00:01Senate President Chief Escudero is not too keen on Senator Francis Tolentino's proposal to expedite Vice President Sara Duterte's impeachment trial.
00:11Tolentino proposed to have the trial in 19 days, from June 11 to June 30, the last day of the 19th Congress.
00:18Under his proposal, the prosecution and defense teams will only have one to two days each to present their evidence.
00:24For this to be possible, Tolentino suggested that the House reduce the number of impeachment articles from 7 to 2.
00:32I think it's very difficult to limit the presentation of evidence on both sides to one day each, simply because you want it done at the soonest possible time.
00:45I don't think the trial should be done at the soonest possible time.
00:50Escudero says the trial length will ultimately be up to the impeachment court, but assures the Senate will convene as one on Wednesday, June 11.
00:58Asked if the impeachment articles can be carried over to the 20th Congress, Escudero says,
01:03Ang paniniwala ko at ang tingin ko, tatawi dito. Pero itong opinion ito, mula sa 19th Congress ay hindi pwedeng i-bind ang 20th Congress. Kailangan pagpasyahan muli yan ng 20th Congress.
01:16Meantime, Sen. Coco Pimentel moves to commence the opening right of the trial with Sen. Rizón Tivera's seconding.
01:22I most respectfully move. Number one, that our legislative business be suspended. Number two, that we already convene as the impeachment court at this very moment.
01:37We had a choice every step of the way. And our choice has been to delay, to drag our feet. Tapos ngayon, if I might add, biglang bibilisan. An impeachment trial of all of three days. What insanity is this?
01:58No.
