll lose that humidity too.
04:00Onour will have a full weekend forecast on our YouTube channel by Thursday afternoon.
04:06So check that out for more details of the weekend.
