00:00So are you reserving judgment until that?
00:04Reserving judgment on what?
00:05Like, do you think without knowing whether it's two or three years,
00:09is this a good deal for the Niners?
00:12Well, the initial indication suggests it's a good deal for both sides.
00:17This is the guy who was the last pick in the draft.
00:20He was never expected to get a second contract as anything other than a backup.
00:24So for him to end up with $53 million per year in new money,
00:27$45 million on the six-year deal,
00:29I was saying a few weeks ago the Kirk Cousins contract makes sense for Brock Purdy.
00:34And what's Cousins' deal worth?
00:36$45 million per year at signing.
00:38He signed it as a free agent.
00:39How much was fully guaranteed at signing?
00:41$100 million as a practical matter.
00:44It was $90 million, but there's another $10 million that kicked in earlier this year.
00:47The Falcons let it kick in.
00:49They're paying him $100 million fully guaranteed.
00:51And I've seen some suggest that the full guarantee for Purdy is $100 million.
00:56So I think it's a win-win.
00:58The reality is going to be, does Purdy keep playing well?
01:03If he does, you're going to see that average dip farther and farther down the stack.
01:09And if he doesn't, then you start looking at the deal and figuring out where the breaking point is.
01:16That's why that Deshaun Watson contract with the Browns is such an albatross and an outlier.
01:21When you commit to five years, five years fully guaranteed, nobody does that.
01:26Five years fully, and nobody's ever going to do it again after what happened with Watson.
01:28If the player doesn't deliver, you're stuck.
01:32So that's why the true commitment is so critical because the team needs to have the flexibility to say, you know what?
01:40This hasn't worked the way we thought.
01:42And when you're a top five guy, a true top five guy, Burrow, Allen, Jackson, Mahomes, et cetera, it never happens.
01:49Once you've made it clear you're one of the best of the best, you don't suddenly wake up one day and you can't play anymore.
01:57And it makes it safer to do a long-term deal with a player like that because he's proven that he's great and that's not going to change.
02:05With Purdy, I still think we have to see how this all plays out.
02:09Look at how they played last year with all the injuries and everything.
02:12We've seen plenty of quarterbacks out there, great quarterbacks who have overcome that and taken the team to the playoffs.
02:17The record down the stretch last year was not good.
02:19So I think that we've yet to know how it's going to break, how his career is going to break.
02:25But I think there are indications in the contract based upon what we've seen so far.
02:29And I don't think it was an accident that this thing got leaked at 5 o'clock Eastern time on a Friday.
02:33That's where bad news goes to die, not good news goes to thrive.
02:36I think when we start digging into this thing, we're going to realize, hey, you know what?
02:40As quarterback contracts go, this is pretty good for the 49ers.
02:43It gives them protection.
02:44It gives them flexibility.
02:45And it forces Purdy to keep proving he can play at a high level.
