01:36But do you feel like you're a different sort of level of reliable, good player at majors than maybe day-to-day elsewhere?
01:42It seems like you've managed to peak at these events pretty consistently.
01:47I think I have kind of typically had pretty good success at the slams.
01:54I think especially early in my career, I was always kind of aiming for the slams and trying to schedule to peak at the slams.
02:02And funny enough, I think now later, I'm playing way more the week before and things like that.
02:09So I've kind of shifted my mindset, but I just seem to do well at these two-week events.
02:17Do you have any idea why that is? I mean, everyone wants to do well at the majors, but you actually do.
02:22I don't know. I think I have just kind of always put a lot of emphasis on it and really kind of just buckled down.
02:30And funny enough, it was actually a goal when I started with Bjorn to put more emphasis on all of the other weeks
02:38and try to have more consistency throughout the season and not just four times a year.
02:43So that was something that I have actually really worked hard on and tried to do.
02:47How much of your success do you chalk up to sort of like nuts and bolts things like shot selection
02:58and, you know, improvement on forehand and different serve and stuff like that?
03:02And how much do you chalk up to improvement in intangibles and the way you're thinking
03:09and sort of your psychology and mental approach to just tennis in general
03:16and also obviously big events like this?
03:20I think it's hard to quantify one thing or say it's more one thing or the other.
03:27I think my mentality has really helped make more good decisions in big points.
03:36But I also think that it's kind of forced me to continue to play my way.
03:44I think in the past I would maybe get a little bit more tentative
03:46and kind of play a little bit more defensively in big moments
03:51and now trying to make the push to continue to play the way that I was playing
03:58in order to get up in scores.
04:02But then at the same time I think adding in the slice has helped a lot
04:06and change pace and keep me in rallies.
04:09So I think it's kind of just a little bit of everything.
04:12I'd like to ask you to look ahead if you could to your next match.
04:23Two of you have played several times.
04:28One has two separate things.
04:29One is if you could look ahead to that,
04:31what do you think for you will be the key to win that match?
04:37I think Coco is obviously pretty dominant on Klay.
04:43I would say it's probably one of her best surface to play on.
04:47So it's obviously a big challenge.
04:51I think for me it's going to be a lot about
04:54trying to balance going after things
04:59but knowing with her ability to cover the court
05:02you're going to have to win the point multiple times
05:06before it's actually over.
05:08So I think that's always one of the trickier things
05:11when you're playing someone who moves as well as she does.
05:14And then you also have the threat against her
05:17of if at any point you kind of lose control of the point
05:22she's going to be the aggressor.
05:24So I think the biggest thing is the balance of going for things
05:30but with enough margin that it's a repeatable ball
05:34shot after shot.
05:36And are you somebody who prefers to play somebody
05:42that you have a lot of experience against?
05:44I think this will be your sixth matchup between the two of you.
05:48Or do you prefer playing somebody
05:52who maybe hasn't seen you play?
05:55Obviously you haven't played against Ken too
05:58but maybe you feel as though you have an advantage
06:01if it's someone who's not used to dealing
06:03with what you present on court.
06:07I think that at this point it's pretty rare
06:12to play someone that you haven't played against.
06:15So in some ways it's almost exciting
06:19just because it's someone new
06:22that you haven't gone up against.
06:24but it happens so rarely
06:26that more often than not
06:29you don't really have the opportunity
06:30to prefer one thing or the other.
06:33And I think when you've played someone so many times
06:36sometimes it's hard
06:39because you start analyzing everything
06:41and you know they're doing the same thing.
06:43So I think sometimes you go out expecting
06:47maybe something completely different
06:50than you've ever seen
06:51but a lot of times I feel like
06:53it's very similar matches
06:54and it's just who's executing better that day.
06:59Hi, congrats.
07:01So Jessica Pegua,
07:03she said that she has had
07:05a little bit of tough time
07:07with this in a clay court swing
07:09because it's pretty long
07:11and you know you guys have to stay away
07:14from your home
07:14and especially this year
07:17it's two weeks back to back
07:19the tournament.
07:21So I was wondering
07:22how did you feel
07:23and how did you handle
07:24that kind of rough schedule?
07:27I actually went home
07:29after I lost early in Rome.
07:32So in some ways
07:34I think it was a blessing
07:35in disguise for me
07:36because I was able to go home
07:37for a little over a week
07:38and that really helped
07:41just reset my trip
07:43and coming back to Paris
07:45it felt like
07:46it was a whole new trip.
07:48It gets very long.
07:50Last year
07:51even not playing the
07:52I guess last year
07:53was also two weeks
07:54but staying over
07:55and playing Strasbourg
07:56by the time I got
07:57to Roland Garros
07:58I was pretty crispy
07:59and ready to go home.
08:01So it's definitely
08:02it's really hard
08:03and I think the difference
08:05of this swing
08:07versus the kind of
08:09spring swing
08:10is that there's not
08:11a grand slam
08:11at the end of it.
08:13So it's definitely
08:14a hard thing to balance
08:16but looking back
08:18maybe a good thing
08:20that I lost early in Rome.
08:24It really hasn't been
08:25automatic for major winners
08:27especially first time
08:27major winners
08:28to have a good result
08:29at their next major
08:30whenever it is
08:30a lot of them lose early.
08:32I'm wondering how you feel
08:33you've been able
08:34to sort of process that.
08:35this is the biggest gap
08:36between the two majors
08:36between Australia
08:37and France
08:38if that helps
08:38on the calendar
08:39to reset
08:39or if you feel
08:40like you've taken it
08:41as a positive
08:41or it's been irrelevant
08:43to your run here
08:44but being a quarter
08:45is a relatively high bar
08:47that a lot of people
08:48don't clear even.
08:50I think it's been
08:51good for me
08:52to have the time
08:53in between.
08:55Just it's allowed me
08:56more time
08:57to kind of process
08:58and reset
08:59and figure things out
09:00and then get back
09:01out there.
09:02So I think
09:03I've definitely
09:04taken advantage
09:05of the fact
09:06that I've had
09:07a few months
09:07to kind of recalibrate.
09:12Congratulations Madison.
09:13I don't know
09:14whether this is
09:14an easy question
09:15or not
09:16but you and Coco
09:18you're different ages
09:20but you're
09:20from the same state
09:22in the same trade
09:23you know each other
09:24well.
09:24Can you just talk
09:25about her
09:26and your relationship
09:28the energy
09:29and how you've
09:31been interacting
09:32any good stories
09:33anything like that?
09:36I remember
09:38meeting Coco
09:38for the first time
09:40and in my head
09:42she was like
09:43nine years old
09:44she probably
09:44wasn't that young
09:45but she was
09:46so young
09:46and not even
09:49on the pro tour
09:50yet
09:50and just kind
09:52of watching her play
09:53I knew that
09:54she was going
09:55to be someone
09:55that was going
09:56to be pretty dominant
09:57pretty quickly
09:57she just carried
09:58herself with
09:59such poise
10:01for as young
10:01as she is
10:02and even to this day
10:03I'm always so impressed
10:04by the way
10:06that she handles
10:07the pressure
10:08and all of it
10:10at such a young age
10:11is one of the things
10:12that I think
10:13that she's done
10:14a phenomenal job at.
10:15It's been really fun
10:17kind of getting
10:19to see her
10:20do so well
10:21at such a young age.
10:24Sometimes I feel
10:25very old
10:26when talking
10:27to Coco
10:28because she says
10:28things
10:29and I'm like
10:29yeah I don't get that.
10:31So there's definitely
10:32there's definitely
10:35a big age gap
10:36that is sometimes
10:38shockingly
10:40obvious.
10:46Just to clarify
10:47one thing
10:48and then ask
10:50a question
10:50when you talked
10:51about having
10:52to win the point
10:53like four times
10:54against Coco
10:55that's just
10:55accentuated I imagine
10:57on the red clay
10:58because it's hard
10:59to get hit
10:59through the court
11:00and then
11:02my other question
11:03just when you are
11:04either with
11:05or watching
11:06or playing Coco
11:07is there like
11:08flashbacks
11:08to when
11:09you were that age
11:11and had a ton
11:12of you know
11:13like attention
11:14and promise
11:14and pressure
11:15on you
11:15and people
11:16talking about you
11:17and just sort
11:17of like
11:18I don't know
11:19I don't know
11:20if nostalgic
11:21is the wrong word
11:22but I think
11:23you probably know
11:23what I'm talking
11:24about
11:24you have that
11:25sensation ever
11:25I think I'm always
11:27just really impressed
11:29with the fact
11:32that she handles
11:32it so well
11:33because she's had
11:34even more success
11:36and more media
11:38attention than I had
11:39and I know that
11:40it was definitely
11:41really hard for me
11:42at times to handle
11:43it and I feel
11:45like you watch her
11:46and she just takes
11:47it all in stride
11:47and continues
11:48to just be
11:51100% her
11:53and I'm always
11:54just really impressed
11:55by it
11:55last question
11:56okay for a couple
11:57of days now
11:58the juniors
11:58are here speaking
11:59of you at a young age
12:00and everybody's
12:01so full of aspirations
12:03and hopes
12:03and wants to be
12:04there where you are
12:05is there one piece
12:07of advice
12:07you could give
12:09the better players
12:10there
12:10maybe forget about it
12:12and just let
12:13everything come
12:14or work hard
12:14is there any kind
12:15of advice
12:15you would give them
12:16I think the biggest
12:18thing is that
12:19there's a lot
12:21of pressure
12:21to kind of
12:24immediately make it
12:25when you're
12:26a top junior
12:27and I think
12:28sometimes you lose
12:30the you kind of
12:31lose the fun
12:33of all of it
12:34and all of the
12:35just amazing
12:36experience that
12:37you get to have
12:38through being a
12:39professional tennis
12:40player and I think
12:41the biggest thing
12:42from all of it
12:44is that it's really
12:45never too late
12:46I obviously
12:47had a lot of
12:47success earlier
12:48in my career
12:49and then didn't
12:51quite get across
12:52the line until
12:53a few months ago
12:54so there's really
12:56there's no time
12:58limit and I think
12:59a lot of us
13:00as time goes by
13:01and we haven't
13:02gotten it
13:02and we haven't
13:03gotten it
13:03feels like time
13:04is running away
13:05so I think
13:06it's just really
13:07there's no time
13:08limit
13:08anything can happen
13:10at any moment
13:10you
13:23you
