In House floor remarks on Thursday, Speaker Johnson touted the Big Beautiful Bill.
Transcript
00:00Our speaker, the Speaker of the House, Mr. Mike Johnson.
00:10The gentleman from Louisiana, the Speaker of the House, is recognized for one minute.
00:17After that very long and wandering speech, my friend, and after a long week and a long
00:21night and countless hours of work over the past year, a lot of prayer and a lot of teamwork,
00:28my friends, it quite literally is again, morning in America, isn't it?
00:34All right.
00:36And after four long years of President Biden's failures, President Trump's America First agenda
00:42is finally here, and we are advancing that today.
00:45What we're going to do here this morning is truly historic, and it will make all the difference
00:50in the daily lives of hardworking Americans.
00:53The Dallas waitress pulling overtime, the Detroit mom counting bills late at night, the Kentucky
00:59coal miner waiting on his second chance.
01:03These are the forgotten men and women of our country that we are all called here to serve,
01:08and the one big beautiful bill will deliver for those people.
01:12It revives our economy.
01:14It will deliver historic tax relief.
01:16It will make the largest investment in our border security in a generation.
01:21It will unleash affordable American energy again, restore common sense to government, secure
01:28generational savings, and strengthen our national defense while it also strengthens our essential
01:35programs like Medicaid for the people who need it the most.
01:40That's what we're doing with the one big beautiful bill.
01:42To put it simply, this bill gets Americans back to winning again, and it's been a long
01:48time coming.
01:49This one big beautiful bill is the most consequential legislation that any party has ever passed,
01:56certainly under a majority this thin.
01:59Legislation of this magnitude is truly nation-shaping and life-changing.
02:03It's the kind of transformational change that future generations will study one day.
02:07They'll look back at this day as a turning point in American history, and it's exactly
02:14what we were sent here to do.
02:16Let the record show that when the House Democrats vote in a few moments, this is what they'll
02:22be voting for.
02:23Their vote will show that they are apparently for the largest tax increase in the history
02:30of our country.
02:31They will be voting for, when they vote against this bill, waste, fraud, and abuse.
02:36They will be voting against safer communities, American energy dominance, and American strength
02:42on the world stage.
02:44Today wouldn't be possible without the leadership of arguably the most powerful and the most successful
02:51president in the modern era of the United States.
03:05Our Democrat colleagues mock the objective truth.
03:09We were delivered unified government, my friends, in November.
03:12The White House, the Senate, and the House were delivered to the party on this side of the
03:16aisle.
03:17You can clap all you want, all right?
03:23None of this would be possible without the leadership of the 45th and the 47th president
03:27of the United States, Donald J. Trump, and it would not be possible without the really
03:31hard work of the men and women on this side of the aisle.
03:35I just want to name our chairman of the House committees that produced and did all the hard
03:39work to produce the big, beautiful bill.
03:43The legislature says we give honor where honor is due, Mr. Leader, and we're going to do
03:48that here quickly.
03:49Chairman G.T.
03:50Thompson of the Agriculture Committee.
03:52Chairman Mike Rogers of the Armed Services Committee.
03:55Chairman Jody Arrington of the Budget Committee.
03:57Chairman Tim Walberg, Education and Workforce Committee.
04:01Chairman Brett Guthrie, Energy and Commerce Committee.
04:04Chairman French Hill, Financial Services Committee.
04:06Chairman Mark Green, Homeland Security Committee.
04:09Chairman Jim Jordan, Judiciary Committee.
04:12Chairman Bruce Westerman, Natural Resources Committee.
04:15Chairman James Comer, Oversight and Accountability Committee.
04:18Chairman Sam Graves, Transportation and Infrastructure.
04:22Chairman Jason Smith, Ways and Means Committee.
04:25And I want to make special mention of Chairwoman Virginia Fox of the Rules Committee, who by my
04:30count sat in that chair and led that Rules Committee for almost, it seemed like two straight
04:36days and I think she took two short breaks.
04:39She's the Iron Lady of the House and I'm so grateful for all their hard work.
04:46See, the beauty of what we produce with the one big, beautiful bill over here is that this
04:53was a team effort.
04:55This was men and women who were elected to come here.
04:58The duly elected representatives of the people back home.
05:01They rolled up their sleeves.
05:02They got down in the trenches.
05:03We began this effort over a year ago.
05:06It was actually March of last year because we anticipated and we believed that we would
05:10be delivered unified government.
05:12That we would have a Republican leader in the White House, Donald J. Trump.
05:16That we would have the Senate in the House.
05:18That we would have that moment of opportunity.
05:20So, we planned and we worked and we locked arms together as a team and we have delivered
05:27this against all odds.
05:28The media has tried to divide us.
05:30They've written our eulogy about ten times.
05:33And you know what?
05:34Sometimes it's good to be underestimated, isn't it?
05:36But we got this done and I'm so proud of the work of every member of this House Republican
05:41Conference who worked in their committees.
05:43Every single member had a say in this.
05:45Every single constituent, the millions of people that are represented here have their voices
05:51and their interests reflected because we did this together as a team.
05:55And it's quite an achievement.
05:56I just want to say that all that tireless work has led to the hard work of crafting this
06:01legislation and we've been ready since day one to deliver on this agenda.
06:06Unified control of government is a rare mandate.
06:08It doesn't happen very often.
06:10It's happened just three times for our party in the last half century.
06:13We do not take it for granted and we are delivering on that mandate here today.
06:17The American people gave us a mandate in November.
06:20They sent a message with their vote.
06:22They gave this side of the aisle the power and we're going to use it to make their lives
06:26better.
06:27What we're achieving here today is nothing short of historic and that's true.
06:31House Republicans are getting it done again.
06:36In the Republican Party, see, we believe in a simple principle.
06:40We believe that America really is a shining city on a hill.
06:43Ronald Reagan used to talk about that.
06:45He was referencing scripture.
06:47He understood that America is exceptional.
06:50He understood that, as it says right there above the speaker's rostrum, our national motto
06:55that we trust in God.
06:57In God is our trust.
06:59These are the things that make our nation exceptional and the people of our country, they deserve.
07:04They deserve better.
07:06We've been working hard to deliver so that the people of our country see this again as
07:11a shining city on a hill and that people around the world see us for who we should be.
07:16One thing that we can all agree on on both sides of the aisle is that a strong America
07:20is good for everybody all around the world.
07:23All of us together, regardless of party, we're called here to stand together and defend those
07:27freedoms and to defend those foundations that made us the greatest nation in the history
07:32of the world.
07:33All of us have to look and recognize that the shine has not been on that city in a while.
07:39We're here to restore it.
07:41And this piece of legislation, as large as it is and as historic as it is, will do that
07:46very thing.
07:47Now look, we're accomplishing a big thing here today, but we know this isn't the end
07:51of the road just yet.
07:52We've been working closely with Leader Thune and our Senate colleagues, the Senate Republicans,
07:57to get this done and delivered to the President's desk by our Independence Day, that's July 4th.
08:03Today proves that we can do that and we will do that.
08:07And it doesn't matter how much the media doubts us or how much the Democrats, you know, give
08:12us their narratives.
08:13It doesn't matter how long the speeches are, it doesn't change the facts.
08:17We're delivering and we're doing it in a big way.
08:20So to our friends in the Senate, I would just say the President is waiting with his pen.
08:25The American people are waiting for this relief.
08:27They are waiting for these life-changing results, and we are going to finish this job.
08:33This is a historic moment that we will be talking to our children and our grandchildren about,
08:38and everyone will remember, America's back.
08:41I yield back.
