00:00As artificial intelligence becomes more integrated into military systems, ASEAN member states are urged to take AI-related defense threats more seriously, particularly amid escalating regional tensions.

00:15Faisal Abdulrahman, a research fellow at Singapore's S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, said tensions in the South China Sea, particularly between China and the Philippines, have already seen the use of AI-driven propaganda.

00:30He said this is a key feature of emerging cognitive warfare, which targets human perception to shape outcomes without traditional military force, adding that this would be a tactic that climate countries need to prepare for.

00:44Prompted by its importance as a strategic shipping lane and resource-rich zone, the South China Sea has been the subject of overlapping territorial claims by China, as well as the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan.

00:57ASEAN nations like Indonesia and Vietnam are already advancing AI-driven defense technologies, while Malaysia has flagged key risks such as miscalculation, overdependence, and the potential for unintended conflict escalation.

01:12However, Faisal noted that while ASEAN nations may incorporate AI-related guidelines into their military modernization efforts, it remains uncertain whether they would accept restrictions that could limit their strategic options in the South China Sea.

01:27He said rules and norms are more effective when there is a strong level of trust between disputing countries.
