00:00which our top story of the day here is something that may have slid by the radar a little bit for
00:04people who are in the state of illinois you're probably going to notice a little bit of added
00:08tax to some of your sports bets although you may not even notice if i didn't tell you
00:11a new fee 25 cents charge on the first 20 million dollar online sports bets taken in the state each
00:18year in illinois the fee will increase to 50 i'm sorry 50 cents per bet for every single bet taken
00:24after the initial the initial 20 million dollar bets this is a report from the chicago tribune
00:29the new fee is expected to bring 36 million dollars annually to the state so basically a quarter
00:35on each bet up to 20 million 50 cents after 50 million and that's how you get a higher tax rate
00:43without having a higher tax rate in sports betting in the state of illinois okay in the state of the
00:48nba eastern conference finals it's a wrap it's official the indiana pacers are moving on to
00:53the nba finals with the opportunity to take on the oklahoma city thunder later in the week
00:58125 to 108 the final and it's the first time since the year 2000 that the pacers have made it
01:04to the nba finals needless to say tyrese halliburton was a superstar but probably the indiana pacers do not
01:10win this series without the contributions of one pascal siakam who had another big game
01:17in game six 31 points and five rebounds after the game was over rick carlisle tyrese halliburton talking
01:25about the opportunity to go to the championship you know to be able to to win the series um the way we
01:33did today at home in front of our fans is is huge you never want to go back on the road in game seven
01:38and so um you know we're grateful we're grateful for a lot of things today um our guys just
01:46decided that we it was going to be our kind of game it was going to be a fast game and we kept
01:53speed in the game and they kept coming and uh you know we get up 15 and then all of a sudden there's
02:01a turnover a turned ankle and then it's nine you know and it was just back and forth back and forth
02:07but two resilient teams and and we were able to be resilient once again tonight to do with this
02:15group you know we got to the same spot last year fell short um and man we just worked our tails off
02:20as a group to get back here it's been a uh you know a bumpy road with our start and uh man just
02:29really proud of resilience this group we had so many different guys chip in we've been through so many
02:32things this year um and we just kept pushing and uh like i said i'm just i'm just really proud of
02:38this group and meanwhile the new york knicks have to be disappointed with the outcome of their season
02:43but really should they taking the pacers all the way to six games in the eastern conference finals i
02:47know they were favored but really good season for them here's tom thibodeau after the loss uh yeah we
02:53didn't close the half well so i thought uh right before the half you know that when they got
02:59sort of had that spark that's also set the tone to to start the third and uh you know they got into
03:07the open floor and that was a problem so it was hard to make up the ground not sure that accomplishes
03:13the word that we're gonna use here but i think the way this team progressed this year is um
03:20for me it was fun because there's a lot of a lot of people saying we couldn't do a lot of things
03:28a lot of uh
03:30a lot of negativity around what we were trying to accomplish and the way we
03:38just kind of put blinders on and went to work and um
03:42that's what i'm most proud of with this team and um
03:46that's yeah i'm just proud of how we kind of
03:51saved the course obviously like you said not winning tonight and being knocked out but um
03:57just proud just proud of our guys simple as that let's get to the pga tour where sometimes you can
04:07debate who the best player is in sports and a specific sport there's no debating on the pga
04:13tour it's scotty scheffler he wins again won the memorial tournament finished 10 under par joining
04:18tiger woods is the only tournament winners consecutively at the memorial which is a course
04:24designed by jack nicholas here's scotty scheffler on capturing yet another championship yeah i mean i had
04:30a four shot lead on standing on 15 t and then i birdied 15 and part 16 which is not bad golf and
04:37all of a sudden it was a two shot lead um so i did what i was supposed to do you know i hit
04:41a good putt there on 15 that just grazed the edge hit another really good putt on 16 that came up just
04:46short and um i knew if i continued to execute the way that i did that um i was gonna have a good
04:52chance to win the tournament and i told myself when we're standing there on 17 t you know if ben
04:55eagles 15 birdies 16 and 17 18 you know he we deserve to be going into a playoff and that's
05:01kind of the conversation i have with myself and you know i can't stop him from playing great golf but
05:06all i can do is just go out there and try to execute and you know hit the fairway on 17 hit the
05:09green give myself a good look and then um you know like i said when you're in the rough out here i mean
05:13it's really challenging and you know ben put in the rough on 17 which makes that hole extremely
05:18difficult and um you know paid the price for an errant tee shot world series matchup and major league
05:25baseball the rematch over the weekend goes in favor to the dodgers although the yankees did
05:30finally win a game uh yesterday in this series dodgers just really clobbering the ball throughout
05:35yankees win seven to three that was the final on sunday night meanwhile some very tenuous news for
05:41the arizona diamondbacks their prize free agent pitcher and starter and you know potential
05:47cy young every year corbin burns left to start versus the nationals early with an elbow injury
05:52he's going to have an mri set for today obviously this is not a player that the diamondbacks can
05:57afford to lose but it certainly seems like as we'll hear from corbin burns that it is indeed some
06:03sort of arm issue yeah i mean just just kind of really sort of get tight on me um obviously saw
06:09the reload starting to drop and and the movement of the pitchers was not where we wanted to be um so
06:14we kind of got to the point there in the fifth inning that um tried two or three times to put away
06:18abrams and just couldn't do it and um just got to the point where the tightness was just too much
06:23so weighed him out and didn't didn't feel like we needed to push any farther so uh hopefully be
06:28caught early hopefully it's not bad um but we'll see how concerned what's your kind of concern level
06:33right now i've never had any like it before um so i really have nothing to compare it to or or no
06:39um my body does a pretty good job of of telling me when i need to not do things and when i can push
06:45things and it was telling me not to push it so um hopefully it was me kind of shutting things down
06:50before it got too bad but um i won't really know until to be with that is it tightness in the elbow
06:56not sounding great there all right the rangers beat the cardinals eight to one jacob de grom another
07:16good start six innings pitched one and run rangers take two out of three from st louis francisco
07:22lindore and juan soto yes remember him they each homer the mets beat the rockies five to three if
07:27you have not been paying attention to the rockies this season you're not alone colorado is now nine
07:32and fifty on the season nine wins and fifty losses that's the worst record through 59 games
07:38in the history of baseball since 1901 that's crazy all right padres put up four runs in the
07:43seventh they beat the pirates six to four meanwhile from the bad to the good the detroit tigers best
07:48record in baseball zach mckinstry scored on a wild pitch and they beat the
07:51royals one to nothing the major league home run leader right now is seattle mariners catcher cal
07:58raleigh he hit his 23rd home run of the season yesterday the mariners topped the twins two to one
08:03randy rosarino hit a walk-off single and the brewers are red hot right now they've won seven games in a
08:08row they swept the philadelphia phillies which certainly is impressive welcome back to newswire here
08:14on sports grid we have pat evans with us from legal sports report.com i'm going to weigh in on a
08:19couple of different hot topics around the world of sports betting pat great to have you back here
08:23on a monday all right so more creativity coming from another state very hard to change those taxes
08:30right to get them from 15 to 20 and 20 to 25 so instead of doing that let's try a different way
08:36says the state of illinois let's charge a quarter on every bet placed and we're going to even charge a
08:42little bit more if you guys are even making more money that's a smart way to go about it pat
08:46yeah so i i think to your point i mean we always talk about when i come on here when we're talking
08:53about different legislation across the country you know anything can happen who knows what can get
08:57added to things taken out of things what's going to pass what's not going to pass even if something
09:01looks like a slam dunk it might not pass well of course everything for states every state has to pass
09:07a budget and illinois was winding down their budget process last week and in basically the 11th hour
09:14some democrats uh they control the the legislator there in illinois said hey let's go ahead and add
09:20a per bet tax to sports betting and it was shuffled in and included in the balanced 55 billion dollar
09:29budget and as part of the 800 million dollar tax increases that they've added uh to the you know in
09:35the state uh in that process and i don't see why governor jb pritzker won't go ahead and sign it he
09:42of course signed a budget last year that changed the sports betting tax from 15 percent to a tiered
09:48system between 20 and 40 percent and what's kind of crazy about that is it went into effect last july so
09:55we don't even know the full effect of that tax increase and here we are adding more and to to note that
10:02is draft kings and fan duel both made it into that 40 percent tool or tier in january so they've been
10:09paying that 40 percent tax now for a couple months and we're not even done in that full fiscal year of
10:14that new tax so now we've got this new tax that's been added and will go into effect in july that adds
10:19to your point 25 cents per bet on the first 20 million bets and then that jumps up to 50 cents for
10:26every bet after that 20 million bet now you can probably guess who the sports books are that have
10:32generated more than 20 million bets in a year fan duel and draft kings you know there were uh let's see
10:38where are my numbers 370 million bets in illinois last year those were the only two that took more
10:44than 20 million um each taking 150 million each uh so that's going to be a huge amount to them added on
10:51uh you know last year illinois sports books uh contributed 276 million dollars in taxes and
10:57that's again before that full transition uh that was the calendar year so before the full transition
11:02to that tiered tax system if you just added these per bet taxes on that that's an extra 159 million
11:09dollars uh to that and fan duel would have paid 74 million dollars extra and draft kings 67.9 million
11:15dollars extra so this is a huge amount for those two sports books operators in particular
11:20um and you have to wonder who's kind of behind it you know i've heard some things i'm not comfortable
11:25telling them yet uh but it's just a really interesting tax uh hike there and and yeah you
11:31know we have seen lots of states consider tax increases to help fund these budget shortfalls and
11:37of course sports betting is kind of an easy target because that's kind of how a lot of them passed in
11:41the first place was hey let's use this bring it into the regulated market and make taxes uh for our state
11:47and so now you've got a lot of course governor westmore in maryland just signed a five percent
11:52increase uh during his budget process so that goes from 15 to 20 percent um ohio of course we had
11:59mike dewine a couple two or yeah two years ago increased from 10 to 20 this year he wanted to go
12:06from 20 to 40 and lawmakers said no but to again to your you know forecasting or uh we went from uh we
12:16have a lawmaker introducing a two percent handle tax on top of that 20 revenue tax so yeah we've got
12:24lawmakers getting creative and trying to find new ways uh to get you know more taxes out of this
12:29industry and we'll see what happens the sports betting alliance if you want to go to lsr you know
12:34we did just get our story up because this happened on saturday um there's a lengthy sports betting
12:41alliance uh statement that include you know they represent that mgm fan duel draft kings and fanatics
12:47lengthy go ahead and read it uh at lsr but it does basically just say this is preposterous this is
12:53unfair to us um why did you do this rather than you know look at legalizing online casino which would
13:00have increased lots of taxes but also helped us you know build an industry and and and help the economy
13:05here in in illinois so it is really interesting and then you kind of look at okay well this is a huge
13:10amount of extra taxes that fan duel and draft kings are going to pay maybe they're going to shift
13:14resources a little bit as we see missouri coming online later this year and see you know what kind
13:20of you know what kind of effects that might have in the long run but yeah this is crazy uh in in that
13:27you know who knows what other states are going to follow this you know kind of like everybody's
13:32trying to look at new york with 51 percent right tax rate you know everybody might say hey if
13:38illinois is doing this let's do it or maybe the ohio handle tax passes you know the only other
13:43state with handle taxes tennessee maybe other states are saying hey let's do that so certainly
13:48interesting tax developments in the sports betting industry here late in the session
13:52yeah and illinois certainly a very big betting market as well all right now let's move on to
13:57another big betting market this is ohio what is the latest here i know you have a column up at
14:02legalsportsreport.com about casino gaming that's the other hot topic of the year is which states are
14:07pushing this through which are which are not letting it go yeah you know coming into the
14:13session in january we saw quite a bit of states kind of thinking about let's go ahead and legalize
14:18online casino or at least talk about it get those conversations started ohio was one of them they
14:22even started it late in the session late in the year last year because they're a full full year
14:26session and you know it is just getting it started you know there were dozens of sports betting
14:32bills uh iterations that had to happen in ohio before sports betting ultimately passed and so
14:39you know we've had this study that came out last year from legislators that said hey this might be
14:43a good idea it can be a great revenue driver for the state let's go ahead and look at it um this
14:48should be the model we do it uh it was kind of quiet in ohio this year as a bunch of other states
14:53considered it kind of let it go to the wayside including neighboring indiana um now we're kind of
14:59looking at you know we're getting plenty of discussions uh in ohio there's been a couple
15:05hearings and committees in both the house and senate there are differing kind of details once
15:11you get to tax rates and fees and and things like that but it is basically the 11 casino and racinos
15:17in ohio would get licenses um for online casino and we'll see where this goes you know they're still
15:23sitting in those committees they've held multiple hearings and each one was for pro people who are
15:30in you know support of it people who are opposing it you got you know the the normal people that are
15:36coming out for sports betting online casino and everything on both sides so we'll see what happens
15:41if they advances out of either committee there however governor dewine who we've talked about already
15:47today um has come out and said you know let's be cautious about this because it does put a casino
15:52in everybody's pockets it's interesting to see him kind of come out warning against it uh when he's
15:58also so aggressive in the taxing of the sports betting industry you'd think he'd say maybe we can
16:04make tax revenue from this too um so you know there's kind of an interesting take from him but yeah
16:09you know ohio is certainly the one that seems most probable that's left on the table i know there's
16:15new discussion in maine that just restarted back up uh that i'll be covering with you later this week
16:20probably so um yeah ohio again as i said earlier anything can happen in a legislative session maybe
16:27ohio passes this year maybe it doesn't all right finally uh las vegas aces wnba season underway who
16:33are they partnering up with which which uh online gaming company yeah so bet mmg bet mgm announced last
16:39week their first partnership with an nba part uh wnba and that's the las vegas aces it was a cool thing
16:44there's a cool little uh you know non-profit component to it really nice and it all just kind
16:51of funnels into the growth of women's sports right now that they're seeing massive uh increases in bets
16:56on the wnba which i guess corresponds with the viewership increases we've seen in the last year
17:02or two uh so yeah i wouldn't be surprised if there's quite a few more of these coming from
17:07different operators and that mgm include great to see you pat enjoy the rest of your week thanks
17:14again for coming on newswire thanks as always craig talk to you soon
