00:00and sam brings it up before he you know leaves the studio he's like all right so i hear you it's a lot
00:04of money but like what was the alternative what was the alternative right and just this is just
00:09me in life right there are times where a desperation move works in your favor like the
00:14jimmy butler trade just happened it felt if we're taking a step back the warriors felt very vulnerable
00:21and desperate and they swung big and although they didn't accomplish the ultimate prize it ended up
00:26being a really good move so i didn't mean to cut you off there they said it was they were desperate
00:30right they said as much they told us they were desperate yeah and so like just my algorithm in
00:35life from learning from my uncle and my dad and people that i trust like when you make moves out
00:40of desperation very rarely are they successful and i'm not saying that the niners were in this
00:47desperate bleak situation that's not what i'm saying it's just but when i hear people say that
00:52what's the alternative well the alternative um you know is up to the team to kind of figure out
00:58like that's what these guys get paid big money um not that matt jones was the alternative or drafting
01:04someone and replacing him immediately but i just see that these teams that when they make moves out
01:08of desperation a lot of times they don't work out the atlanta falcons had a huge gaping hole at
01:14quarterback a couple of years ago coming off of a big time injury kirk cousins was available they were
01:20desperate okay much more desperate than where the niners are at and and they gave a lot of money
01:26to kirk cousins and almost immediately regretted it correct yeah okay the niners themselves just last
01:32year when they went through the whole brandon iuk situation it felt very desperate hey we've got to
01:38cling to our super bowl chances and instead of being pragmatic and logical about it on the front end of
01:43negotiations they let it drag and drag and drag and then it became very desperate and they almost
01:49immediately regretted it um and you know now in this situation they got it done in may so that's
01:56like that's that's good i am happy they got it drama free offseason and look i will be the first to
02:01admit i'm all over the place on this one i have a lot of mixed emotions i want brock to be the
02:06quarterback heading into this year right i do i definitely do but he's a guy like a lot of guys in
02:12the league and i'm gonna rattle off the names we're like i just oh it's a lot of money and i and i and i
02:18i wince at the amount of money that that he gets because i understand as i surround this player with
02:24talent and as i try to fill these holes because there are tons of holes it just becomes really
02:29hard doesn't mean you can't do it it's just this this type of a deal when i hear well what's the
02:35alternative oh that feels desperate when you say that and i remember when they were desperate and
02:41looking for jimmy garoppolo and it ended up being a good deal you think this was a desperation
02:46contract i because i don't feel like that at all not not even close brock pretty's a really good
02:52quarterback but when you tell me but when you tell me like the old jimmy garoppolo when they signed
02:57him initially after like six games that was a desperate contract like we just need to start in
03:01quarterback let's assign this guy he didn't know anything about jimmy garoppolo then you thought
03:05you might see something bonte was here all that allows him he's like i saw when he when he yelled
03:10at those wide receivers to get back in line i knew we had a franchise i was like six games six games
03:16but that's how desperate we were that exactly see i don't feel like this is desperation i feel like we
03:20know who brock pretty is for the most part as a quarterback he's shown us enough at this point
03:24he's a pretty good quarterback is he great he's shown he's shown greatness at points he was like you
03:30don't become an mvp candidate but but you just can't have a season like that and be a scrub i'm
03:36sorry you just can't he's a very very good who has moments of great uh greatness as a quarterback
03:41for me for me anyway jared goff had an mvp like year last year he was spectacular right right and and
03:48i admit like that guy deserves a lot of money what's detroit's alternative what are they going to draft
03:53somebody like i understand that but like when you say well then you got to pay them whatever they want
03:57it's like all right well there's got to be a happy medium here and i just i just think the
04:00quarterback money is all over the place and a lot of these deals make me wince herbert right i don't
04:07love paying herbert like i don't i don't know i understand what are the chargers going to do
04:11like what are they really going to do like i i acknowledge that well it's for that he's so
04:14interesting too because i guess you would you because you asked the question before the show
04:18what other team out there relies more on a non-quarterback on their offense than the 49ers do
04:26with christian mccaffrey right i'd say the chargers sneakily not that it's one player who they don't
04:31rely on herbert's arm as much they don't rely on his arm they run the ball you know harbaugh you know
04:36what he's gonna do you have you have the howitzer for an arm and justin herbert but we're not throwing
04:40it left and right if anything we're gonna do deacon dunks to lad mcconkey right that's what he did last
04:45year so i mean so that's an interesting one you say justin herbert because i do kind of liken him to
04:50brock purdy in that respect where he's not asked to do everything and people pick him apart for that
04:55it's not his fault he just runs the offense the way it's supposed to be catered to and i think he
04:59got a little bit herbert for me got exposed a little bit in the playoffs now it was his first
05:02ever like or second i guess uh playoff game other than that collapse against jacksonville a couple
05:06years ago brandon staley but he looked bad against the houston texas he looked bad i have yet to see
05:11brock purdy look awful like and i mean god awful the baltimore ravens game a playoff game okay and that's
05:18the back of my mind still that's an important question i know when he's under pressure i'm admitting i don't
05:23love the herbert contract again i'm not saying i'm not sitting here and saying that i wouldn't
05:27have signed i would have signed him sure i'm acknowledging that there's a ton of risk here
05:30yes and this isn't the slam dunk celebration that everyone wants to make it out to be i'm not trying
05:35to rain on people's parade i'm giving you how i feel as a niner fan i like brock a lot i want him
05:40to quarterback my team but there's a lot of guys in the league that have gotten a lot of money and i'm
05:45like oh like okay i gave you herbert um give me sam darnold how about that he just signed a fat
05:51fat contract one year one and a half year deal okay but i don't give i wouldn't have been
05:56comfortable for giving sam donald that money i wouldn't have been comfortable giving geno smith
06:00that money there you go i wouldn't have been comfortable giving trevor lawrence money at all
06:05i wouldn't have been comfortable giving to attack of aloa that kind of money there are a lot of
06:09dac prescott i despise that deal like i despise that deal now i think brock is as good if not better
06:15than almost all those guys i mentioned right and so you're you're in a really tricky spot here like i i get
06:21this this is the the cost of doing business at the position i i acknowledge that but i also remember
06:27the cost of doing business at the defensive tackle position because you're desperate to be able to
06:33bring someone in was javon hargraves 50 million dollars and that didn't work out real well you know
06:37the cost of doing business to retain debo samuel was a lot of guaranteed money we saw the best of
06:43them and it didn't work out well and i supported that deal um i could go right down the list and name
06:49a lot of different deals that i was ready to throw a ticker taper parade the day that they signed him
06:53nick bosa trent williams cmc extension and a lot of them have blown up in their face all i'm saying
07:00is that i'm happy for brock i like him as the quarterback i love that the niners themselves
07:06have invested in him and shown that faith in him but it's a lot of money that's all i'm saying guys and
07:12i know you're saying so what no so what i want the team to win we are waiting 30 plus years to win
07:18a super bowl all right he needs an offensive line around him he needs a true wide receiver one right
07:24maybe less so on this team than others because they're a run first team please to god could
07:29kirsten mccaffrey be healthy who is the off-ball linebacker alongside fred warner who is the defensive
07:35line alongside nick bosa who's playing safety with malik mustafa on the shelf i have so many
07:42questions about this team so it's a great day for the quarterback i'm happy for niner fans that
07:47they're pumped that they got their guy i want to win a super bowl and teams win super bowls they do
07:53and so as you ask that question are they more confident now that brock's in the fold they can
07:58win a soda not much has changed like i got the same question marks and then i haven't even gotten to
08:04health which every quarterback is subject to it but this guy in particular hit his elbow at the
08:10end of the year and that terrified me it just terrified me brought to you by golden state serving
08:16the barrier for three generations when you succeed we succeed visit goldenstatedlumber.com by the way
08:20mike florio pro football talk nbc sports joining us at 8 30 courtesy of the river islands guest line
08:25cannot wait to talk to mike about this contract what it means for the 49ers for brock birdie for the
08:29future who are they bidding against were they not bidding against all of that baking the equation
08:33with mike florio at 8 30 in the meantime like like like right now if you're gonna pay a guy and
08:39just just real quick you're gonna pay a guy let's just say it's 45 or 53 i've seen the numbers all
08:43over the place and look we all love 45 more than 53 we admit that we got to protect this guy you got
08:49to protect this guy to maximize your return on them and they just they just refuse to protect them
08:55that's not brought yeah that's your right tech well that goes searching for right that goes
08:58shanahan and lynch that's that's not on brock though no i know and that's where i'm like i'm like
09:03okay so you didn't protect him when he was making a million how are you gonna protect him when he's
09:07making 53 so who's under more pressure to live up to that contract is it actually go to the front
09:11office okay shanahan i know what brock's gonna do he's a lunch pail guy he's gonna be ready to go
09:17i don't question his motivation i don't question his iq i don't question his toughness i don't question
09:22any of those things i question can you build the team around him which sucks because i feel like i'm
09:27raining on everyone's parade today i don't think you're raining on everyone's parade i think he's just
09:30talking about the reality of the situation the reality of the situation is you're coming off
09:33a non-playoff season a lot of injuries happen a lot of tragedies happened around this team so maybe
09:39it was a one-off you trim some of the fat if you will financially you give brock this fat contract
09:44i think he's earned it whether you think it's too a little too much no he has absolutely earned a
09:48giant pay raise i don't deny that at all george kittle earned a pay raise he was incredible last
09:53season it was him and brock bowers two best titans in football he gets rewarded because of it he was
09:58the leader of that team during the devontre campbell situation he stepped up in a major way last year
10:02even in a lost season uh fred warner looks like he's going to get paid as well as he should so
10:08the three leaders of your team are getting rewarded i love that i love that um prior to that uh this
10:14past season you know brandon iu who had a really good year the year prior he was awesome he was
10:19incredible but the way it looked the way it all went down the way it was is he going to train
10:24to pittsburgh is he not oh mike tomlin oh he looks like me oh like that whole situation then a year
10:28prior the nick bosa stuff it was all just ah just not good business it felt like it just felt like
10:35dirty is the wrong word just i didn't feel right heading into the season even though he went to the
10:40super bowl or the nsd championship in those years it just didn't feel right this for me it feels right
10:47it feels good it feels fresh it feels like okay you're actually making some big boy decisions and
10:53it didn't feel like a panic move for me it didn't feel desperate for me and all these how are you
10:58feeling 49ers fans 888-957-9570 i want to go to rob and sam bruno how he's feeling about this
11:0549ers deal rob long time no here how you doing man what's up rob what's going on fellas i'm doing
11:11great i can't complain man look i'm gonna say that's probably the worst deal in niner history man
11:16i mean come on now we went 6 and 11 last year and we're rewarding we're rewarding people guys for
11:22going 6 and 11 last year purdy not worth 53 million dollars when you say that money i look at lamar
11:28jackson i look at burrow and i look at josh allen i need that type of performance from purdy every week
11:33every week i need that you can't you can't give a guy 53 million who just admitted he can't see over
11:39the whole line and can't play in the ring and you're gonna get a guy all that money when you got other
11:44areas that need to be fixed you need a linebacker you need help in safety you need help at corner
11:48you need help at o-line we i think we addressed the d-line but you still on you don't know them
11:54guys can play yet until they get on the field so you put all your basket all your money into this
11:58one guy who to me physically when i say i'm not talking about team oh he went to super no the team
12:04went to super i'm talking about physically can he do what those other 50 million dollars quarterbacks
12:09to do can he throw the ball downfield without the threat of play action i just felt like if cfc get
12:15hurt for a four or five game period i think this becomes a worse deal now here's because those
12:22other guys are asked to carry a franchise party's not asked to do that he's asked the game manage
12:27and make plays when they're there so so it means you can't compare them with that and all the other
12:32dudes because the mother dude are asked to be franchise leaders party's not asked to do that so you
12:37played this guy 53 million dollars to be a league game manager i don't agree with that so what should
12:41they have done then rob what would you have done i mean he was making what 900 000 if you gave him
12:4840 000 with more a little more guaranteed not 40 million excuse me 40 million i mean that's that's
12:54one hell of a race i just he's not a 53 million dollar quarterback so it's the number for you so if it
12:59was 40 instead of 50 you'd be feeling better about it yeah because 53 for 50 means i make more than
13:06amara jackson amara jackson had uh almost a thousand yards passing four thousand yards throwing
13:11almost 40 40 touchdowns can can party live up to that can't live what borough was doing and that's
13:16why i'm looking i'm not now i'm not judging them off you know the the the top 20 i'm judging on the
13:22top five now and that's the pressure they put on this guy so cfc needs stay healthy cfc don't stay
13:27healthy this could be the worst deal in our history to be honest with you that's thanks rob it's really
13:31strong really strong right now it's that's a really strong opinion i don't think i agree with
13:36it i mean i get his point he's gone to a super bowl josh allen hasn't lamar jackson hasn't i'm just
13:41telling like whether that's fair or not i'm just telling you the facts those guys haven't been to a
13:47super bowl brock purdy has been a quarter away from winning a super bowl as a starting quarterback in an
13:53mvp caliber season would those guys trade their player for yours no okay it's fine i don't care
14:01no i know but like we do this thing we're like well those like i always see it like josh allen
14:05hasn't won anything it's like come on josh allen's one of the best players one of the best players in
14:10the league hands down without a doubt and the bills wouldn't trade you pretty like we can be
14:14reasonable here we can acknowledge that like okay his team has come up short he he by the way had
14:20mahomes beat multiple times and his defense let him down yes and his kicker let him correct all right
14:24um teams advance and that's my that's my big thing this morning teams are what wins
14:31not just players and my biggest question is i'm happy for the player he deserves a giant pay raise
14:37how can this team win a super bowl not just brock it's not gonna be just brock you know brock's gonna
14:44need juwan jennings to ball out and cmc to ball out and for them to have a really good defense and all
14:48those things like he's gonna need all these draft picks to hit michael williams for example has got
14:53to be an absolute star like it goes beyond brock and so i but but when you pay one guy this amount of
14:59money every player you bid a doo-doo like dre greenlaw that seven or eight million dollar
15:04difference like you're gonna look back at the quarterback and you're gonna say can you elevate
15:08the loss of that player and that player and that player that's how fans do the math now
