Persistent rain across the north of Scotland today, with a glum feel in Northern Ireland and southern Scotland. Rain showers in the south, with some thundery downpours likely in the southwest of England this afternoon. Some sunny spells across England and Wales amidst the showers, with a mild, humid feel. There is a yellow thunderstorm warning for southwest England and Wales  - This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the afternoon of 07/10/24. 00:00A bit of sunshine, lots of showers and a few thunderstorms, it's a lively start to a pretty

00:06active week of weather. The bigger picture from space shows a swirl of clouds heading

00:12out to the west and further out west this is Hurricane Kirk, soon to be an ex-hurricane

00:19but still likely to pack a punch. The most likely track of this storm system is now to

00:25the south of the UK and across France, more on that in a moment. But let's deal with this

00:29low pressure first of all because this will dominate our weather for the next couple of

00:33days, sitting out west and just throwing showers up across the UK. Well, persistent rain across

00:37northern Scotland, dull and damp one across Aberdeenshire, Caithness and Sutherland and

00:42Orkney today but further south we should see some sunny spells for Northern Ireland, central

00:46parts of Scotland. Southern Scotland may stay fairly glum and further south for England

00:51and Wales be prepared for showers, some heavy showers moving through fairly smartly but

00:56some big downpours are possible but equally we will see some sunshine too. The sunshine

01:01tending to disappear in the far south west as we see some heavier bursts of rain coming

01:05into Cornwall later on. Temperature wise, well when the sun's out it's really unpleasant

01:10enough for the time of year, 16, 17, maybe 18 or 19 in one or two spots but feeling cooler

01:15when the showers come along and a fairly brisk gusty wind blowing around the coast of Wales

01:20and south west England. And then we see this heavier rain working its way northwards from

01:25Cornwall into Devon then into south Wales for the evening rush hour and spreading some

01:29heavy thundery showers further east as well. We do have a Met Office yellow thunderstorm

01:34warning in place, some heavy downpours likely, hail and lightning also likely to potentially

01:40cause some disruptions. So, do watch out for those thundery showers across the south and

01:46the west overnight. As we go through the evening, the showers further north should tend to fade.

01:50We'll have a zone of cloudier weather drifting north across Scotland and always across the

01:54far north, staying cloudy. Notice here the wind's coming down from the north so on the

01:59cool side here but elsewhere the wind's generally coming up from the south. So, quite a mild

02:03night with all the cloud with some clearer skies in southern Scotland. We may dip down

02:07into single figures. Still showers around though for Tuesday and again still some of

02:12them packing a punch, some heavy thundery showers. You can see the low pressure sitting

02:17out here just throwing those showers up across south Wales, southern England. Thicker cloud

02:21and more persistent rain across the east of Northern Ireland, southeast Scotland, far

02:26northeast of England. That rain could start to build up as we go through Tuesday night

02:30and into Wednesday. And the rain tended to fizzle out a little bit across northern Scotland

02:35but the northerly winds aren't fizzling out. If anything, they're getting a little bit

02:38stronger. So, southwesterly winds in the southwest, northeasterly winds in the northeast. They

02:45will be bringing the cooler air further south and temperatures struggling a little bit across

02:49northern Scotland, 11-12 at best. Further south we could again, when the sun's out between

02:54the showers, get up into the high teens but feeling cooler when the downpours come along.

03:00The northerly winds will eventually win out but we'll see more of these showers as this

03:04low pressure continues to swirl in across the UK during Tuesday evening and probably

03:09still around on Wednesday too. So, this low pressure dominating for the next few days.

03:14We do need to keep our eyes on Kirk. This won't be a hurricane by this stage but it

03:19is still packing a punch. Wet and windy conditions hitting northern Spain, northern Portugal

03:24before the low pressure system then heads its way into France bringing some very gusty

03:29winds for northern Spain, northern Portugal and then into France later in the week before

03:34it turns northwards bringing a lot of heavy rain and gusty winds across northern France

03:38and the low countries and then heading up across Germany. So, likely now to stay to

03:42the south of the UK but one thing Kirk does as it moves away is it allows northerly winds

03:47and the UK to turn quite a lot colder come Thursday and Friday. You can check out our
