00:00:00One last time, I have to see this ground.
00:00:12It's beautiful now, as if nothing had happened here.
00:00:18Soon they will tear down the main house, and then nothing will be left.
00:00:22Nothing.
00:00:24Except what I remember.
00:00:25I grew up in the town nearby, where my father was the mayor, and where this house stood waiting for me.
00:00:36It was built by Wilfred Butler.
00:00:40We had never seen him, and he never lived at home.
00:00:45Until, the day before Christmas, in 1950, he finally did come back, for the last time.
00:00:55All of us believe that his death was an accident.
00:01:18No one knew that another person had come to Butler House that Christmas.
00:01:23As Deputy Coroner of the County of Arlington, State of Massachusetts,
00:01:53I hereby find, upon evidence of an autopsy conducted by the medical examiner of this county,
00:02:00that the deceased, Wilfred Butler, died as a result of burns inflicted accidentally upon himself,
00:02:07on his own premises, during the afternoon of December 24th, 1950.
00:02:12No further inquiry shall be held over the body of the deceased.
00:02:19And this inquest is officially closed.
00:02:21All is calm, all is bright, round yon virgin, mother and child.
00:02:37Thank you, Father.
00:04:19On New Year's Day, they buried Wilford Butler.
00:04:23There was no one there to mourn him.
00:04:26It was the funeral of a stranger.
00:04:28I, Wilford Butler.
00:04:55Being of sound mind and body, at least what the world considers sound,
00:05:03to hereby leave my house and its grounds and all personal effects within that house.
00:05:10To my only surviving relation, my grandson, Geoffrey Butler.
00:05:18And I solemnly charge him with one duty.
00:05:25Let him leave the house as I left it, standing untouched to remind the world of its inhumanity and cruelty.
00:05:42For 20 years, that house lay empty, exactly as Wilford left it.
00:05:50And then, last year, rumors began that it was finally being sold.
00:05:55The newspaper story traveled through the county to a state hospital for the criminally insane.
00:06:03And then, last year, we were dead.
00:06:16Oh, no!
00:06:46The man who came to sell the house had never seen it.
00:07:16He was a lawyer from the city, just doing a job and enjoying it.
00:07:26Stop! And look serious, please.
00:07:31Oh, you're hopeless.
00:07:35Oh, look!
00:07:37Hey, wait, where are you going now? The mayor's gonna have a fit, yeah?
00:07:43One more shot.
00:07:46Come on.
00:07:49Stay there. I won't want to get it.
00:07:52It's mine.
00:07:54For all the news as it happens, stay tuned to WLIX, your voice in the Northeast.
00:08:07This is Roger Fowler with local stories.
00:08:09First, today's headlines.
00:08:11A warehouse fire still rages in Elizabeth.
00:08:14Police suspect arson.
00:08:15That escaped inmate at Margaretville State Hospital still at large, still hunted by state police.
00:08:20And over in Roxbury, the city passes a controversial housing code.
00:08:24I'm at the right time to get it.
00:08:27I'm letting the town know the West.
00:08:28I'm in the right place.
00:08:30I know it was a good comedy city.
00:08:32I know it was a good comedy group, you might have a lot of friends.
00:08:34I know it was public and I know it was a good comedy group, you might have a lot of friends.
00:08:36They had to get it.
00:09:08Well, didn't I tell you?
00:09:33It's beautiful.
00:09:36Can we see the rest of it?
00:09:38Honey, that was it.
00:09:41I think the mayor's waiting for me.
00:09:44My love is such an important man.
00:09:47Right.
00:09:48Laura always says that.
00:09:52Darling.
00:09:52What?
00:09:55Don't be long.
00:09:59Honey, if you get bored, just look at the view.
00:10:02Sooner or later, that fire duck's gonna take us back home.
00:10:05Tony.
00:10:09Hi, can you?
00:10:14So...
00:10:14It's so funny...
00:10:15What's the pleasant right now?
00:10:16I don't think so.
00:10:16I don't think so.
00:10:24They seem to be willing to listen.
00:10:26They're not?
00:10:27Mr. Carter.
00:10:45Mr. Mayor.
00:10:53Let me introduce you.
00:10:56This is Charlie Toman, who publishes our weekly newspaper, The Patriot.
00:11:01Mr. Toman.
00:11:04And this is Tess Howard.
00:11:06How do you do?
00:11:07She operates our switchboard.
00:11:08Oh, really?
00:11:08We call her the communications director.
00:11:13And this is Bill Mason.
00:11:15Mason.
00:11:16Our sheriff.
00:11:21Won't you sit there, Mr. Carter, at the head of the table?
00:11:28I, uh, didn't expect to meet you all together.
00:11:31It's quite a reception.
00:11:33All right, let's begin.
00:11:51As you know, I've been retained by Geoffrey Butler.
00:11:55The matter concerns the house that he inherited from his grandfather, Wilfred Butler.
00:11:59Go on, Mr. Carter.
00:12:05I, uh, I believe that you offered to buy the house for my client.
00:12:12Offered?
00:12:12We begged him.
00:12:14We wrote letters and we...
00:12:15That's enough, Tess.
00:12:16Well, it's true.
00:12:17Trouble.
00:12:19It was always trouble.
00:12:20I can sympathize.
00:12:21I spent the last 20 years and more driving people away from there.
00:12:27Prowlers.
00:12:28Burglars.
00:12:29Kids.
00:12:29They're the worst.
00:12:31Chasing for nothing because of that will.
00:12:35That drivel about humanity.
00:12:37No, no, no.
00:12:39Inhumanity.
00:12:39What the hell is that, huh?
00:12:41Yes, well, he was a bitter man.
00:12:49Hate?
00:12:49It must have been very hard.
00:12:50It must have been hate.
00:12:57That man hated.
00:12:59Well, some people are like that.
00:13:00No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:13:30The question is...
00:14:00Well, do you still want the house?
00:14:03Are you offering it to us, Mr. Carter?
00:14:06Exactly.
00:14:09Why now?
00:14:11Well, that's Mr. Butler's business, isn't it?
00:14:16You know we're not rich.
00:14:19Most of us came here during the Depression.
00:14:23But we love this town.
00:14:25It's our home.
00:14:26And naturally, you want to improve it.
00:14:31Exactly.
00:14:32My client understands that, and he fully sympathizes,
00:14:36and he's willing to sacrifice the house
00:14:38for $50,000
00:14:41in cash
00:14:43by noon tomorrow.
00:14:45That's an awful lot of cash.
00:14:53It's also an awfully good bargain.
00:14:55You could go to Wilton.
00:14:57You could go now, to the bank.
00:15:02Am I clearly understood?
00:15:04You could go to...
00:15:05All that cash.
00:15:10Perfect.
00:15:11I'll wait for your answer until tomorrow.
00:15:14You're spending the night here?
00:15:17Yes.
00:15:18May I ask where?
00:15:20Here at the Butler house.
00:15:23We could put you up at the motel
00:15:25as our guest.
00:15:28No, no.
00:15:28The house is fine.
00:15:30The Paradise Motel.
00:15:32That's very kind of you,
00:15:33but I'm meeting Mr. Butler
00:15:34about some personal items.
00:15:37You'll want a phone.
00:15:38I can reconnect the line.
00:15:40Don't trouble, please.
00:15:42No trouble.
00:15:43You'll need a phone.
00:15:45Don't want to be stuck out there.
00:15:46Well, you've convinced me.
00:15:55By the way,
00:15:56have you known Mr. Butler a long time?
00:15:59No, I've never met him.
00:16:00He called me and asked me
00:16:01if I'd handle this for him.
00:16:02I said yes.
00:16:03He had the key delivered to my office.
00:16:06Mr. Mayor, Sheriff,
00:16:08Mr. Toman,
00:16:10Mr. Howard.
00:16:11See you all tomorrow.
00:16:14In fact, I'm looking forward
00:16:16to it.
00:16:26Slick.
00:16:27Really slick.
00:16:29He's a big lawyer, Bill.
00:16:30You've got to expect that.
00:16:31Don't tell me about lawyers.
00:16:32Oh, you see the way
00:16:33he looked at us?
00:16:34You see his clothes?
00:16:35He's doing his job.
00:16:37Just don't tell me about lawyers.
00:16:39You know what I like to see?
00:16:41Two of them like that
00:16:42when talking to each other.
00:16:43Neither one of them
00:16:44would know what to believe.
00:16:45I love you, too.
00:16:47Honey, when I get home,
00:16:48I'm going to have a nice surprise
00:16:49for you.
00:16:51Oh, no, I can't tell you
00:16:52what it is now.
00:16:53It wouldn't be a surprise,
00:16:54now, would it?
00:16:56No, no, I can't come home now,
00:16:58but it'll be very soon.
00:17:00Very soon.
00:17:02Honey, of course I miss you.
00:17:04Yes, yes, I miss Mommy, too.
00:17:11Laura, how are you, kid?
00:17:18So, I'll call tomorrow.
00:17:21No, I want to call.
00:17:22I want to talk to Jenny.
00:17:25Yeah, well, as a matter of fact,
00:17:27I'm having a fine time.
00:17:29Well, same to you, darling.
00:17:36What do you mean, hostile?
00:17:37I was wondering
00:17:57if we get it,
00:18:01what then?
00:18:02Tap it down.
00:18:09Okay.
00:18:10Okay.
00:18:13I'd better get going.
00:18:15Do me a favor, Tess.
00:18:16Call Diane,
00:18:17tell her I'm going to Wilton,
00:18:18and I'll be back late.
00:18:20I'll be back.
00:18:36Come on.
00:19:06Come on.
00:19:37It's fantastic, isn't it?
00:19:40Yeah.
00:19:42Yeah, Butler wasn't kidding.
00:19:45Nobody's lived here for years.
00:19:47That would be such a waste.
00:19:50It's his grandfather's monument.
00:19:53You know, there's a caretaker who keeps this place just the way he left it.
00:19:58What kind of monument is this?
00:20:00Well, that's the trouble.
00:20:03Nobody remembers anymore.
00:20:06That's what usually happens in America.
00:20:09I remember this.
00:20:10And he walks with me, and he talks with me, and he tells me I'm his own.
00:20:16And he walks with me, and he talks with me, and he tells me I am his own.
00:20:29And the joy we share, and I carry there.
00:20:38You're not serious.
00:20:40You used to hear that at funerals.
00:20:42At funerals?
00:20:43I was a kid in Chipley, Georgia.
00:20:48There's also Chipley, Florida.
00:20:50But they have both been subsequently eradicated from the map.
00:20:54None other has ever known.
00:21:24The only thing opened was the delicatessen, so I brought you pastrami, salami, potato salad, macaroni, everything you like.
00:21:42I'll have bologna.
00:21:44And macaroni.
00:21:46No, no, no, some of that potato salad.
00:21:49Did you pick the wine, too?
00:21:50The delicatessen man took a personal interest in its selection.
00:21:55Oh, well, we got lucky again.
00:21:57That's early 1970.
00:21:58That's hard to come by.
00:22:00Can I have some, too?
00:22:03Of course.
00:22:03Of course, you may.
00:22:08Mmm.
00:22:20It must have been wonderful.
00:22:29What?
00:22:31The people who lived here.
00:22:34They must have had a wonderful life.
00:22:38Well, I hope they did.
00:22:40Wilford Butler must have believed in something.
00:22:42I believe it.
00:22:42Look at that stone fireplace.
00:22:44Parquet floor.
00:22:45The mahogany.
00:22:46This table.
00:22:48And you probably think this place is made of wood, right?
00:22:50Well...
00:22:51Wrong.
00:22:52You know what his grandson told me?
00:22:54Underneath that wood, there's two feet of stone.
00:22:57The foundation is eight bricks wide.
00:22:59Now, someday, they're going to come in here, and they're going to tear this place down,
00:23:02and they're going to build little tract houses all over this property on quarter acre and half acre lots.
00:23:08And that bulldozer's going to come up that hill toward this house.
00:23:14And it's going to get the surprise of its life.
00:23:18They built a kingdom out here.
00:23:21Only nobody's left.
00:23:22No?
00:23:23Butler has a grandson.
00:23:25No, no.
00:23:26He's probably like the rest of us.
00:23:28He wants money.
00:23:30You know, he's asking $50,000 cash for this place, and for the only way he can get,
00:23:34or he can get at least $250,000.
00:23:38But he won't take his time.
00:23:41So he'll get screwed.
00:23:43Do you want to go upstairs now?
00:23:51Soon.
00:23:54You know, one of the great pleasures in life
00:23:56is the pleasure of anticipating pleasure.
00:24:00Isn't it?
00:24:03We are very close now, aren't we?
00:24:06Sure, honey.
00:24:08Very close.
00:24:09Yes.
00:24:13I don't see any beds yet.
00:24:18Keep looking, honey.
00:24:19Butler said the place is furnished.
00:24:33It's furnished.
00:24:34Anything doing?
00:24:56No, sir.
00:24:57But look at this.
00:24:58More football, huh?
00:25:00Look how they smirred that quarterback.
00:25:02Look at his arm.
00:25:03Got no tie now.
00:25:04Well, Tass, how about that telephone up at the Butler house?
00:25:08Is it working?
00:25:10Well, try it now.
00:25:11I'll wait.
00:25:12Hello?
00:25:21Oh, yes.
00:25:23Miss Howard.
00:25:24Yeah, the phone's working fine.
00:25:25Very nice of you to go.
00:25:27Good night.
00:25:28Honey, I'm going down in the car to get some cigarettes.
00:25:29Be back in a minute.
00:25:30Okay.
00:25:31Don't get lonely.
00:25:32No, no.
00:25:32No, no.
00:25:33No, no.
00:25:34No, no.
00:25:35No, no.
00:25:36Hey, honey.
00:25:37Honey, I'm going down in the car to get some cigarettes.
00:25:41Be back in a minute.
00:25:42Okay. Don't get lonely.
00:26:12Don't get lonely.
00:26:42Did you get your cigarettes?
00:27:00Yes. Yes, I did.
00:27:02May I have one?
00:27:04Sure.
00:27:05It's the most amazing thing.
00:27:07These cigarettes come in these very small packages these days.
00:27:12Oh, that's for me?
00:27:17Can I open it?
00:27:19Oh, no, no, no.
00:27:21Our Christmas is day after tomorrow.
00:27:24Is that an order?
00:27:27Yes, ma'am. That's an order.
00:27:37Am I?
00:27:38Say, can I help myself?
00:27:39Okay.
00:27:40Words Head disturbance.
00:27:42Oh, no.
00:27:44Don't know what to do.
00:27:46We met a lot of piss off.
00:27:56See what moments that goes for.
00:27:59But if you remember...
00:28:03Oh, my God.
00:28:33Oh, my God.
00:29:03Oh, my God.
00:29:33Sheriff Mason.
00:29:42Bill, someone's calling from Butler House.
00:29:45Okay, put them on.
00:29:48Go ahead now.
00:29:49Mr. Carter?
00:29:52I'm not Carter.
00:29:56Who is this?
00:29:57The owner.
00:29:59Butler.
00:30:00I'm worried, Sheriff.
00:30:02Carter's not here.
00:30:03Speak up.
00:30:05I can't hear you.
00:30:07I can't.
00:30:08I'm sick.
00:30:10Can you come here?
00:30:12What is it?
00:30:13What's wrong?
00:30:14His car's here, but he's gone.
00:30:17Won't you come?
00:30:18Okay, okay.
00:30:20Now, you stay put in that house.
00:30:22I'll wait for you.
00:30:23Please, hurry.
00:30:25I'm afraid.
00:30:27Now, take it easy.
00:30:28I'm coming.
00:30:37Mr. Butler, are you done?
00:30:39Tess, I've come back.
00:30:43What's that?
00:30:44Tess, I want to see you again.
00:30:48Hello?
00:30:49Who is this?
00:30:51You know me, Tess.
00:30:53It's Mary Ann.
00:30:56Tell the mayor.
00:30:58Tell them all.
00:30:59I'm waiting in my father's house.
00:31:05Tess, it's so lonesome here.
00:31:10Don't be long.
00:31:15Hello?
00:31:17Hello?
00:31:18Hello?
00:31:19Hello?
00:31:29Oh, my God.
00:31:59Where is everybody?
00:32:16Hello?
00:32:18Oh, Maggie.
00:32:19Thank goodness.
00:32:21What is it, Tess?
00:32:22Something's come up.
00:32:24Something urgent.
00:32:25Can you start early?
00:32:26Oh, honey, I'm watching TV.
00:32:27Maggie Daly, you get yourself over here.
00:32:30Where is it?
00:32:32Just get moving, Maggie.
00:32:34Just please, hurry.
00:32:35Sure.
00:32:39Sure.
00:32:41Bye.
00:32:42We are all not reading.
00:32:45Goodbye.
00:32:51I've got this for my people.
00:32:58Bye.
00:32:58Bye.
00:32:58Bye.
00:32:59Bye.
00:33:00Bye.
00:33:01Bye.
00:33:02Bye.
00:33:03Bye.
00:33:03Bye.
00:33:04Let's go.
00:33:34Let's go.
00:34:04Come in.
00:34:10It's open.
00:34:15Okay, mister, that's far enough.
00:34:17What do you want here?
00:34:20Mayor.
00:34:21Try again.
00:34:22My father's not home.
00:34:24And don't move.
00:34:25You want me to put my hands up?
00:34:27No.
00:34:28Just stay there.
00:34:29What are you staring at?
00:34:32I seem to remember you from the road.
00:34:34That's why I'm holding a gun.
00:34:36You scare me.
00:34:37That makes sense.
00:34:38Thanks.
00:34:39Does everybody carry one here?
00:34:41You can ask the sheriff when he gets here.
00:34:43I'll call him.
00:34:44I'm sorry to disappoint you, but the sheriff's office is empty.
00:34:48How do you know?
00:34:51I was just there.
00:34:53Who are you?
00:34:56Jeffrey Butler.
00:34:59Oh, you're the one who's selling the house?
00:35:02Yes.
00:35:02Have you any ID?
00:35:06Come on.
00:35:07Don't laugh at me.
00:35:08I want your ID.
00:35:10Some maniac escaped from Margaretville.
00:35:12You're the one who's selling the house.
00:35:17Okay.
00:35:25Put it on the table.
00:35:31Now go back.
00:35:42California license.
00:35:46Lucky you.
00:35:48Would you like to see my maniac card from the asylum?
00:35:53They'll give you one when you escape.
00:35:55There's a big Scarlet M on it so people won't get confused.
00:35:59Okay.
00:36:00Look, I'm sorry about the gun.
00:36:02My father's in Wilton getting your money.
00:36:07All I want to do is to get into my house.
00:36:09This sheriff's deputy might have a key.
00:36:12He's about the only one I know of.
00:36:15Where's he?
00:36:16You go down the road about a mile and a half
00:36:18till you come to a white house with a white fence.
00:36:21And then you can't miss it.
00:36:24Thanks.
00:36:25That's okay.
00:36:27Merry Christmas.
00:36:31Same to you.
00:36:39If I don't call back in an hour.
00:36:42What?
00:36:43Call the mayor.
00:36:45Or Mr. Tone.
00:36:46And nobody else.
00:36:49Promise me you'll do that.
00:36:51Well, sure.
00:36:53Mark it down, honey.
00:36:55So you'll have it.
00:36:57Sheriff to 301.
00:36:59I'm heading west on route 5 to Butler House.
00:37:02You'll hear from me.
00:37:09What the hell?
00:37:15Is that light out there?
00:37:50We're black.
00:37:56501.
00:38:01Rolling.
00:38:03Rolling.
00:38:04Rolling.
00:38:05Rolling.
00:38:07Rolling.
00:38:08Rolling.
00:38:08Oh, my God.
00:38:38I don't know how to do it.
00:38:53Hi.
00:38:54Hi.
00:38:55Did you find the deputy?
00:38:56No, I wasn't there.
00:38:58Oh.
00:39:00I was thinking.
00:39:02Isn't your lawyer supposed to be at the house?
00:39:05The door was locked.
00:39:07His car was there, so I borrowed it.
00:39:09You mean you stole a car?
00:39:12Yeah.
00:39:14Keeping it warm.
00:39:16What if he needs it?
00:39:17Let him find me.
00:39:19Who's coming to dinner?
00:39:21Oh, Daddy.
00:39:23We always have dinner every Thursday.
00:39:26Do you want something?
00:39:28No, I ate at Paradise Hotel.
00:39:31Yeah, I know. It's awful.
00:39:33What about a drink?
00:39:35Yeah.
00:39:38It's cheap bourbon, but that's a big favorite around here.
00:39:44Do you want ice?
00:39:46No, straight.
00:39:51You look tired.
00:39:52I am tired.
00:39:55Well, here's to a fast dollar.
00:39:57Cheers.
00:39:58Cheers.
00:40:07Why did you decide to sell the house?
00:40:11Needed the cash.
00:40:13After all these years?
00:40:16I need it now.
00:40:17What's it like on the inside?
00:40:24You know, I've never seen the inside.
00:40:26When I was a child, my father told me to stay away from it,
00:40:29or something terrible might happen.
00:40:31Sort of like a haunted house.
00:40:35I haven't seen it either.
00:40:36You're gonna sell it and you've never seen it?
00:40:39Yeah.
00:40:42I don't know. It's too bad.
00:40:44It's about the only place to see around here.
00:40:46Oh, I forgot.
00:40:48Someone keeps calling with a message from my father.
00:40:51She says that she's waiting at your house.
00:40:54In the reception room.
00:40:57What woman is waiting in my house in the reception room?
00:41:00Oh, I don't know.
00:41:01It's...
00:41:02It's not a voice that I know.
00:41:07I better go out then.
00:41:09Can I come too?
00:41:11What for?
00:41:13I'm pushing.
00:41:17I suppose you'll be going back to California soon.
00:41:23California.
00:41:24You said you lived there, remember?
00:41:26No, I'll be traveling.
00:41:28Jeff, look.
00:41:30It's the sheriff's car.
00:41:57There's a light.
00:42:02Look at that tombstone.
00:42:07Pretty cheerful.
00:42:13Who bears the cross shall wear the crown.
00:42:16Wilfred Butler.
00:42:18My grandfather.
00:42:20Oh.
00:42:21Oh.
00:42:26Someone left their sunglasses in the snow.
00:42:29They're the sheriff's.
00:42:32My lawyer's missing.
00:42:33So is the sheriff.
00:42:35You get strange phone calls.
00:42:38And now someone's fascinated by my grandfather's grave.
00:42:43Let's get out of here.
00:42:46You still want to go to my house?
00:42:48Yes.
00:42:50But...
00:42:51But I don't want to go alone.
00:42:54Listen.
00:42:55I'm not nervous.
00:42:56Well, of course you're not.
00:42:57Oh, it's the cold.
00:42:58I'm shaking from it.
00:43:01Let's get out of here.
00:43:04Okay.
00:43:05Good help in town.
00:43:06It's 10 minutes drive.
00:43:35Good night, Mr. Towman.
00:43:36Good night, Mr. Towman.
00:43:56Have a nice holiday.
00:44:05Good night.
00:44:35Good night.
00:45:05Good night.
00:45:06Good night.
00:45:11Good night.
00:45:12The deputy's not here.
00:45:13But Towman is.
00:45:14Who's Towman?
00:45:15Come on.
00:45:16You'll see.
00:45:31Mr. Towman, wait!
00:45:32Kate! No, please. I have to talk to you.
00:45:39I'm sorry. This is Jeffrey Butler. He's the one who's selling the house.
00:45:43He can't get inside the place. And my father's gone to Wilton.
00:45:47So we wondered...
00:45:55Anything wrong?
00:45:56He'll tell us.
00:45:59Tess.
00:46:02Has gone to his house.
00:46:04Why would she go there?
00:46:06I don't know.
00:46:08Anyway, she won't get in. You say it's locked.
00:46:15He says she hates the place.
00:46:17Would you like to drive there?
00:46:22Diana could stay here, lock herself in.
00:46:25I need a key.
00:46:32I need a key.
00:46:35I need a key.
00:46:36I'm sorry.
00:46:37I am a key.
00:46:38Give me some key.
00:46:40I'm coming.
00:46:42Let's see you and get on with me.
00:46:44Let me know.
00:46:46Let's see.
00:46:47It's all.
00:46:48I can't let you go.
00:46:49Let's go.
00:47:19Oh, man, this isn't my house. It's Tess's.
00:47:49Well, Tess isn't here. Are you satisfied?
00:48:00She must have gone to my place.
00:48:03Why wouldn't she go there?
00:48:09She hates it.
00:48:10Maybe she went to see the woman who's there.
00:48:17Someone called the mayor's house before.
00:48:20Said she'd be waiting.
00:48:28What is it?
00:48:28What is it?
00:48:36What is it?
00:48:42Hello, Jeff?
00:49:12Hello, is anybody there?
00:49:19Who is this?
00:49:24I'm Diane Adams.
00:49:27I spoke to you before.
00:49:30Bring your father to the house.
00:49:35This is Marianne.
00:49:38Tell him I have the diary.
00:49:42I'm waiting.
00:49:43Who are you?
00:49:46He'll know.
00:49:48Christmas Eve, 1935.
00:49:53Hello?
00:49:57Hello?
00:49:58Hello?
00:50:00Hello?
00:50:04Hello?
00:50:07Hello?
00:50:08Hello?
00:50:09Hello?
00:50:13Call 704, signal 10. 704, seat Charlie. Call 704, signal 10. 704, seat Charlie.
00:50:43Call 704, signal 10. 704, seat Charlie.
00:51:13Call 704, signal 10. 704, seat Charlie.
00:51:43Sheriff, I saw your car.
00:52:02Bill, is that you?
00:52:06Bill.
00:52:22Tess, you can't see me, but I can see you.
00:52:33Oh, yes, I remember that face.
00:52:41You're older now, and fatter, but still, Tess.
00:52:51And you're frightened, aren't you?
00:52:57Don't be afraid.
00:53:00I won't help you.
00:53:03Take my hand.
00:53:06Take it, Tess.
00:53:16The person on the telephone said 1935, Christmas Eve.
00:53:23But that's not the beginning.
00:53:25In 1927, Butler House was restored by Wilfred Butler.
00:53:30After that, I find social notes, parties, nothing special.
00:53:37Then, in 1930, Butler's wife, Catherine, dies of tuberculosis.
00:53:43In August 1933, it starts, Wilfred Butler's daughter is cruelly attacked and raped.
00:53:53Her name is Mary Ann.
00:53:55The same name is the caller who left those messages tonight.
00:53:59She's 15, then.
00:54:02On May 2, 1934, Mary Ann Butler gives birth to a son, Jeffrey Butler.
00:54:12Jeff.
00:54:13Early in 1935, Butler House is turned over to a Dr. Robinson as an asylum for mental patients.
00:54:24And then, Butler goes on to say that he has committed his own daughter.
00:54:30Mary Ann will live at the asylum.
00:54:32There's no end to this story.
00:54:36It's been carefully cut out of all the papers.
00:54:39Why would Toman do that?
00:54:41You scared me.
00:55:06What happened?
00:55:07What happened is, uh, Tess has 40 birdcages.
00:55:13Toman is hysterical.
00:55:15Everybody's at my house but me.
00:55:16It's cold outside and you forgot to lock the door.
00:55:20Jeff, how old are you?
00:55:24How old am I?
00:55:25You mean, how many years have I lived?
00:55:27No.
00:55:28There's a lot in the paper about your family.
00:55:30I don't want to talk about my family.
00:55:33Wait a minute.
00:55:34There's a woman calling and she says her name is Mary Ann.
00:55:37That was your mother's name, wasn't it?
00:55:40My mother died in childbirth.
00:55:44That's when I started traveling.
00:55:46It's not what the papers say.
00:55:51What's your point?
00:55:51I just thought that you should read something for your own good.
00:55:59Nothing you could tell me about my past to future would be for my own good.
00:56:09Where is the paper?
00:56:10It's on the table.
00:56:11It's so stupid to lie.
00:56:35I missed the whole event.
00:56:36Jeff, maybe your mother's still alive.
00:56:40Maybe she's waiting for you at the house.
00:56:46I don't know.
00:56:53Come on.
00:56:55No more side trips.
00:56:56Let's go out there.
00:56:57I don't know.
00:57:17Atonement card!
00:57:47Jeff, look!
00:58:15Oh, my God!
00:58:32Stay back!
00:58:33It's Talman!
00:58:34Stay back!
00:58:36She's dead.
00:59:04She's dead.
00:59:11She's dead.
00:59:18She's dead.
00:59:23She's dead.
00:59:30She's dead.
00:59:35She's dead.
00:59:43His hands.
00:59:47Somebody cut off his hands.
00:59:50You killed him.
00:59:51You killed Talman.
00:59:55He's asking for help.
00:59:57You killed him.
01:00:02You're in the car.
01:00:03You're in the car.
01:00:09You killed him.
01:00:16She's dead.
01:00:19You killed him.
01:00:22Let's go.
01:00:52What's her house?
01:01:17The keys.
01:01:19He took them.
01:01:22He took them.
01:01:52Hello?
01:01:56Hello, Mr. Mayor.
01:01:59Yes, what?
01:02:00This is Marianne Butler.
01:02:03I'm calling from my house.
01:02:07Won't you come over here, Mr. Mayor?
01:02:09We're having a reunion.
01:02:14Everyone's here.
01:02:17Even your daughter.
01:02:19Hey, Mr. Mayor.
01:02:20Oh, God.
01:02:22Amen.
01:02:23Come on.
01:02:25You come back home.
01:02:26Come on.
01:02:28Come on.
01:02:28I don't know him.
01:02:33Come on.
01:02:34Come on.
01:02:37Go on.
01:05:08Ladies and gentlemen, now quiet please. I, uh, I post toast.
01:05:23A doctor, please.
01:05:26By Christmas of the first year, I knew that I must act, not for myself, but for my helpless
01:05:32child.
01:05:33Led him to create this institution.
01:05:35Our friend.
01:05:36I had no plan.
01:05:37All I knew was that I must take her from these men with their promises, their lies.
01:05:46Shall we?
01:05:47For he's a jolly good fellow, for he's a jolly good fellow, for he's a jolly good fellow,
01:06:01which nobody can deny, which nobody can deny, which nobody can deny, for he's a jolly good
01:06:10fellow, which nobody can deny.
01:06:14I knew that they would gorge themselves into a stupor that afternoon.
01:06:20It was their celebration.
01:06:22I expected no less.
01:06:24Since they had come into my house, they had acted as if they owned it.
01:06:29They had behaved like poor relations, half guilty, but finally unable to control their appetites.
01:06:50After dinner, they danced and drank as they usually did.
01:07:14All the time, Robinson would smile and reassure me.
01:07:18They expected me to believe, because I had no choice.
01:07:24Wilfred, trust me.
01:07:29He really believed Marianne would be well.
01:07:32He saw a light.
01:07:33There is a light at the end of a long tunnel.
01:07:37Believe me.
01:07:39There is a light at the end of a long tunnel.
01:07:48He was ready.
01:07:49I knew it.
01:07:50Drunk and fat and full of his own importance.
01:07:51I left then.
01:07:53I left then.
01:08:00I left then.
01:08:03I left then.
01:08:07I left then.
01:08:12I left then.
01:08:16I left then.
01:08:17I left then.
01:08:20I have fallen.
01:09:22My cruelty to Marianne was inhuman.
01:09:49I know that.
01:09:52I had loved her.
01:09:54I had fathered our child, Jeffrey.
01:09:56I had brought her to this.
01:10:00But I swear that on that afternoon,
01:10:03all I wanted was to save my child.
01:10:06My hope was to get her away from that house.
01:10:24Also, I wanted to set free those other wretches who had so long been abused by the doctors.
01:10:30I know that.
01:11:00I knew what they might do if these inmates were freed.
01:11:05And this is my guilt.
01:11:09I knew.
01:11:11And still, I freed them.
01:11:14I knew.
01:11:15I shall not believe in you.
01:11:15I don't know.
01:11:17I know.
01:11:18I knew what they were doing.
01:11:19I thought they were fils.
01:11:20I thought they were taking home.
01:11:20I knew.
01:11:21I knew.
01:11:22I knew what they were doing.
01:11:22But I was like, hey, I sure.
01:11:23I knew.
01:11:23And all this is my friend.
01:11:24I knew.
01:11:24I knew it.
01:11:25I knew it.
01:11:26I knew it.
01:11:27I knew it.
01:11:28I knew it.
01:11:28I knew it.
01:16:21Since that Christmas, I have lived in prisons and asylums, lived anonymously, as an animal.
01:16:33I have wandered in bitterness until all seasons have become as one, and that is a season of vengeance.
01:16:51Jeff?
01:17:16Jeff?
01:17:23Wilfred Butler is still alive.
01:17:29This is still his house.
01:17:33Your grandfather died in 1950.
01:17:37He was burned to death in this house.
01:17:41My grandfather poured gasoline over a squatter he found here.
01:17:48But Tom wanted to believe he was dead.
01:17:51They still do.
01:17:55This house was an asylum.
01:18:02There was a massacre by the inmates.
01:18:05Tess.
01:18:06Tolman.
01:18:07The sheriff.
01:18:08Your father.
01:18:09No.
01:18:10All inmates.
01:18:11They killed my mother.
01:18:12In this room.
01:18:17You.
01:18:45Who's there?
01:18:50Who's there?
01:19:15Who's there?
01:19:25Butler.
01:19:31Oh, no.
01:19:34No.
01:19:36God, no.
01:19:46Daddy.
01:19:49Daddy.
01:19:54Diane.
01:19:57Jeff.
01:19:59Jeff.
01:20:01No.
01:20:03Jeff, why?
01:20:05Why?

01:21:03Help me!
01:21:09I spent that night weeping.
01:21:19By morning there were no more tears.
01:21:27I know that my father and Jeffrey both thought they were shooting at killers.
01:21:33But they were simply the last victims in that house of victims.
01:21:39And now, a year later, they will tear down Wilfred Butler's monument.
01:21:49But they can never destroy my memories of what happened here.
01:21:55The End
01:22:07THE END
01:22:37THE END
01:23:07THE END
