06:36Further witnesses have identified the victim as a worker in the restaurant next door to the suspect's flat.

07:48which has escalated and resulted to this male stabbing him once to the neck with a pair of scissors.
07:58With the victim and multiple witnesses confirming the attacker lives in the upstairs flat,

09:21Police have secured footage and have the first name of the suspect who is on the run.

10:25They fear he may have nicked an artery, so may be transferred to Hull Royal Infirmary.
10:29It's a really serious attack. It's an attempt to murder.
10:32The suspect has used a weapon and he's gone straight for the neck.

10:39Unsure at the moment, but would appear there's a restaurant,
10:43a takeaway on the ground floor and a flat above.
10:47And there's been some dispute with the victim who works in the restaurant below
10:52and the tenant who lives above.

11:00It spilled onto the street where he, the suspect,
11:03has stabbed him with, we believe, a pair of scissors.
11:06A pair of scissors has been retrieved from a bin at the scene.
11:13At this moment in time, the suspect is outstanding.
11:16So, the next steps are, sort the CCTV out, start with Civic
11:20and then work your way round the high street with all the shops around there
11:23to hopefully get an excellent facial of the suspect
11:27and also any images of the actual incident.

11:45DC's Callum Harbouron and Mark Davey begin by analysing CCTV.
11:51So, we've got the footage. Yeah.
11:54Cameras have captured the moments surrounding the stabbing.

11:59This is believed to be the suspect.
12:04We can see that there's some sort of altercation ongoing.

12:58This is half-past two in the afternoon on a Saturday,
13:01Scunthorpe High Street, town centre.
13:03You've got someone with scissors in their hand,
13:05willing to use them to stab someone in the neck.
13:07It's clearly a dangerous individual.
13:10It looks like one of his colleagues, one of the victim's colleagues,
13:13has got his hand up, applying pressure to...
13:16..to his neck to stem any bleed.
13:19You can see the suspect is just circling around.
13:21He's still there, he's not running away.
13:23It's cold, isn't it?
13:25Very calm, walking away. Yeah.
13:28For all he knows, he could have fatally injured that guy.
13:34This is probably the most serious offence
13:36we've had in our office this year.
13:40It appears to have been two people that have known each other
13:44and fallen out of maybe something trivial,
13:47but it's turned very violent.
13:52Our offenders used a bladed article, scissors in this case,
13:56to stab the guy in the neck.
13:59With a guy like this, the risk to the public is very high.
14:02All our efforts will be to get him in custody for public safety.
14:07We can't have someone using this kind of violence on our street.
14:13Detectives continue to examine the CCTV
14:16from the moments after the attack.
14:20So, the victim's gone off that way,
14:22and our suspect's circled right round and come back to the scene.

14:39He's then come out this alleyway. Is that him there?

14:44Same blue jeans, the black cap, now he's got a yellow jumper on.

14:49We've got West Street car park and we see him in the far distance.
14:52He's walked towards the high street.
14:54The next camera footage we have is him popping out of here.
14:57And he's still not running, is he? He's not running, he's walking.
15:00He's not running, he's not looking about.
15:02Police about, is anyone chasing him? No.
15:05Oh, there we go, look. He's going towards the newsagents.
15:09There's bound to be lots of cameras in there,
15:11so hopefully we'll get a good facial image.

15:18So, we've got him here, walk straight across.
15:21He'll walk around onto Froddenham Road, turn left,
15:25and then that's where we lose him.

15:30Having plotted the suspect's initial escape route after the attack,
15:34detectives head out to get a better image of his face.

15:42is getting a clear identification of who the suspect is.

16:27and this is where he had the big argument with the victim.
16:33The detectives first scope out the restaurant exterior
16:37for any CCTV cameras.
16:39Obviously, pointing out the camera at the top of here,
16:43we need that CCTV footage.
16:45And that's our main priority.
16:47I think from the business owner, that may take some time to get.
16:52Next, they retrace the suspect's movements through the town.

17:47He doesn't look worried, he doesn't look scared.
17:49He's not looking about to see if there's any police outside
17:52or if anyone's following him.

17:56We've got the footage from Civic,
17:58leaving the shop towards this direction
18:00and heading into the housing estate.

18:03The attacker has disappeared into the large residential areas
18:07to the west of Scunthorpe.
18:10Behind here is a housing estate
18:12where you've got dozens and dozens of roads, hundreds of houses.
18:17Police intensify their efforts to find the suspect.
18:23There's a unit that are going to be looking for the suspect.

18:28Police continue their efforts to find the suspect.
18:33There's a unit that are being tasked with
18:35see if they can find out where he is
18:38and then do some door-to-door.
18:41Our mission is to arrest him today.
18:46As the manhunt continues,
18:49back in CID,
18:51detectives have now received crucial eyewitness accounts.
18:54What's important about this statement
18:57is she's able to say that she knows the suspect.
19:00She knows him by name.
19:01She knows him as a guy called Viral Ion.
19:04It's a breakthrough.
19:06A bystander has given police the suspect's full name.
19:10Another key witness.
19:12We've got a written statement from her
19:14and, importantly, she heard what was said
19:17as well as she saw what happened.
19:20She writes,
19:21I got outside, I saw the victim standing near Viral's flat door.
19:24Viral was shouting at him, saying,
19:26I will hit you
19:27and holding a pair of scissors in his right hand.
19:29The scissors were around 10 to 12 inches long,
19:32black handles with thumb holes
19:34and silver one-inch thick blades.
19:38She said she's got between them
19:40and said to Viral to stop and pass me the scissors.
19:45She writes,
19:46As soon as I moved out of the way,
19:48Viral took the scissors,
19:49gripped in his right fist
19:51and stabbed him once between the ear and the shoulder
19:54on the neck.
19:56She gets quite graphic here,
19:57blood spurted from the victim's neck
19:59all over himself and the pavement
20:02and he put his hands up to his neck
20:05and that mirrors what we see on the CCTV as well.
20:09So this statement really puts some meat on the bones for me
20:12so I can see what's happened
20:14and what I thought was said between the two.
20:17I can confirm from this lady's statement
20:19that the suspect is upset with the victim.
20:23He said the words, I will hit you.
20:26It's a threat, a threat with the scissors.
20:31Detectives now need to verify
20:33the man named by witnesses
20:35is the attacker they tracked from the crime scene.
20:38So Viral Iron is the suspect we believe
20:40to be responsible for the stabbing.
20:42We've got an old custody picture
20:43when he was previously in custody.
20:46He's got records obtained from Interpol
20:49which show that he's got convictions
20:52in both Romania and Germany
20:54for what they call larceny,
20:56which is theft, dishonesty, offences.
21:00Obviously comparing the footage,
21:02the custody picture that we've got of him previously
21:04and the shop footage,
21:06just from the images you can quite clearly see
21:08it is the same fella.
21:12Massive step, the witnesses aren't wrong.
21:14And they've got the right person.
21:18With the attacker confirmed as Viral Iron,
21:21his details are circulated throughout Humberside Police Force.
21:25It's a great sort of investigation.
21:27We still need to get the footage
21:28from the actual restaurant itself,
21:30which I'm hoping to be a lot more clear
21:32and a lot more decisive of what's gone on.
21:34But we've got a suspect identified now.
21:37It's worrying because he's still on the streets.
21:39We haven't got him locked up yet.
21:41Arrest attempts are ongoing.
21:42But we've got someone who has stabbed someone in the neck
21:45in a public street on a Saturday afternoon
21:48with no care in the world.

21:57As the net closes in on the suspect,

26:21You know, I've seen some injuries over my years,
26:24but that's as shocking as you see.
26:28The doctors have briefed us that the blade, the scissors,
26:31has gone in and nicked an artery.

26:37lucky to be alive with an injury like that.
26:41In the interview, viral eye on the suspect,

27:19As an investigator, I'm open to have him tell me just the truth

27:37for that suspect to tell me his version of events,

28:06The interview is going to be about an arrest for attempt murder.
28:11A man on Saturday afternoon in Scunto was assaulted.

28:49They told him and confirmed that, yes, I have changed the lock
28:52and that because the key had somehow damaged the lock of the door.
29:06VRL Eon claims the victim had a duplicate key to the flat
29:10without his knowledge.
29:22And he said, I need to get into the flat to fix something.
29:31And I found that very weird.

30:19In that very moment, when I saw that scissor, I was so, so angry.

30:37I went after him and I said to him,

31:10and then I tried to punch him
31:13and by mistake I've caused that injury.
31:28We've started the first part of the interview process.
31:31He's given me an account, which puts him at the scene.

31:38He describes the victim wanting to get into his flat
31:42upstairs above the restaurant and he's not happy about that.
31:46He's also said that the victim fought with him first,
31:50that he's the one that's been punched in the face
31:53and that his instinctive reaction is to punch him back.

32:03that shows the incident in more detail.

34:03Is he intending on using them already?
34:05Looks like he's got a plan to use them, doesn't he? Yeah.
34:08If you look, the victim doesn't seem bothered by the suspect.
34:12Walking away from him, the suspect clearly doesn't like that.

34:17Whilst the attack is not covered by the restaurant cameras,
34:21detectives can use the street CCTV
34:24to challenge VRL Eon's claim that the stabbing was in self-defence.
34:29He still looks agitated. Face to face with him, isn't he? Yeah.
34:34The victim has assaulted the suspect first. Yeah, yeah.
34:37However, the suspect has got scissors
34:40and he's in the face of the victim.
34:43And I think the victim is more than in his own right... Yeah.
34:47..to get the suspect away from him.
34:49As the victim punches out towards VRL Eon,
34:53VRL Eon reaches around with his right hand
34:56to his right back pocket from his jeans,
34:58takes the scissors out,
35:00and I think that movement is a deliberate stab. Yeah.
35:03There. It's not a punching action, is it? No, it's not.
35:07He's clearly wanting to use them.
35:09It doesn't matter what anybody says, the camera doesn't lie.
35:12We've got it there. Yeah. That's exactly what's happened.
35:18VRL Eon said that he's the one that's been punched in the face
35:22by the victim and that his instinctive reaction is to punch him back.
35:27His account just doesn't quite stack up
35:29with what I know has happened from CCTV.
35:32He's armed himself with the scissors
35:34and motioned as though, I'm going to stab you with these,
35:37and it's coming for your neck.
35:39And this happened just 30 seconds before the actual stab itself.
35:43It's almost like a dry run.
35:46He knows where the scissors are that can reach for them
35:50and he's holding them in a position
35:54where he was intending to make a stab with them.
35:58With this evidence contradicting VRL Eon's self-defence account,
36:03how will he react when officers confront him with their breakthrough?
36:16In Scunthorpe, a man has been left with serious injuries
36:20after being stabbed in the neck with a pair of scissors.
36:25You know, I've seen some injuries over my years,
36:27but that's as shocking as you see.
36:29Suspect number one, VRL Eon, claimed the stabbing was accidental.
36:44But CCTV of the attack contradicts his account.

39:19She walked over and stood between you and...
39:25She said to you, pass me the scissors.
39:28Did she say to you, pass me the scissors?
39:34She's saying that you did not pass her the scissors.
39:41She's saying, as soon as I moved out of the way,
39:46VRL took the scissors back out of his pocket.
39:51And that you held the scissors gripped with your right fist.
39:55He stabbed him once between the ear and shoulder on the neck.

40:21But you see, I think, like that.

40:26At the point where he hits you,
40:29could you have stopped and walked away?

41:36During the interview, he's been challenged that this was a deliberate act.
41:40We know from a witness she begs for him to give these scissors up
41:44and to move away and stop what he's doing, and he continues.
41:48We can also see he has an opportunity to walk away
41:52when he's been punched in the face, but he doesn't do any of that.
41:56Do you know what's happening next?
41:58We need to go get a decision on the case.
42:01He knows he's in a lot of serious trouble for this
42:04and the consequences are extremely high for him.

42:11I would fully expect a charge, which is the next step.

42:22Detectives send their case to the CPS for a charging decision.
42:29And after a review of all our evidence and people's accounts, CCTV,
42:34we decided to present the case to the CPS
42:37as a Section 18 GBH, Grievous Bodily Harm,
42:40and compare that to attempt murder.
42:42The sentences, the penalty for our defendant, are going to be the same.

42:52With just 20 minutes remaining on his custody clock,
42:56VRL Eon receives the decision.
43:00You are charged with the following offences.
43:03On 6th April, Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire,
43:06you unlawfully and maliciously wounded...
43:10..with intent to do him grievous bodily harm
43:12contrary to Section 18 of the Offences Against the Persons Act, 1861.
43:16And the second charge is you had with you,
43:18without good reason or lawful authority,
43:20an article which had a blade or was sharply pointed,
43:23namely a pair of scissors contrary to Section 1391
43:26and 6 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1988.
43:31I think, for us, it's a positive outcome.
43:34This is a horrendous attack
43:36in the middle of a Saturday afternoon on the high street,
43:39and there's only one place for him, and that's prison.
43:42VRL Eon is remanded into custody to await trial.
43:46It takes VRL Eon off the streets, and he was our risk.
43:52There's justice for the victim.
43:54He suffered a horrendous injury, and he almost lost his life.
43:58By chance, he didn't.
