At today's House Republican leadership press briefing, Speaker Johnson was asked how he'd sell his Big Beautiful Bill to House Republican hardliners.
Transcript
00:00Considering how much this bill has changed in the Senate, how are you going to be able to pivot and sell your members on a vastly different product so quickly to go forward?
00:11Characterize what that's going to be like. The President says you need to be here this weekend.
00:15Are you going to keep members here without anything to vote on with no clarity on when the Senate's going to send that across?
00:20Yeah, first thing first, I don't think we can say it's a vastly different product. Don't prejudge it yet.
00:25We're still awaiting the final details. We've given space for the Senate to work.
00:29They're a separate chamber, of course. I've been emphasizing from the very beginning.
00:32This is a one-team approach. The House and Senate Republicans working together in tandem with the White House.
00:37There's no daylight between any of us on the ultimate goal and objective.
00:40When we set what you all thought were audacious deadlines in the early part of the year,
00:45and I said we would do our bill by Memorial Day, many of you smirked.
00:49I saw your face as you laughed at me when I said that, but we beat it by four days, okay?
00:53When we said we would get the whole thing to the President's desk by July 4th, and that was our objective,
00:57many of you also rolled your eyes, but we are on target right now to do that very thing.
01:03So if the Senate acts accordingly, and they act according to what we expect right now,
01:08we work out the final details.
01:11They would get that passed maybe by Friday, Saturday.
01:15And I've told our members, we just had the big House Republican conference meeting, the weekly meeting,
01:19and I said keep your schedules flexible.
01:21July 4th is always a district work period, as is tradition, so everybody can go home and celebrate the 4th of July
01:26with their constituents and their families.
01:29But there's nothing more important that we should be involved in and can be involved in
01:32than getting the one big, beautiful bill to the President's desk.
01:35So if the Senate does its work on the timeline that we expect, we will do our work as well.
01:39Thank you very much.
