00:00You're in the hall seat now for some real serious offences.
00:03I'm not interested in it.
00:04Are you being accused of an armed robbery?
00:06When a criminal strikes...
00:0820 now.
00:09Don't put me down now.
00:10Listen to me!
00:11Do anything that seems to be a threat to life,
00:13you'll be shot, do you understand?
00:14..terrified victims deserve justice.
00:17To have something like this held to your throat,
00:20absolutely petrifying.
00:22Innocent people going about their day-to-day lives,
00:25they didn't deserve this in the slightest.
00:28First, detectives must identify a suspect.
00:34This lad.
00:35It's him.
00:36Suspect's quite prolific.
00:37I'm running in to get this guy in custody.
00:40Police! Drop to your knees!
00:42Do not move!
00:46Next...
00:47Police!
00:48..they must hunt for concrete evidence.
00:50It's like George and the Jungle, innit?
00:52That's him, innit?
00:53Oh, perfect!
00:54Then question the suspect face-to-face.
00:57This is your opportunity.
00:58If you're going to tell us something, then tell us it now.
01:00Did you put the knife to his throat?
01:02Absolutely not.
01:03What are we doing?
01:04Get out of my way!
01:06Will the evidence stand or fall?
01:09That is that.
01:10That is that.
01:11Will the suspect confess or deny everything?
01:15Hands up! Hands up!
01:17Will the police uncover the truth in time?
01:2024 hours is a very limited period of time,
01:22so carry out a full investigation.
01:24Because time is ticking and we've got eight hours left.
01:27The best way to safeguard the public is to have the suspect in custody
01:30and remand him to prison.
01:31Boom! All the charges. Yes!
01:36This time...
01:37That's the one who's done it.
01:38That's the one who's done it.
01:41..a violent assault...
01:43The strike for the neck, so powerful.
01:45..leaves a man fighting for his life.
01:48It's a really serious attack. It's an attempt to murder.
01:50Police must track down the person responsible...
01:53So he pops out of here and then heads this direction.
01:55..before he can strike again.
01:57The risk to the public is very high.
01:59All our efforts will be to get him in custody.
02:03THEY CLATTER
02:15LINE RINGS
02:19VOICEMAIL
02:24VOICEMAIL
02:26PHONE UNLOCKS
02:28VOICEMAIL
02:32There's clothing everywhere, on the floor, on his clothes,
02:35and I couldn't believe that.
02:36OK, stay on the line.
02:37I'm just trying to get help from HVA.
02:41Police are dispatched to the scene
02:43of a potentially fatal stabbing.
02:45OK, can you just give me a description of the suspect?
02:48He's about 5'11".
02:50Do you know what clothes he was wearing?
02:52Black arms, white jacket, and then top is green.
02:56If the suspect is still on it, still there?
02:58He's gone.
02:58He's in his flat.
03:00He's in his flat.
03:05The first officer arrives at the scene.
03:10Her priority is to locate the injured victim,
03:13then apprehend the suspect.
03:15Have you seen anything?
03:16No, I haven't seen anything.
03:18Is somebody in there?
03:19Yeah, I'm going to get out of the car.
03:21Robert, is there a 2-3?
03:22Can I come in urgently, please?
03:24Yeah, I've got quite a bit of blood outside the address.
03:27What's the ETA for the unit?
03:29I'm at the single crate.
03:32With no sign of the victim outside,
03:34the officer must search the property where the armed
03:37attacker was last reported.
03:59MUSIC PLAYS
04:03Police!
04:06It's the police!
04:13It's the police!
04:17Remember, sorry, 2-3, I've checked the flat,
04:18there's nobody in there.
04:19There's quite a bit of blood outside,
04:22heading towards the high street way.
04:25BEEP BEEP
04:26Thank you, are you able to monitor towards the high street for anyone who looks on the device?
04:32As additional officers rush to the scene, there is no sign of either the victim or the suspect.
04:38Hello.
04:40He's stopped doing the neck.
04:41Yeah.
04:42He's taken himself to the hospital as far as I'm aware, and I think he's driven himself there.
04:46So he's bleeding really bad.
04:49A unit is dispatched towards the hospital in search of the victim.
04:53We've got a receiver in here at 4-1.
04:55The victim heading to A and E is in place.
05:01While at the crime scene, more witnesses are coming forward to help identify the attacker.
05:06Both of these ladies have witnessed it, and she's got a video of him as well.
05:09Oh, brilliant, brilliant.
05:13Hello.
05:14You say you've got a video of who's done it?
05:16Can I have a look?
05:20That's him there.
05:21That's the one who's done it?
05:22Yeah.
05:23Who's stabbed him?
05:25That's the one who's stabbed?
05:26Yeah.
05:30He's got a pair of scissors on him.
05:31Foxtrot Sierra 2-6, we've just been told that it's a pair of scissors that have been used.
05:36The suspect has got tan complexion, dark black hair.
05:40He's wearing light blue jeans and black trainers.
05:44Direction of travel, turning right at the restaurant down the alleyway.
05:49Officers relay the description and image of the suspect to CCTV control.
06:05Camera operators can now track the attacker's movements after the incident.
06:19We've got the scene, we've got the target.
06:21We've got the high street, we've got the bar, we've got the maximum clearance.
06:25Are you confirmed?
06:26No, it's a C.
06:30I've called police.
06:31You've called police?
06:32Do you want to speak to my colleagues who's here for me?
06:36Further witnesses have identified the victim as a worker in the restaurant next door to the suspect's flat.
06:43Cos as soon as this happened, I was here, and then he just ran cos he wasn't eating so much.
06:48Do you know the person who's done it?
06:53Do you know his name?
06:58You don't know his last name?
07:01Do you know why it has happened?
07:10XH, we've just got another witness who was here at the time of the incident.
07:13The suspect apparently does live at this flat, and it seems likely that suspect and victim are known to each other.
07:24At the hospital...
07:26Is he OK to talk to me?
07:27...officers have located the severely injured victim.
07:34So initially this male's got what appears to be a single entry wound to the left side of his neck.
07:43He explains that there's been a bit of an argument with the male from the flat above,
07:48which has escalated and resulted to this male stabbing him once to the neck with a pair of scissors.
07:58With the victim and multiple witnesses confirming the attacker lives in the upstairs flat,
08:04officers re-enter the property to search for evidence.
08:09No signs of any disturbance, is there?
08:14Scissors.
08:16Could have discarded, there's nothing.
08:20Right.
08:28There's a pair of scissors in here.
08:30The discovery of a possible weapon is crucial evidence.
08:35But with the suspect still at large, will police be able to track him down?
09:00Police, what's the emergency?
09:06In Scunthorpe.
09:13A man has been left with serious injuries after being stabbed in the neck.
09:21Police have secured footage and have the first name of the suspect who is on the run.
09:25Do you know his name?
09:27You don't know his last name?
09:30They've found a potential weapon.
09:38And begun to track his movements following the attack.
09:42Right.
09:51Tasked with investigating the violent attack...
09:55..are detectives at Scunthorpe CID.
09:59So, Log 309, it's a stabbing outside the restaurant.
10:04You can see the blood on the floor.
10:06So, Log 309, it's a stabbing outside the restaurant.
10:11The officers have established the scene and there's a lot of blood there.
10:17The victim has bled out from a nasty stab wound to the neck.
10:22He's currently at Scunthorpe General Hospital.
10:25They fear he may have nicked an artery, so may be transferred to Hull Royal Infirmary.
10:29It's a really serious attack. It's an attempt to murder.
10:32The suspect has used a weapon and he's gone straight for the neck.
10:37Does the suspect and victim know each other?
10:39Unsure at the moment, but would appear there's a restaurant,
10:43a takeaway on the ground floor and a flat above.
10:47And there's been some dispute with the victim who works in the restaurant below
10:52and the tenant who lives above.
10:55The victim who works in the restaurant has come round.
10:58We've assumed some sort of argument.
11:00It spilled onto the street where he, the suspect,
11:03has stabbed him with, we believe, a pair of scissors.
11:06A pair of scissors has been retrieved from a bin at the scene.
11:13At this moment in time, the suspect is outstanding.
11:16So, the next steps are, sort the CCTV out, start with Civic
11:20and then work your way round the high street with all the shops around there
11:23to hopefully get an excellent facial of the suspect
11:27and also any images of the actual incident.
11:31Yeah.
11:32There's also witnesses who have seen the incident,
11:36so they'll need speaking too.
11:38OK, happy? Yeah.
11:40Right, let's crack on then.
11:45DC's Callum Harbouron and Mark Davey begin by analysing CCTV.
11:51So, we've got the footage. Yeah.
11:54Cameras have captured the moments surrounding the stabbing.
11:57Blue jeans, white jacket.
11:59This is believed to be the suspect.
12:04We can see that there's some sort of altercation ongoing.
12:07He has pushed the victim.
12:10Looks agitated, doesn't he? He's aggressive, yeah.
12:12Yeah, he's very aggressive.
12:16Almost looks like he's saying,
12:17off, run him out, isn't he? Come outside.
12:19There's a child there as well.
12:21There's some sort of altercation. He's not happy, is he?
12:23He doesn't look happy.
12:25Just from his body language, obviously, it's quite zoomed out, but...
12:30Oh, yeah. You can see the punch.
12:32Oh, Jesus. Oh, play that again, play that again.
12:34That was all very fast, wasn't it? Yeah.
12:36So, we think to be the victim.
12:39You can see the suspect's in his face.
12:42He throws one punch, goes back.
12:44Suspect, look at his hand movements, look at his arm.
12:47Yeah.
12:49The strike for the neck, so powerful.
12:52He could have killed him, easy.
12:54I tell you what, he's lucky.
12:56He's very, very lucky. Yeah, he is.
12:58This is half-past two in the afternoon on a Saturday,
13:01Scunthorpe High Street, town centre.
13:03You've got someone with scissors in their hand,
13:05willing to use them to stab someone in the neck.
13:07It's clearly a dangerous individual.
13:10It looks like one of his colleagues, one of the victim's colleagues,
13:13has got his hand up, applying pressure to...
13:16..to his neck to stem any bleed.
13:19You can see the suspect is just circling around.
13:21He's still there, he's not running away.
13:23It's cold, isn't it?
13:25Very calm, walking away. Yeah.
13:28For all he knows, he could have fatally injured that guy.
13:34This is probably the most serious offence
13:36we've had in our office this year.
13:40It appears to have been two people that have known each other
13:44and fallen out of maybe something trivial,
13:47but it's turned very violent.
13:52Our offenders used a bladed article, scissors in this case,
13:56to stab the guy in the neck.
13:59With a guy like this, the risk to the public is very high.
14:02All our efforts will be to get him in custody for public safety.
14:07We can't have someone using this kind of violence on our street.
14:13Detectives continue to examine the CCTV
14:16from the moments after the attack.
14:20So, the victim's gone off that way,
14:22and our suspect's circled right round and come back to the scene.
14:28That's his flat door there.
14:30Yeah, it looks like he's gone into his flat door. Right.
14:33I wonder if he's still got them scissors.
14:37He's come out of his flat.
14:39He's then come out this alleyway. Is that him there?
14:41Yeah, he's obviously took his jacket off. Yeah.
14:44Same blue jeans, the black cap, now he's got a yellow jumper on.
14:48Right.
14:49We've got West Street car park and we see him in the far distance.
14:52He's walked towards the high street.
14:54The next camera footage we have is him popping out of here.
14:57And he's still not running, is he? He's not running, he's walking.
15:00He's not running, he's not looking about.
15:02Police about, is anyone chasing him? No.
15:05Oh, there we go, look. He's going towards the newsagents.
15:09There's bound to be lots of cameras in there,
15:11so hopefully we'll get a good facial image.
15:16He'll leave the shop now.
15:18So, we've got him here, walk straight across.
15:21He'll walk around onto Froddenham Road, turn left,
15:25and then that's where we lose him.
15:27We haven't got any more footage after then.
15:30Having plotted the suspect's initial escape route after the attack,
15:34detectives head out to get a better image of his face.
15:39The main focus point that we're focused on now
15:42is getting a clear identification of who the suspect is.
15:45Yeah, we've got a good, clear image of the restaurant,
15:50but it's not zoomed in, it's not zoomed out.
15:52It's not zoomed in, it's not zoomed out.
15:54It's not zoomed in, it's not zoomed out.
15:56We've got a good, clear image of the restaurant,
15:59but it's not zoomed in enough where it's good enough
16:02to get some facial IDs and identification of the suspect.
16:07I mean, we're off to the scene now just to do some CCTV inquiries,
16:11get a picture of what's going on,
16:13and most importantly, get a clear identification of who is the suspect.
16:19This is where the stabbing occurred, right in this doorway here.
16:23You've got the entrance to the restaurant right next to it,
16:27and this is where he had the big argument with the victim.
16:33The detectives first scope out the restaurant exterior
16:37for any CCTV cameras.
16:39Obviously, pointing out the camera at the top of here,
16:43we need that CCTV footage.
16:45And that's our main priority.
16:47I think from the business owner, that may take some time to get.
16:52Next, they retrace the suspect's movements through the town.
16:57So he pops out of here... Yeah.
16:59..and then heads this direction. From that way.
17:05Specific footage covers down this road.
17:08Got the suspect popping out there and walking up towards the shop.
17:12Yeah. He comes in here with... Yeah.
17:15Good camera, that. Yeah. Point straight down. Yeah.
17:18There'll be good cameras inside. Yeah.
17:20Ideally. And this is the shop he comes in. Yeah.
17:23Great.
17:33Shut there.
17:35We've been to the shop. We've got the CCTV footage from there.
17:39Yellow jumper, coat, and he's wrapped up in his arm.
17:43Picks up a can of beer, like it's a normal Saturday afternoon.
17:47He doesn't look worried, he doesn't look scared.
17:49He's not looking about to see if there's any police outside
17:52or if anyone's following him.
17:54Leaves the newsagents.
17:56We've got the footage from Civic,
17:58leaving the shop towards this direction
18:00and heading into the housing estate.
18:02Yeah.
18:03The attacker has disappeared into the large residential areas
18:07to the west of Scunthorpe.
18:10Behind here is a housing estate
18:12where you've got dozens and dozens of roads, hundreds of houses.
18:17Police intensify their efforts to find the suspect.
18:23There's a unit that are going to be looking for the suspect.
18:26They're going to be looking for him.
18:28Police continue their efforts to find the suspect.
18:33There's a unit that are being tasked with
18:35see if they can find out where he is
18:38and then do some door-to-door.
18:41Our mission is to arrest him today.
18:46As the manhunt continues,
18:49back in CID,
18:51detectives have now received crucial eyewitness accounts.
18:54What's important about this statement
18:57is she's able to say that she knows the suspect.
19:00She knows him by name.
19:01She knows him as a guy called Viral Ion.
19:04It's a breakthrough.
19:06A bystander has given police the suspect's full name.
19:10Another key witness.
19:12We've got a written statement from her
19:14and, importantly, she heard what was said
19:17as well as she saw what happened.
19:20She writes,
19:21I got outside, I saw the victim standing near Viral's flat door.
19:24Viral was shouting at him, saying,
19:26I will hit you
19:27and holding a pair of scissors in his right hand.
19:29The scissors were around 10 to 12 inches long,
19:32black handles with thumb holes
19:34and silver one-inch thick blades.
19:38She said she's got between them
19:40and said to Viral to stop and pass me the scissors.
19:45She writes,
19:46As soon as I moved out of the way,
19:48Viral took the scissors,
19:49gripped in his right fist
19:51and stabbed him once between the ear and the shoulder
19:54on the neck.
19:56She gets quite graphic here,
19:57blood spurted from the victim's neck
19:59all over himself and the pavement
20:02and he put his hands up to his neck
20:05and that mirrors what we see on the CCTV as well.
20:09So this statement really puts some meat on the bones for me
20:12so I can see what's happened
20:14and what I thought was said between the two.
20:17I can confirm from this lady's statement
20:19that the suspect is upset with the victim.
20:23He said the words, I will hit you.
20:26It's a threat, a threat with the scissors.
20:31Detectives now need to verify
20:33the man named by witnesses
20:35is the attacker they tracked from the crime scene.
20:38So Viral Iron is the suspect we believe
20:40to be responsible for the stabbing.
20:42We've got an old custody picture
20:43when he was previously in custody.
20:46He's got records obtained from Interpol
20:49which show that he's got convictions
20:52in both Romania and Germany
20:54for what they call larceny,
20:56which is theft, dishonesty, offences.
21:00Obviously comparing the footage,
21:02the custody picture that we've got of him previously
21:04and the shop footage,
21:06just from the images you can quite clearly see
21:08it is the same fella.
21:12Massive step, the witnesses aren't wrong.
21:14And they've got the right person.
21:18With the attacker confirmed as Viral Iron,
21:21his details are circulated throughout Humberside Police Force.
21:25It's a great sort of investigation.
21:27We still need to get the footage
21:28from the actual restaurant itself,
21:30which I'm hoping to be a lot more clear
21:32and a lot more decisive of what's gone on.
21:34But we've got a suspect identified now.
21:37It's worrying because he's still on the streets.
21:39We haven't got him locked up yet.
21:41Arrest attempts are ongoing.
21:42But we've got someone who has stabbed someone in the neck
21:45in a public street on a Saturday afternoon
21:48with no care in the world.
21:50We need to get him custody quick.
21:57As the net closes in on the suspect,
22:00there's an unexpected development.
22:04I'm going to have to ask you to stand up for us.
22:07Stand up? Yeah, yeah. OK.
22:10Suspect number one, Viral Eon, is handing himself in.
22:15OK, so the time is at 20.55, OK?
22:18And at this time, you're under arrest for attempt murder.
22:20Yeah, I know, I know. All right?
22:22You do not have to say anything, but it may harm your defence.
22:24Do not mention when questioned,
22:25something that you later learn in court.
22:26Anything you do say may be given evidence.
22:28OK?
22:30Just like that. Thank you.
22:34Having been searched, the suspect is taken into custody.
22:39Do you want to just go in there, Viral?
22:49OK.
23:00Just remember, you're under a caution, mate.
23:10Do you want to say who you've been arrested for?
23:12Attempt murder.
23:18Right, Viral, you've been arrested
23:21because we need to investigate what happened
23:24and we think that you may have caused injury to this person.
23:28But you can be kept here for up to 24 hours.
23:31Now, that will be from the time that you were arrested
23:34at Fulcott Police Station.
23:36At some point, probably tomorrow,
23:38officers will come and talk to you in detail about what's happened
23:42so that you can explain it in your own words, OK?
23:45So that we can take your voice into consideration.
23:50Viral Eon will have a chance to rest and reflect
23:53before he is interviewed in the morning.
23:57How will he explain his actions
23:59and the allegation of attempted murder?
24:06GUNSHOTS
24:13Oh, Jesus.
24:15In Scunthorpe, detectives are investigating a brutal stabbing.
24:20There's an attempt murder.
24:21The suspect has used a weapon and he's gone straight for the neck.
24:25This is probably the most serious offence
24:27we've had in our office this year.
24:30Police have obtained crucial CCTV of the attacker's movements.
24:34Oh, there we go, look.
24:35Got a good, clear facial image.
24:38And identified their suspect.
24:40Got some accounts from witnesses.
24:42She knows him as a guy called Viral Eon.
24:46But as detectives closed in on the suspect, he gave himself up.
24:50Are you under arrest for attempted murder?
24:52Yeah, I am.
24:53Well, at this point, we've got all we need to see.
24:56What colour do you need?
25:04As detectives arrive in CID for the early shift,
25:08Viral Eon has already been in custody overnight.
25:12So we've had an update from the ops inspector.
25:15The actual suspect has handed himself in
25:17at the front of Scunthorpe Police Station,
25:20so he's now in custody.
25:22I would imagine he's handed himself in
25:24because he knows we're looking for him.
25:26Perhaps he's remorseful, perhaps he wants to get it off his chest.
25:29The risk to the public was extremely high
25:31with this man being out there.
25:34We've seen how violent he can be,
25:36so to have him off the streets is a big relief for us all.
25:39From the point of arrest, police have 24 hours to charge a suspect,
25:44apply for an extension or let them go.
25:47To be honest, we haven't got a lot of time today.
25:49We're up against the clock.
25:52We need an interpreter for this chap
25:54and we need a good few hours to get the CPS process done
25:58at the end of the day.
26:00And all those little things added together are going to make it a long day.
26:09While officers wait for an interpreter...
26:12OK. Cheers, mate.
26:15..news comes in of the victim's condition.
26:21You know, I've seen some injuries over my years,
26:24but that's as shocking as you see.
26:28The doctors have briefed us that the blade, the scissors,
26:31has gone in and nicked an artery.
26:35You've got to say he's lucky to be here,
26:37lucky to be alive with an injury like that.
26:41In the interview, viral eye on the suspect,
26:43we'd be told it's a significant injury he's caused.
26:47Potentially could have been life-threatening.
26:50We know now it isn't, but could have been.
26:53And he's not to know that.
26:55When you're bringing down scissors and sharp objects into people's necks,
26:58you don't have that level of skill where you know you're not going to kill him.
27:02Could have killed him there and then, at the scene.
27:07With an interpreter now present...
27:10Hello, mate. We're going to have a chat with your solicitor, all right?
27:14VRL Eon is brought in for interview.
27:19As an investigator, I'm open to have him tell me just the truth
27:22from start to finish.
27:24How that incident unfolded.
27:26And if he did deliberately stick them scissors into the guy's neck, then why?
27:32I don't want him to see the CCTV yet.
27:34I want him to give us a free recall about what happened
27:37for that suspect to tell me his version of events,
27:42as he remembers it, if he's going to talk to me, that is.
27:50I'm DC-13-16 David from Scunto.
27:53Can you say your full name, please?
28:06The interview is going to be about an arrest for attempt murder.
28:11A man on Saturday afternoon in Scunto was assaulted.
28:15Are you responsible for assaulting him with scissors?
28:23I see.
28:26Can you tell me, leaving nothing out, what happened?
28:49They told him and confirmed that, yes, I have changed the lock
28:52and that because the key had somehow damaged the lock of the door.
29:06VRL Eon claims the victim had a duplicate key to the flat
29:10without his knowledge.
29:22And he said, I need to get into the flat to fix something.
29:31And I found that very weird.
29:33Why do you have to come into my flat to fix something
29:36that's in relation to your restaurant?
29:53HE SPEAKS IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
30:11VRL Eon goes on to claim he found a pair of scissors
30:14left behind by the victim.
30:17HE SPEAKS IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
30:19In that very moment, when I saw that scissor, I was so, so angry.
30:23What is he intending to do with that scissor?
30:37I went after him and I said to him,
30:40you need to pay for the phone and I'll answer me.
30:43What do you want to do?
30:44What did you intend to do with the scissor?
31:07I had that scissor in my hand
31:10and then I tried to punch him
31:13and by mistake I've caused that injury.
31:28We've started the first part of the interview process.
31:31He's given me an account, which puts him at the scene.
31:35He's met with our victim.
31:38He describes the victim wanting to get into his flat
31:42upstairs above the restaurant and he's not happy about that.
31:46He's also said that the victim fought with him first,
31:50that he's the one that's been punched in the face
31:53and that his instinctive reaction is to punch him back.
32:00Detectives have received new CCTV evidence
32:03that shows the incident in more detail.
32:06So we've got all the footage from the restaurant,
32:09both inside and outside cameras.
32:11The differences between this and Civicab,
32:13it's all in high definition.
32:15All the figures that we can see, we can see their faces.
32:18They can now test the accuracy of the suspect's account.
32:24Good facial image of the suspect.
32:26That is a violent act.
32:28There's no shadow of a doubt that is him.
32:31What we can see, 12.45, he's on the street.
32:35Can't appear in his hand. He's drinking alcohol.
32:39Oh, there's the victim.
32:41This is when it starts, isn't it?
32:43They're having a conversation about these keys, it would appear as well.
32:47He's got the keys in his hand.
32:49And they're both leaving the building.
32:52Suspect whose body language is changing as we speak.
32:55Look, he seems to be remonstrating with him.
32:58It would appear they're going to the flats,
33:01which is immediately in front of where they're stood.
33:05And you can clearly see... He's aggressive, isn't he, now?
33:08He's really aggressive. Yeah.
33:10You can see his body language, pointing. Shouting.
33:13Indeed, there he is. Comes back into the restaurant, doesn't he?
33:16So that's our victim.
33:18Doesn't look fierce, is he, the victim? No, no.
33:22Suspect's back in the business premises.
33:25He's looking for the victim. He is, isn't he?
33:27So we're back to a period where he's just hanging around the front of the shop.
33:31Yeah. Still drinking his alcohol.
33:35Oh. Oh, yeah. There we go.
33:37Scissors back pocket.
33:44And the victim's back.
33:47Scissors in his back pocket.
33:51Gets them all. Whoa.
33:53He's pointing them straight at the victim's face. Jesus Christ, yeah.
33:55He's pushing him back.
33:57Look at him. Jesus Christ.
33:59And this is before the stabbing. He's got the scissors out.
34:01He's pointing them at the guy's neck.
34:03Is he intending on using them already?
34:05Looks like he's got a plan to use them, doesn't he? Yeah.
34:08If you look, the victim doesn't seem bothered by the suspect.
34:12Walking away from him, the suspect clearly doesn't like that.
34:15Yeah.
34:17Whilst the attack is not covered by the restaurant cameras,
34:21detectives can use the street CCTV
34:24to challenge VRL Eon's claim that the stabbing was in self-defence.
34:29He still looks agitated. Face to face with him, isn't he? Yeah.
34:34The victim has assaulted the suspect first. Yeah, yeah.
34:37However, the suspect has got scissors
34:40and he's in the face of the victim.
34:43And I think the victim is more than in his own right... Yeah.
34:47..to get the suspect away from him.
34:49As the victim punches out towards VRL Eon,
34:53VRL Eon reaches around with his right hand
34:56to his right back pocket from his jeans,
34:58takes the scissors out,
35:00and I think that movement is a deliberate stab. Yeah.
35:03There. It's not a punching action, is it? No, it's not.
35:07He's clearly wanting to use them.
35:09It doesn't matter what anybody says, the camera doesn't lie.
35:12We've got it there. Yeah. That's exactly what's happened.
35:18VRL Eon said that he's the one that's been punched in the face
35:22by the victim and that his instinctive reaction is to punch him back.
35:27His account just doesn't quite stack up
35:29with what I know has happened from CCTV.
35:32He's armed himself with the scissors
35:34and motioned as though, I'm going to stab you with these,
35:37and it's coming for your neck.
35:39And this happened just 30 seconds before the actual stab itself.
35:43It's almost like a dry run.
35:46He knows where the scissors are that can reach for them
35:50and he's holding them in a position
35:54where he was intending to make a stab with them.
35:58With this evidence contradicting VRL Eon's self-defence account,
36:03how will he react when officers confront him with their breakthrough?
36:16In Scunthorpe, a man has been left with serious injuries
36:20after being stabbed in the neck with a pair of scissors.
36:25You know, I've seen some injuries over my years,
36:27but that's as shocking as you see.
36:29Suspect number one, VRL Eon, claimed the stabbing was accidental.
36:44But CCTV of the attack contradicts his account.
36:48I think that movement is deliberate stabs. Yeah.
36:51There. He's clearly wanting to use them.
36:54It doesn't matter what anybody says, the camera doesn't lie.
36:57We've got it there. Yeah. That's exactly what's happened.
37:03Having analysed all the evidence of the case,
37:06DC Mark Davey must now present his findings to VRL Eon.
37:11I have got a great hand for this interview.
37:14Witness accounts, great CCTV, images from both inside and out.
37:21And we can see the attack and we can see how it happened
37:24and we can see the injury thereafter.
37:28I'm happy I know what happened
37:30and I want to get his side of the story on disc.
37:39You mentioned earlier in the account that...
37:43Have you ever fallen out with... before?
37:48When you reacted and you punched out...
37:51Did you go to punch him straight in the face?
38:07I've got some CCTV to show you.
38:13You can see what I believe is you.
38:18Correct, yeah.
38:21There's no sound of this.
38:23Yeah.
38:40VRL Eon maintains he was acting in self-defence.
38:43Here, he give me, I give him. That's it.
38:48DC Mark Davey moves to question him on the witnesses' account.
38:53I've got a line or two from a witness to read to you.
38:58This is a lady who was on the street at the time.
39:01She's saying...
39:03..was standing near VRL's door.
39:06She calls you VRL.
39:08VRL was shouting at him,
39:10I will hit you.
39:12Did you say that?
39:19She walked over and stood between you and...
39:25She said to you, pass me the scissors.
39:28Did she say to you, pass me the scissors?
39:34She's saying that you did not pass her the scissors.
39:41She's saying, as soon as I moved out of the way,
39:46VRL took the scissors back out of his pocket.
39:51And that you held the scissors gripped with your right fist.
39:55He stabbed him once between the ear and shoulder on the neck.
40:11Look, now I see this one, I think, no.
40:15And I have here this for the cut.
40:19He's like that, yeah?
40:21But you see, I think, like that.
40:24Here, I have this one.
40:26At the point where he hits you,
40:29could you have stopped and walked away?
40:34Did the thought of walking away ever cross your mind at that time?
40:42I don't think so, I don't think so.
40:45After you hit him, did you realise you'd cut him?
40:51Was you able to help him?
40:54Was you able to help him?
41:09All I remember is I kept screaming on the street.
41:12I don't know what to do, I don't know what to do.
41:24HE MUMBLES
41:36During the interview, he's been challenged that this was a deliberate act.
41:40We know from a witness she begs for him to give these scissors up
41:44and to move away and stop what he's doing, and he continues.
41:48We can also see he has an opportunity to walk away
41:52when he's been punched in the face, but he doesn't do any of that.
41:56Do you know what's happening next?
41:58We need to go get a decision on the case.
42:01He knows he's in a lot of serious trouble for this
42:04and the consequences are extremely high for him.
42:09Yeah, yeah, number one.
42:11I would fully expect a charge, which is the next step.
42:15OK? All right.
42:22Detectives send their case to the CPS for a charging decision.
42:29And after a review of all our evidence and people's accounts, CCTV,
42:34we decided to present the case to the CPS
42:37as a Section 18 GBH, Grievous Bodily Harm,
42:40and compare that to attempt murder.
42:42The sentences, the penalty for our defendant, are going to be the same.
42:46Viral, you're going to come up to the desk,
42:49we've got a charging decision for you.
42:52With just 20 minutes remaining on his custody clock,
42:56VRL Eon receives the decision.
43:00You are charged with the following offences.
43:03On 6th April, Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire,
43:06you unlawfully and maliciously wounded...
43:10..with intent to do him grievous bodily harm
43:12contrary to Section 18 of the Offences Against the Persons Act, 1861.
43:16And the second charge is you had with you,
43:18without good reason or lawful authority,
43:20an article which had a blade or was sharply pointed,
43:23namely a pair of scissors contrary to Section 1391
43:26and 6 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1988.
43:31I think, for us, it's a positive outcome.
43:34This is a horrendous attack
43:36in the middle of a Saturday afternoon on the high street,
43:39and there's only one place for him, and that's prison.
43:42VRL Eon is remanded into custody to await trial.
43:46It takes VRL Eon off the streets, and he was our risk.
43:52There's justice for the victim.
43:54He suffered a horrendous injury, and he almost lost his life.
43:58By chance, he didn't.
44:01He has a family, and it's not something that he'll ever forget.
44:16.
44:46.
