00:00You're in the hall seat now for some real serious offences.
00:03Quite interesting.
00:04Are you being accused of an armed robbery?
00:06When a criminal strikes...
00:08Money now! Don't put me down now!
00:10Listen to me!
00:11Do anything absolute to be a threat to life,
00:13you'll be shot, do you understand?
00:15..terrified victims deserve justice.
00:17To have something like this held to your throat,
00:20absolutely petrifying.
00:22It's innocent people going about their day-to-day lives.
00:25They didn't deserve this in the slightest.
00:28First, detectives must identify a suspect.
00:34This lad.
00:35And it's him.
00:36Suspect's quite prolific.
00:37I really need to get this guy in custody.
00:40Police!
00:41Drop to your knees!
00:42Do not move!
00:46Next...
00:47Police!
00:48..they must hunt for concrete evidence.
00:50It's like George and the Jungle, innit?
00:52That's him, innit?
00:53Ah, perfect!
00:54Then question the suspect face to face.
00:57This is your opportunity.
00:58If you're going to tell us something, then tell us it now.
01:01Did you put the knife to his throat?
01:02Absolutely not.
01:03What are we doing?
01:04Calm down.
01:05Get out of my way!
01:06Will the evidence stand or fall?
01:09That is that.
01:10That is that.
01:11Will the suspect confess or deny everything?
01:17Will the police uncover the truth in time?
01:2024 hours is a very limited period of time,
01:22so I'll carry out a full investigation.
01:24Because time is ticking and we've got eight hours left.
01:27The best way to safeguard the public is to have the suspect in custody
01:30and remand them to prison.
01:31Boom!
01:32All the charges.
01:33Yes!
01:40Police in Humberside
01:41serve almost a million people in their community.
01:45Police officer, we've changed it!
01:46Right, it's brought me time under arrest.
01:48Across the region, as in the rest of the UK,
01:51knife crime and offences involving weapons are on the rise.
01:55He appears to be struck with a crowbar.
01:56Oh, my God.
01:58Knife crime and offences with weapons ruins lives, it ruins families.
02:02We have a real focus around pursuing offenders in knife crime incidents
02:05with absolutely everything we've got.
02:07Tonight, we go inside the tactics used by CID...
02:11I bet they're absolutely petrified.
02:13Yeah.
02:14..in their fight against violent crime.
02:17When suspects commit attacks,
02:18our priority is to identify and apprehend them as soon as possible.
02:22This lad, and it's him.
02:24Somebody who's used a knife once
02:26often doesn't think twice about doing it again.
02:31It's Sunday evening,
02:33and police are alerted to an armed robbery in progress.
02:38Can I please look for the emergency?
02:40There's someone robbing the co-operative crossroads with an axe.
02:44He's gone in with his hood up and went behind with the axe.
02:49Can you grab the axe for us?
02:50Would you like me to clear that?
02:54He's just run off.
02:56He's got a light blue jacket on with his hood up.
03:01All right, so we've got some officers out.
03:03We're going to get straight to the co-op,
03:05and then we're going to do an area search of this man.
03:11With the suspect on the run...
03:13All right, cheers, thanks.
03:15I've got some footage. Do you want to see that?
03:18Yeah, of course.
03:20The case is escalated to CID officers
03:23Detective Constable Andy Taylor
03:25and Detective Sergeant Ryan Johnson.
03:28This is our suspect.
03:30Blue top, gloves on.
03:33Their priority is to identify the attacker.
03:37So, here he comes in. Yeah.
03:39We can get quite a good shot of the centre of his face there.
03:44I see him walking. Yeah.
03:46Straight away. Straight behind the counter?
03:48Straight behind the counter.
03:50He makes threats.
03:52Speaking to the staff, he's actually basically saying,
03:54I'll chop your hands off if you don't open the till.
03:56Right. So, I mean, you can see how scared he is.
03:58Yeah, yeah.
04:00I bet they're absolutely petrified.
04:02Yeah.
04:05He's loading his bag up with cash.
04:08He tells them to open the other till as well.
04:10Yeah. Blimey.
04:12Oh, wow. Make clear we're above head.
04:14Yep.
04:19Yeah, this bit here is where staff member actually disarms him.
04:23Yeah, and he chases him out with his own meat cleaver.
04:25Yeah. And he's gone?
04:27He's gone. Nothing's been taken.
04:29And the shopkeeper still keeps hold of the meat cleaver, yeah?
04:31Yeah. OK. Yeah.
04:33Wow.
04:35Do we know anything else whatsoever about the suspect at the minute?
04:38At the moment, unknown. OK.
04:40He appears to be on foot. Yeah.
04:42Our response cops are out on the ground at the moment.
04:44They're doing air researches.
04:46They've all been passed an image from the CCTV of the clothing.
04:50Again, quite distinctive.
04:52We'll get intel to do some digging around
04:54and see who's local in the area,
04:56who's been out and about.
04:58And if there's any intel to suggest anyone
05:00that wears a bright blue rainstyle jacket.
05:02OK.
05:04Let's start on a wider CCTV trail now.
05:06We need to see where he's come from
05:08and try and backtrack his movements as far as possible
05:11to see if we can link him to an address.
05:13Yes, go.
05:15When you're first alerted to a crime,
05:17we have what we call a golden hour,
05:19so it's around gathering as much evidence as we possibly can
05:22in that first 24 hours.
05:24We see lots of examples of suspects attempting to wash clothing
05:28or burn clothing or discard digital devices
05:30to try and hide their tracks.
05:32So we've got to get our hands on them as quickly as we possibly can
05:35to protect the public.
05:38The morning after the convenience store attack,
05:41there's been a breakthrough.
05:43Cheers, bye-bye.
05:47Our intel unit have done some digging around.
05:50They've pulled the name Joe Page.
05:53He lives close to the area,
05:55literally stone's throw from the offence location.
05:58From CCTV, we've seen that the suspect that leaves the shop,
06:02they run off in the same direction.
06:04There's been some previous jobs in that area as well,
06:06where he's been named.
06:08Joe Page is known to the police
06:11and has recently been released from prison on licence.
06:14The most recent conviction was in 2018.
06:17He was sentenced to ten years for an aggravated burglary.
06:20He only served part of that sentence,
06:23so he's currently out on licence.
06:25If he breaches the terms of his licence,
06:28Page could be sentenced to life in prison.
06:31If he breaches the terms of his licence,
06:34Page faces being sent straight back to prison.
06:39Officers are dispatched to his address to arrest him.
06:44They find him hiding in an unusual place.
06:51The attic.
06:55He's going to lock you up in a second, mate, to get you down.
06:58Yeah, we'll get you down with a fag, yeah.
07:01Get off me, get off me, put me down.
07:03I'll move you to the side where the ladder is.
07:05If you give it a rest, you're not going to get your head off, you muck.
07:08Right, you're under arrest for robberies.
07:10You'll have the same thing, but it may or may not be a question,
07:12so it'll lay out in court. Anything you do, say, may be given in evidence.
07:15It's necessary so we can conduct our searches and interview about it.
07:19Ha, game over for me now, innit?
07:22Babe!
07:24Babe, get me... Come now!
07:26Get me a bag and get me some fucking clothes cos I'm going to jail, man.
07:30Calm down, buddy, all right? I'm going to jail.
07:33Hey, mate. Hi, mate, police.
07:35Police have the power to search any address where a suspect is arrested
07:39to look for further evidence.
07:41Right, look at the weather, innit?
07:43Suspects think that they can make evidence disappear.
07:46Unfortunately for them, every contact leaves a trace.
07:49We'll find the evidence and we can start building
07:52a real strong evidential case.
07:55With suspected knifepoint robber Joe Page now in custody...
08:05..officers searching his house have found clues
08:08he has tried to destroy damning evidence in the hours after the attack.
08:12A burnt blue top has been located in the rear garden.
08:18Could these be the remains of the jacket
08:20the attacker was wearing the previous evening?
08:23There's your white card, there's your zip.
08:25If I was a betting man, I reckon it's going to be one of these.
08:29That is that.
08:31Inner lining, black and white lines.
08:34Cracking spot.
08:36So we can show that the inner lining is the same as that of the burnt clothing.
08:43Detectives believe the burnt jacket found in Joe Page's garden
08:47is the one worn by the attacker.
08:51But how will Page react
08:53when confronted with the damning evidence against him?
08:56He knows that if he's convicted for this,
08:59he's going to be seeing some significant jail time.
09:02So I imagine that when it comes to interviews,
09:05it will be quite difficult.
09:07DRAMATIC MUSIC
09:19Can you tell me where you were between 7 o'clock and 8 o'clock
09:23on the evening of the 22nd of October?
09:25No comment.
09:27Were you at the Lisa Starrs in Grimsby?
09:29No comment.
09:30Joe Page is accused of a terrifying knife point robbery
09:34in a local convenience store.
09:37Listen, what the fuck am I doing here, mate?
09:39Come on, be serious.
09:41It's not fucking me, that. No comment.
09:43That's not you? No. OK.
09:46With Page denying it's him,
09:48the detectives move on to the similarities
09:51between the jacket worn by the robber
09:53and the burned remains found in Page's garden.
09:56Have you ever seen this jacket before?
09:58No comment.
10:00We believe that we've located this jacket.
10:02What I'm interested in...
10:05..is these scorched marks and the blue material.
10:09That's the white zip.
10:11We suspect that there's a zip off that jacket.
10:17Blue image, striped pattern on the inside.
10:23See if there's what's inside that or not.
10:27That's the jacket, wasn't it?
10:29Can you burn that to try and get rid of the evidence?
10:31No comment.
10:35With Joe Page offering no explanation
10:38on this physical evidence,
10:40the Crown Prosecution Service authorised charges.
10:59Physical and forensic evidence
11:01has long been the cornerstone of any investigation,
11:04especially in violent crime involving knives.
11:07There's blood in both shoes.
11:09There's no disproving that. It's evidence.
11:12But in the digital age,
11:14video evidence is revolutionising the way detectives work.
11:18Ah, there we go.
11:20CCTV is invaluable.
11:22You might find that an offence or a crime is captured on CCT,
11:25if we're really, really fortunate.
11:27Sometimes you'll capture a suspect fleeing the scene
11:30or you might get clothing or vehicles or associates.
11:32That's him, isn't it?
11:34Gives you that glimpse as to what's happened in the immediate aftermath,
11:37which you'll only really get if you're actually at the scene yourself.
11:46In the early hours of the morning,
11:48police are called after an intruder armed with a knife
11:51broke into a victim's home.
11:53Police, what's your emergency?
11:55Hello, we've been robbed.
11:58The intruder broke inside our house with a long knife.
12:02He put the knife behind my roommate's back.
12:06He threatened us not to scream.
12:10So how long was the knife?
12:13About 40 centimetres.
12:15He took the phone from my roommate,
12:18so he said, I can give you mine, don't take the phone.
12:22Have you ever seen this male before?
12:24No.
12:25He was masked and he's wearing gloves.
12:29They're really scary, you know.
12:31And we're afraid the guy will come again, so we call you now.
12:37With a knife-wielding attacker at large,
12:40detectives need to move fast.
12:42DC Heather Butler has received video footage
12:45from a camera pointing at the back of the attacked address.
12:50This is about half past one in the morning.
12:53You can actually see through the window
12:55that there is someone cooking in the kitchen.
12:57They've got their back door open.
13:02And here he is.
13:04He's looking straight at this address here.
13:07Here he comes round.
13:11If you look here, they're completely unaware
13:13the aunt's turned around or anything.
13:16He goes into the house.
13:19He takes the phone and comes out.
13:22He's got the knife.
13:24You can see the victim and the witness
13:26who are coming out and pleading with him and talking with him.
13:29Phone's lit up. He's trying to walk away with it.
13:32And the victim is still pleading, trying to get his phone back.
13:40Really, really scary.
13:44DC Butler must now track the suspect's movements
13:47after the burglary.
13:51Here he is coming down. Now he's just come out the alleyway.
13:54Just looking really casual.
13:57Seems to be looking towards other houses.
13:59I think he does want to commit another crime.
14:02Then he just carries on walking off.
14:05So we've got him in the local area.
14:07We don't actually know who this guy is.
14:09We haven't got a facial shot good enough to identify him.
14:12So we're going to have to look for some better footage
14:15where we can get a close-up of his face.
14:17Shops are usually good in our local area
14:19and they usually have quite good CCTV,
14:21so we could maybe get something of him walking past.
14:25Police are able to gather video evidence from a range of sources.
14:29CCTV plays a real crucial role in investigations.
14:33It can often be the missing piece of the jigsaw in tracking a suspect.
14:39Wondering if it's possible to have a look at your CCTV.
14:42If we've got a real clear facial image of that offender committing an offence,
14:47that can secure us a successful prosecution.
14:53DC Butler is hoping local businesses near the scene of the attack
14:57will be able to help her identify the suspect.
15:02We'll look up there.
15:04We know the guy now, he's come down here,
15:06so hopefully these cameras will pick up his face.
15:10Hi. It's just Heather from the police.
15:13Having successfully tracked the suspect
15:15walking towards the shop,
15:17DC Butler needs this CCTV to be at the right angle
15:20to capture the suspect's face.
15:23Have a look from about ten past four and then we'll go from there.
15:31No, that's not him.
15:36This lad.
15:39And it's him.
15:40And it's him.
15:43Oh, brilliant.
15:47Oh, nice, yeah.
15:49CCTV has revealed the suspect's face.
15:54His image and description are circulated to units in the area.
15:58I'd be requesting our patrols to up their presence in that local area.
16:03If he was to come back or found that area as an easy target,
16:07we're going to have officers there.
16:11But as night falls, events take an extraordinary turn.
16:17Less than 24 hours after the first burglary,
16:20the same house is targeted again.
16:23But this time, it's two men who have broken in.
16:27Police, what's your emergency?
16:34Guys, have they got any weapons?
16:41Sending that as an emergency.
16:45The hunt is on for two suspects potentially armed with weapons.
16:54Less than 500 metres from the attacked address,
16:57police have stopped a man whose clothes and appearance
17:00match the description given by the victims.
17:03At the moment, you'll be in a spot for a sexual and pierce search.
17:07We'll be searching you for a knife.
17:09Because there was a knife used in the incident.
17:13Amongst the items reported stolen was a Canada goose jacket,
17:17similar to the one the suspect is currently wearing.
17:20Body-worn video is really, really invaluable for us.
17:23When we arrest a suspect, we'll demonstrate their demeanour,
17:26how aggressive or violent they are.
17:28I'm going to be searching you slowly, OK?
17:30Don't make any sudden movements.
17:32Also, what clothing they're wearing, whether they've changed
17:35their appearance from an earlier CCTV image or a witness's account,
17:38will be on the line when we get to an investigation.
17:40Keep your hand out of your pockets, yeah?
17:42No weapons are found on the suspect.
17:45At the moment, you're under arrest on suspicion of robbery.
17:51He's booked into Clough Road custody suite.
17:54He's on the road.
18:05But suspect number one was not acting alone.
18:08The victims gave a description of a second suspect,
18:11and a man matching that description was also detained,
18:14in close proximity to the attacked address.
18:18In a nutshell, I've broken into somewhere.
18:21I can't tell you how or what I did.
18:23I'm not telling you how.
18:25That's just the definition of what that difficult situation is.
18:29Now the suspects have been arrested,
18:31the custody clock countdown begins.
18:33The detectives have just 24 hours to obtain enough evidence
18:37to charge the suspects, or they'll be forced to release them.
18:42I've come in this morning to find out that the same address
18:46has been burgled again last night.
18:48This time it was with two people.
18:51The two suspects are Justine Monyaniza and Timothy Myers.
18:56There's been a lot more violence.
18:59More people have been in the house.
19:01They've been threatened.
19:03This time it was a meat cleaver.
19:05They've got a gun.
19:08They've grabbed hold of the victim.
19:10They've put their hand over their mouth
19:12and held the meat cleaver to his throat.
19:15They've made stabbing actions towards one of the victims,
19:19and they've also tried to prevent him from escaping.
19:22So it's got a lot more violent, a lot more serious,
19:26and it'll be a lot more traumatic to the two victims.
19:31As well as a Canada goose jacket,
19:34police have seized a beige hoodie Justine Monyaniza
19:37was wearing at the time of his arrest.
19:40DC Heather Butler compares this hoodie
19:43with the hoodie worn by the suspect seen in the CCTV
19:47of the first burglary.
19:49This camera angle is the back of the attacked addresses,
19:52and there's our guy.
19:54If she can show the hoodies are the same,
19:57it will put Monyaniza in the frame for both attacks.
20:00That's the same hoodie with the same writing, same colour.
20:04So that just confirms that he is our suspect
20:07that we wanted for the first burglary.
20:10With strong evidence now linking Monyaniza to both burglaries,
20:14how will he react when confronted in the interview room?
20:31Two innocent victims have been held at knifepoint
20:34and terrorised in their own home, twice in 24 hours.
20:38At the moment, you're under arrest on suspicion of robbery.
20:42Police have strong video evidence
20:44linking suspect number one, Justine Monyaniza, to both attacks.
20:48This camera angle is the back of the attacked addresses,
20:51and there's our guy.
20:54They bring him in for interview to confront him with the evidence.
20:58You've been arrested in relation to two offences of aggravated burglary.
21:02The detectives start questioning Monyaniza about the second burglary.
21:06Police have received a call saying that they've had two males enter the address,
21:12one being a black male, one being a white male.
21:15We did the black male.
21:19The victim does see that, black male.
21:22He grabs him, places him against the wall and puts the knife to his throat.
21:27Did you do that?
21:30He says this male continually hits him on the head with the handle of the knife,
21:34then walks him round the house, threatening with a knife.
21:37Did you do that?
21:39I can't remember.
21:41He says the male locates a Canada Goose jacket and puts the coat on.
21:48We know where that Canada Goose jacket is, don't we?
21:51Because she was arrested wearing it.
21:55Monyaniza is refusing to cooperate,
21:58but officers on the ground have sourced new incriminating CCTV from the second burglary.
22:03Will this lead to him explaining himself?
22:07You're seen at 2303 with Myers in the area.
22:142315 shows you climbing into an insecure window.
22:20So you go in first, yeah?
22:24Are you the lead in this mastermind of your own sort of thing?
22:29Because you open the door for charity, don't you?
22:32You let him in.
22:36You went back to that address because you did it the night before, didn't you?
22:43In the space of 24 hours, you've done it once,
22:48very little trouble, and then you've done it again.
22:52The second time round is when you're gone with Tim Myers,
22:55stolen a Canada Goose jacket, threatened him, knife at the throat.
22:59You've had to use a bit more violence this time, haven't you?
23:02You've gone there thinking, that's an easy touch, I'll do it again.
23:10Monyaniza has no comedy to everything.
23:12We've got him wearing a stolen jacket.
23:16Also, the same address was done less than 24 hours before.
23:21A male was fitting his description.
23:23If he's there with a knife and he's ordering them around
23:26and getting them to sit there and move there and move from one room to the next,
23:29you've got a false imprisonment.
23:31I can see big prison sentences, to be honest.
23:37Having built a strong case against Monyaniza,
23:40detectives turn their attention to his alleged accomplice
23:43for the second burglary, Timothy Myers.
23:47They're examining a witness video.
23:54Lots of witnesses now capture the offence
23:56or incident going on with a mobile phone.
24:02That can be really powerful,
24:04sometimes identifying things that we didn't know
24:06that help us open up other key lines of inquiry.
24:09This is Myers.
24:11The residents here are being really brave.
24:13They're trying to get him out of the house without any injury.
24:20So it's continued now.
24:22He's still trying to have an argument with them.
24:24He's not just not walking away, is he? No.
24:28You can see he's turning back.
24:30He's trying to be a bit aggressive. Yeah, he is.
24:32But, you know...
24:33He's a bit antagonistic, isn't he?
24:35And he goes back in, look. Yes, yeah.
24:40Yes, yes!
24:43It just shows him quite unsteady on his feet
24:46and a bit aggressive with them.
24:49We don't see any weapons, but he's clearly a bit antagonistic.
24:55Having reviewed the footage,
24:57detectives challenge Myers in the interview room.
25:00Right, prior to this interview,
25:02can you just confirm that you were shown two clips on the laptop?
25:07I was, yes. OK.
25:09And would you like to comment on those clips?
25:13Erm...
25:14I shouldn't have been there.
25:16I am sorry.
25:19Very sorry that the wrong thing happened.
25:22You do not scare me!
25:24Relax, relax!
25:26So there's clearly some verbose between the people in there,
25:30which is, I mean, your trespasser in there.
25:34Yeah, yeah.
25:40Go, go, go!
25:43Hey, I'm going! I'm going!
25:46It's just a natural reaction for them, isn't it?
25:48They just want you out, don't they?
25:51I can't say.
25:52I'm so sorry for everything.
25:58With compelling CCTV
26:00potentially showing Munyanazer carrying out the first burglary
26:05and strong video evidence of both suspects
26:07carrying out the second attack...
26:13..the Crown Prosecution Service authorised charges.
26:31Video evidence often proves decisive
26:34in bringing charges against armed intruders.
26:38So I'm just going to show you some CCTV.
26:40When you've got a suspect who thinks you've got no evidence,
26:43that they've got one up on you, there is nothing more compelling
26:46than having some CCTV evidence up your sleeve.
26:50What, it's you, that he was there?
26:52Yeah, it looks bad, doesn't it?
26:54Really, it gives you some satisfaction, doesn't it?
26:57Really, it gives you some satisfaction as an investigator
27:00to actually show them that and see their change in their face.
27:04Were you involved in it?
27:07Yes.
27:08You were? Yes.
27:12It's a bank holiday weekend
27:14and reports have come in to police of a huge brawl
27:17involving weapons rampaging through the streets.
27:21Police, what's your emergency?
27:24Hiya. We're closing up but we've got a really bad fight
27:27outside with customers.
27:30How many people are involved?
27:32There's about 20 out here at the moment.
27:35We've watched a group get some weapons
27:37and now they're heading towards the riverhead.
27:41SIREN BLARES
27:51Police, what's your emergency?
27:54Hiya. We've just had six lads run round to the front of Fusion
27:58on Victoria Street with weapons, crowbars, spades or guns.
28:05One of them hit this lad with a crowbar.
28:09We shot doors immediately.
28:11Five of us went out behind with weapons.
28:15Did the person that was hit with the crowbar look like they need an ambulance?
28:18One of them definitely did, yeah.
28:25Just as you head up, we've got three patrols en route at the moment.
28:28With both callers reporting weapons being used,
28:31officers race to the town centre.
28:34They immediately pursue a group of men seen running away.
28:39You're under arrest on suspicion of GBHRA.
28:41There's been an incident and you've been seen running
28:43as police have turned up.
28:45Three suspects are caught and arrested.
28:49Just sit there.
28:51Step in and, Montreux, put it in.
28:53Take a seat just there for us, please.
28:55But a number of others, including the man with the crowbar,
28:58have made their escape.
29:01I've got a potential scene on New Street.
29:03There's a pool of blood near the ambulance.
29:07Three victims of the attack are being treated for their injuries.
29:12What have you been hit with?
29:14He went through me with a crowbar.
29:16It took a big gash on the arm.
29:18It's got a hole in his head.
29:20Like a crowbar hole.
29:22I've been hit with a head injury.
29:24The other ones are stable, but they're all covering fire.
29:27We need to get to Port Sharpish.
29:29Right.
29:31Whilst the victims are rushed to hospital,
29:33with one in critical condition from a head wound,
29:36the three arrested men are brought into custody.
29:40Hello again, Sarge.
29:42What's your name?
29:44The other two suspects are named Madeleine Illier
29:48and Marion Vasilake.
29:51Before summoning the suspects for interview,
29:54Detective Superintendent Nicky Burnett
29:57and Detective Inspector Scott Miller
29:59begin by confirming the three men in custody
30:02were involved in the attack.
30:06They compare clothing worn by the arrested suspects
30:09to clothing seen in the CCTV footage.
30:14The three men are shown in the CCTV footage
30:17Dark shoulder jacket is going to be Madeleine Illier.
30:22So I've got him swinging a spade.
30:26I believe this chap here is Marion Vasilake.
30:30That's him upon arrest.
30:32You can see him in his light-coloured or grey-coloured hooded top.
30:36Is that Meryl Coff?
30:38Burgundy jacket.
30:40Yes, with the moustache.
30:42Yeah, he can be clearly seen to be throwing punches
30:44in the direction of people.
30:47With strong evidence, all three men are involved in the incident.
30:52They will each be interviewed to get their account of the attack.
30:56When we're interviewing a suspect,
30:58we'll always withhold some information.
31:00So, for example, if we've got CCTV
31:02that quite clearly shows them at the scene,
31:04if they say they're 20 or 30 miles away,
31:06then already we've caught them in a lie
31:08and then we can start to build on that
31:10to test the truthfulness of an account.
31:12Can you give me your full name, please?
31:14Can you give me your full name, please?
31:18OK, so, you've been arrested for an assault.
31:21Tell me what happened.
31:25What was your involvement in this incident?
31:31I'm going to show you some CCTV.
31:37Does that look familiar?
31:40Do you identify anyone in that CCTV?
31:46Following a no-comment interview for Madeline Elie,
31:49detectives next bring in Marion Vasilake for questioning.
31:53We're going to show you this.
31:55I want you to watch it.
32:10So, the other ones used the metal bar.
32:23Mirel Kov is the final suspect to be interviewed.
32:26In here.
32:28Will he admit his involvement in the attack?
32:31OK, so, we are now recording.
32:33You were arrested for an assault.
32:36Tell me about it.
32:40I don't have anything to do with it.
32:42I don't know what the conflict was between them.
32:45They speak English and English.
32:47They got into a conflict out there
32:49and I left with my girlfriend.
32:51From leaving that first bar to being arrested,
32:54has he seen any other conflict?
32:56No, absolutely not.
32:59After denying he was involved,
33:01Mirel Kov is then challenged with the CCTV evidence.
33:06I'm just going to show you a video.
33:19OK, now that's paused.
33:21You can see a bit clearer.
33:23Can you see anyone in that CCTV footage that you can identify?
33:29OK, which one is you?
33:31That.
33:33This one, yeah.
33:34OK.
33:42I can't find him.
33:56So, as they got into the tent,
33:58it seemed like I walked into the wolf's mouth.
34:03I don't know.
34:05I don't know.
34:07I don't know.
34:09I don't know.
34:11I don't know.
34:13I don't know.
34:16Mirel Kov has admitted his involvement.
34:19But will he go further?
34:23Name?
34:25Is it this person?
34:27The nurse.
34:30This one here.
34:32Do you know his surname?
34:36It's a huge breakthrough.
34:38Police now have the names of some of the outstanding suspects,
34:42including a nickname, Hadi, for the man with the crowbar.
34:55Armed with this new information,
34:57detectives begin to investigate
34:59the identities of the outstanding suspects.
35:02But where are they?
35:17A violent street brawl has left one man in critical condition
35:21with serious head wounds.
35:25Three attackers were arrested at the scene,
35:27but a number of suspects, including the man with the crowbar,
35:30made their escape.
35:33Police are now working to identify the remaining suspects.
35:46Investigations into addresses linked to the three men in custody,
35:50along with the names they provided in interview,
35:53have given detectives a new lead.
35:55So we strongly suspect now
35:57that a large proportion of our suspects reside at the same property.
36:00We know a phone call was made by Mirel Kov to an associate at that property,
36:05so we're carrying out further arrest attempts at that location.
36:16Police officer, we're changing!
36:18Stay where you are! Stay there!
36:20Inside the property...
36:22Don't see him now. Don't search. Don't search.
36:24Police find two men...
36:28..who were both arrested
36:30and brought back to Birching Way Police Station.
36:46In custody, Michal Kedanut and Vasile Kov are kept separate.
36:52Separating multiple suspects before an interview is crucial.
36:55We don't want people being able to corroborate their own accounts,
36:59come up with the same stories.
37:01We want to hear their version of events,
37:03not something that's scripted between a number of them.
37:06Vasile Kov is the first in for interview.
37:09Will he admit his part in the attack
37:12or help detectives identify the man with the crowbar?
37:16He was arrested on suspicion of GDH
37:19and also on suspicion of violent disorder.
37:44Vasile Kov is refusing to give an account.
37:47Will Michal Kedanut provide any more information?
38:17Kedanut has given the full first name of the man with the crowbar, Adeline.
38:41It's a bombshell for the detectives.
38:43Their main suspect is about to flee the country.
38:46We need to get this individual before he jumps on a plane.
38:49The clock's ticking now.
38:51If he were to leave the country, it would be very difficult,
38:53you know, to locate him and bring him back again.
38:56Face justice.
38:59Kedanut has told police an address recently used by Adeline.
39:07Officers enter the property.
39:11Clear.
39:13Clear.
39:15But it's empty.
39:17Are they too late?
39:19Has he fled the UK?
39:27With time running out,
39:29detectives at Birching Way Police Station
39:31urgently investigate any other addresses he may be linked to.
39:35Can I just take your name, please?
39:38Can you spell that for me?
39:40Can you spell that for me?
39:46Officers at the property search for any clothing he was wearing on the night.
40:11We've come down here, one, for an arrest attempt for the outstanding suspect,
40:14but also to see if there's any items related to the offence.
40:17We've found what we believe to be the clothing that the suspect was wearing
40:20whilst, then, he was believed to be involved in the assault which took place yesterday night.
40:30Back at Birching Way Police Station, there's been a major development.
40:35Is it Adeline?
40:36Adeline?
40:37Have you ever been arrested before?
40:39After new intelligence identified the address of an associate,
40:43plainclothes officers have arrested their main suspect.
40:46I'm authorising your detention here at Birching Way Police Station
40:50to obtain evidence by way of questioning.
40:52So what that means is you need to be interviewed in relation to that allegation
40:56to see whether you know anything about that incident, OK?
41:01He's taken for interview.
41:04But what will he say about the assault?
41:08OK, we are now recording.
41:10Can you give me your full name?
41:16You've been arrested for an assault that happened yesterday morning
41:20in the early hours in Grimsby Tower Centre.
41:24We're just going to show you some video footage now.
41:27VIDEO PLAYS
41:35Did you see yourself on that CCTV?
41:40Yes.
41:41And what did you see yourself doing on that CCTV?
41:58You don't say you have the intention of injuring or harassing,
42:01but hitting with a metal bar.
42:07I think when suspects are caught out, it's quite often in an interview
42:10you'll find, in violent crime in particular,
42:12where they get to a point of desperation, ultimately,
42:15where they know that the game is up, if you like,
42:17but they're still trying to find a way out of that.
42:27What changed?
42:28Why did you go from scaring to actually hitting?
42:37So, as I'm looking at the CCTV here,
42:40I'm already counting four swings with this metal pole
42:44towards one of the victims.
42:47You're saying you've only hit him twice?
42:50I want that I hit him only twice.
42:55I think that I hit him when I punched him.
43:07This young man's not well enough to give a statement to us just yet.
43:12What's that?
43:14You know what I'm saying?
43:21So, you've said you've gone there to scare him.
43:25But the CCTV shows that you hit one of them
43:28as soon as you've come round the corner.
43:30So, how are you meant to scare someone
43:32if your actions go straight in, let's go and assault him?
43:39I don't have any more questions.
43:41OK.
43:44It's a result for detectives.
43:47The confession of their suspect number one.
43:50We've managed to identify all of the suspects.
43:56We need to put this case to CPS and hopefully secure the charges.
44:02Because it's really important that we get these people taken off our streets.
44:13CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY
44:39Knife crime and the offences with weapons remains a priority for us.
44:42There are some really dangerous people out there.
44:44But investigators are motivated, they're tenacious,
44:46that's what they get out of bed for.
44:48And that's all about pursuing suspects
44:50and making communities and the public safe.
45:12CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY
