00:00Big weekend in the National Football League with some news following, of course, what was scheduled a release week around the NFL a week ago.
00:08Friday night here on the East Coast, Friday afternoon, we'll give them out by the bay in San Francisco.
00:14The 49ers announce a large contract extension for quarterback Brock Purdy.
00:19At the end of his third year of his National Football League career, Mr. Irrelevant, the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, hits a big payday.
00:29Five years, $265 million.
00:33That is $53 million per year on annual average basis.
00:39Now, 10 quarterbacks around the National Football League make north of $50 million per season, Brock Purdy included.
00:48Donna, you said right before the break that you think the timing of this announcement from the 49ers as an organization is indicative of what?
01:00They want to avoid public scrutiny in every way possible because organizations love celebrations.
01:06And when they do something right, they want to let everybody know about it.
01:09You've had, I don't know, let's just say months and months and months, Ben, to get ready for this moment where you expected to sign Brock Purdy.
01:17And when that's done, you would figure it's a monster press release very early in the week to celebrate Brock Purdy, get him on the rounds, radio stations.
01:24And when it's a hot topic, everybody knows in the sports business, political business, business, business, business, I should say.
01:31When you have bad news, you dump that on a Friday night because the markets aren't going to catch up on a Saturday and Sunday.
01:37And by Monday, so many things happen over the weekend, you don't even remember Brock Purdy, which is case in point.
01:42Like, just looking at the notes here, I wasn't even going to come on the show and talk Brock Purdy at all until you mentioned it.
01:47And then you stoke the fire once again.
01:49Now, hear me out.
01:50Brock Purdy is a good NFL quarterback.
01:53Nobody's going to argue that.
01:54The statistics bear.
01:55He's had solid numbers on a good football team with a great offensive coordinator.
01:59But, Ben, we all understand how business works at this point.
02:02You don't bid against yourself.
02:04The reason I bring this up is he's making so much money now.
02:07And, again, it is the going rate for a quarterback, and I'm trying not to contradict myself with the plan I'm trying to lay out.
02:13But understand this.
02:14It does go back to Daniel Jones.
02:15And Brock Purdy is so much better than Daniel Jones.
02:18But not a single other football team wanted Daniel Jones as their starting quarterback for anywhere near the price point that the Giants signed them to.
02:27So you're bidding on yourself.
02:28And I say the same thing, and we'll never know.
02:30And, yes, Brock Purdy could have played this year under $500,000, $800,000, whatever it was, and then become a free agent.
02:35But I guarantee you this right now.
02:37Brock Purdy is making significantly more playing with a hometown team than he would on the open market, which then leads into the York family.
02:44When your window is steadily closing at this point and you're losing players to injury and you just can't keep up with the salary cap is what we're telling because you had to get ready for Brock Purdy signing.
02:53Every $5,000, $10,000, $15 million makes such a big deal when you're trying to keep that football team together.
03:00And if I told you right now, like what, by the way, Brock Purdy's, is it $50 million?
03:04Like what was the final number on his contract, like the average?
03:07Was it $50,000, $55,000?
03:08$53 million per year.
03:09Something in that range?
03:10$53 million per year.
03:11Yeah.
03:12$53 million a year.
03:13I'm telling you right now, there is no way any other NFL team was giving Brock Purdy $50-plus million a year.
03:19Oh, Donnie, you don't know that.
03:20Yes, you were bidding against yourself at this point.
03:24You were probably better off saying, you know what, Brock?
03:26Yeah.
03:27We couldn't find a trained partner or a contract, whatever it was.
03:29We want to keep you as quarterback.
03:30You're going to play another year on this contract.
03:32And if you are phenomenal, we're going to franchise tag you at upwards of $60-plus million because you deserve it.
03:38And maybe he did.
03:40But for me, Ben, just the simplest point, that was a Friday news dump.
03:43You overpaid the guy, a solid quarterback.
03:46Nobody in the rest of the NFL teams were going to pay him that much money.
03:50You played yourself, 49ers.
03:51You did.
03:53And in fairness, as it should be said, Brock Purdy under contract for one more year in his rookie deal entering 2025.
04:00So it wasn't like he had market value where other teams were making a bid.
04:04Could the Niners get a sense of what that open market value would look like?
04:08I am sure.
04:10For me, DRS, it's not overly shocking.
04:12I thought Brock Purdy would make north of $50 million.
04:15Is he worthy of it?
04:17That's a different conversation.
04:19It is the going rate for quarterbacks.
04:21I said 10 QBs in the NFL make north of $50 million per year.
04:25Now make it 11 with the addition of Brock Purdy tied for the seventh highest salary on an annual average per year basis alongside Jared Goff.
04:36In all of those deals, all 11 quarterbacks that make more than $50 million per year have signed those extensions.
04:44And now the last three offseasons, dating back to the offseason entering 2023.
04:51It is just the inflation price for a quarterback salary in the NFL.
04:56There are some, Donnie, that would say, could Brock Purdy serve as an inflection point?
05:02Is he worthy of $53 million per year?
05:05Could the NFL itself, in giving a contract extension for a starting quarterback, say, you're really good, you're the face of our franchise, but here's $45 million per year, and that's where we feel comfortable.
05:19The Niners decided not to do that.
05:21It is all very fascinating because it's the context that Purdy has dealt with the entirety of his NFL career.
05:28If he was a second-round pick, would we be looking at this contract extension the same way?
05:34Brock Purdy has always been Mr. Irrelevant.
05:37When he took over the reins for an injured Jimmy Garoppolo during the end of his rookie year in 2022, led San Francisco to the NFC Championship game, it was always the idea.
05:48Is it Brock Purdy?
05:50Is it Kyle Shanahan's system?
05:52Is it the cast and crew around the quarterback spot?
05:55Could anybody go out there and be as successful?
05:58I think we have debunked that idea to an extent, but I still think that narrative does follow Brock Purdy, which makes $53 million still seem a little bit outlandish.
06:09Exactly, and also understand this, too.
06:11You're right about this situation, Ben.
06:13It wasn't like there was some sort of agreement where if you're the last pick in the draft, you can never be franchise-tagged.
06:18And I was like, well, if we let this play out, we might just lose him for nothing at this point, even though we've only got him for $800,000 for the past couple years,
06:25which is the biggest steal in football to get a quarterback playing above his pay grade.
06:28But now you take a look at it and say, all right, well, he didn't even get a hometown discount.
06:33Like, hey, man, you're making $800,000.
06:34Why don't we settle on $35,000, $38 million that, let's just say, Baker Mayfield is getting or something on that extension type of range.
06:41He got top market value here without even having the gun to the 49ers where they held him.
06:46Where, again, he could have played out at less than $1 million this year, and then they go, man, you're really good.
06:51Good, I want my $60 million.
06:53Yeah, I don't think we're going to give it to you for four or five years.
06:54How about $60 for one year and we'll try to redo this again like they were doing with Dak Prescott down in Dallas?
06:59I'm not saying he can't live up to expectations and that money.
07:02Nobody was paying him that much.
07:03You can't overpay in the NFL with the salary cap and expect to win championships here.
07:07And the Niners are losing players already because of it.
07:10So let's talk about that money and what it means for the Niners now.
07:14Brock Purdy signs his new big deal, a five-year contract extension worth $265 million, $53 million per year.
07:24Brock Purdy now one of the 11 quarterbacks around the National Football League that make at least $50 million per year.
07:32Tied for the seventh highest annual average salary alongside Jared Goff, both at $53 million per season.
07:41And, Donnie, that is news in itself.
07:43It is also news for San Francisco that has spent a lot of money in the past few off seasons with a lot of a discount on their quarterback salary.
07:53When you are the final pick of the 2022 NFL draft, of any NFL draft, your rookie contract is an absolute steal,
08:02especially if that contract is at the quarterback spot and is your starting QB.
08:09Brock Purdy, in his first three years in the NFL, made $2.6 billion in total.
08:14Brock Purdy, per week, on average, as a part of this new contract extension, will make $2.9 million per week,
08:24making more than he made in the first three years combined of his NFL career.
08:29So where does that leave San Francisco entering this year?
08:32A Niners team expected to bounce back with a win total.
08:36That leaves me scratching my head at 10 and a half.
08:39Yeah, I didn't take a look all the way and, like, you know, analyze their schedule per se.
08:44So I'm sure the win total probably correlates to the type of schedule that they do have.
08:47But also understand this.
08:49When you're looking at the lineup that the 49ers are in, and also with Brock Purdy,
08:53you can't slam their guys because they have a very good, you know, surrounding supporting cast and or a great coach.
08:57It's not fair to do that because then again, you're saying, like,
09:00anybody could be a good quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers and Kyle Shanahan.
09:04And that hasn't always been the case here.
09:06But the offensive line was always above average.
09:08You might have some question marks coming into the season about that line.
09:11George Kittle just got paid.
09:12He's still one of the best headings in football, but also getting up there a little bit in years.
09:16Ricky Pierce saw one of those first-round draft picks you hope is going to take the next step.
09:20Jennings, is he still going to be effective?
09:21And also Brandon Ayuk, who's coming off a leg, a devastating knee injury at this point.
09:26And Christian McCaffrey has, like, maybe two bionic legs.
09:29So we're not looking at the 49ers coming into the season like, all right, full throttle, let's go out there.
09:33There's a lot of question marks with this team for the 49ers.
09:36If they do stay healthy, yes, they will be a problem.
09:39Because, again, Brock Perry is a solid quarterback.
09:42And if McCaffrey is, let's just say, Ben, 75% of what he was two years ago,
09:47that's still good enough to be a top-five NFL running back here.
09:50And then George Kittle, as I told you, the wide receivers, if they can get healthy and still perform.
09:54But the defense also lost some of their playmakers over the past couple years.
09:58And that's going to be an issue as well.
09:59That all-elite linebacking core, now it seems like we're just down to Fred Warner at this point here.
10:05So there's a lot of things to tune up.
10:07But I'm not going to doubt it because I've always liked the 49ers.
10:09I've always liked the franchise specifically, betting them week to week with offensive props
10:13because Kyle Shanahan is one of the best play callers in the NFL over the past 10 to 15 years.
10:18But for me, they probably will make the playoffs because a lot of teams make the playoffs.
10:21But I didn't look over the schedule just yet to really take a look at that 10 and a half,
10:25which shows me that their schedule is not nearly as hard as when we were pre-doing some of the teams in the NFC East just last week.
10:31Yeah, absolutely so.
10:33DRS, in the NFC East, all four teams, or at least in the NFC North, all four teams,
10:38four of the 10 most difficult schedules in the National Football League.
10:42The San Francisco 49ers, based on projection.
10:44Oh, they've got a good schedule.
10:45Rest, home field advantage.
10:47They have the easiest schedule in the NFL, according to Warren Sharp.
10:50Thus, why you have 10 and a half.
10:53The under has the juice at minus 135.
10:56Donnie, there's no question.
10:57The 49ers have a ton of talent.
10:59But for me, they have a ton of question marks still, based on some of the injuries, of course,
11:04that led to the 49ers only winning six games a season ago.
11:09But at their peak, San Francisco as successful as many teams around the NFL.
11:15They have played in four of the previous six NFC Championship games, four of the last five entering last year.
11:22They have reached two Super Bowls in the last six-year window, of course,
11:26coming up short against the Kansas City Chiefs in each.
11:29And they have been in odds, darling.
11:31The odds have always been optimistic on the San Francisco 49ers because of the overwhelming amount of talent.
11:39So is this odds optimism?
11:41Is it an easy schedule?
11:42Is it overrated because of the odds?
11:45Or is it proven?
11:47For me, Donnie, I think there are really good teams.
11:50I think there are really bad teams in every NFL year.
11:52I think there are fascinating teams.
11:54I think the 49ers are the most fascinating team in the NFC because we'll figure out if the odds are true, I think, rather quickly.
12:03No, and you're right about that.
12:05Like, we're going to get news.
12:06And if Christian McCaffrey says he's feeling as great as he is, he does tend to get injury-prone.
12:11But when he was an injury-prone, man, that offense was an absolute machine.
12:14But, again, we're used to Debo Samuel being full tilt in that offense.
12:17He's no longer there.
12:18Brandon Ayuk, one of the better young wide receivers in football, leg injury here.
12:21There's so many question marks where if all those questions are answered, yeah, they'll probably get 11 wins.
12:26But if those questions are 50-50, they're not going to get 11 wins.
12:29I don't care what their schedule is.
12:31Completely agree.
12:32The hour number three, up next.
