In this powerful update, I share a harrowing experience from the resuscitation bay at Gold Coast University Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department, where I was rushed by ambulance after suffering two seizures in quick succession. Filmed at 11 PM on Saturday night 24 May of this year (2025), I’m groggy from anti-seizure medication, lying on a stretcher with nasal cannula oxygen prongs, a blood pressure cuff, a urinary catheter, a pulse oximeter on my finger, and ECG electrodes monitoring my heart due to elevated troponin levels. Despite the fear of a potential ICU stay due to the risk of another seizure, I’m deeply grateful for the incredible first responders—ambulance paramedics and hospital staff—and the comforting presence of my family: my husband Luke, daughter Amity, and toddler son Spencer.

My sodium levels dropped to 121, indicating severe hyponatremia, a serious maternal health condition that can arise from excessive fluid intake or hormonal changes, leading to complications like seizures. New mothers are particularly vulnerable due to the physical demands of postpartum recovery, where fluid and electrolyte imbalances can occur if not carefully managed.

As a passionate advocate for maternal health, I see this experience as a vital opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of monitoring our well-being as mothers. I’m more determined than ever to continue my journey as a mom, now equipped with greater knowledge to manage this health issue and support others in prioritizing their health. Join me in spreading awareness to empower mothers to stay strong and healthy.

00:00Hi. So this is an unexpected thing. I had a seizure at home. Amity, what happened?
00:11You had a seizure. Amity found me on the floor, didn't you?
00:16Yeah, and I went to get down to it.
00:19So apparently I'm drinking too much. I think it's because of the breastfeeding.
00:26I'm in the emergency. I was brought here by ambulance and I might have to go to the ICU for the night.
00:34And they've done a brain scan and they can't find any tumors, but I'm really scared.
00:40Like, so my sodium levels are really low. Like, I drink a lot because I breastfeed.
00:47And it's late. What's the time?
00:49It's like 11.
00:51It's 11 o'clock at night. And I'm really thirsty all the time. And I'm just...
00:59And there's something a bit with my heart as well. Some enzyme or something.
01:05You've got some fluid in your lungs.
01:07I've got some fluid in my lungs and I've never spent the night in an ICU before. I'm scared. I'm...
01:19But the doctor's been really nice. I've got a lovely doctor here looking after me.
01:24And endocrine doctors are going to be looking after me now.
01:29And the good news is my diabetes. I've checked my sugar. It's alright.
01:35So you don't have diabetes?
01:37You always said I didn't have diabetes.
01:39And you don't.
01:41But that was really scary. So I had one seizure and then I had another seizure.
01:49But the staff have been so good. Ambulance staff are so good. Like, they're so good. First responders are so good.
02:00But I woke up really confused. I couldn't believe it. I woke up in my home and there was ambulance people there.
02:08And Luke said I had a seizure. I was really confused. But I can't breastfeed at the moment.
02:17Because you've had medication.
02:19Yeah, I've had medication. But I wish my family could be here. I'm scared. I don't want to be here for myself.
02:29But the doctor thinks I'm going to be okay. And we'll know more. They've ordered a lot of tests.
02:39And I'm on fluid restrictions now. So they're going to restrict me to, like, a litre. A litre a day.
02:49And I've got an oxygen thing and it's really drying on my nose. Like, it's airs.
02:57And I hit my head on the slate. And I also bit my tongue. That's really sore. I've had a little icy pile. Just a little bit of sugar. Energy.
03:09I am. Oh, this is awful. It's scary. Do you want to sit up? I am. The worst thing about it is I can't look after Spencer. Like, I'm really not happy.
03:27You might want to get Spencer. Yeah.
03:33So Luke and Amity are here and obviously Spencer's here. Mummy loves you.
03:39Spencer was really upset when I was taken in the ambulance. He was screaming.
03:45But anyway, so what time is it? Eleven. Eleven. Eleven. Eleven.
03:51So I'm hoping to go back up to the ward. But I might, um, I might be in ICU for the night. Which I've never been in ICU before. But, um, I'll keep, I'll keep doing updates. I, um, I have to say this is something new.
04:13Thanks for being here. Thanks for being here, love. I tell you what, it's such a comfort to have my kids here and Luke here. Like, I'm just scared.
04:23Thinking by myself. And Spencer's really tired. And I'm really tired and I'm cold.
04:29You've got two blankets on him.
04:33Oh, and I've got a catheter in two. Which is really horrible. And I've been really dizzy in my neck. So, um, so I'll, I'll keep doing updates and, um, health. Health is an adventure. But my tongue is really sore.
05:01But, um, I've got this on too. They're monitoring my heart. And I've got, um, they had a blood test too, here.
05:15So, um, I've got a few things. I've got this. I've got this. I've got a catheter.
05:21You've got that.

05:25You've got, like, veins under your body.
05:27Oh yeah, I've got these.
05:29Yeah. And then you've got nose oxygen too.
