Kyle Crabbs discusses why the San Francisco 49ers got such a good deal with Brock Purdy's contract extension!
Transcript
00:00The San Francisco 49ers are all in on Brock Purdy and not only are they right for being so,
00:07I think they actually got themselves a pretty good deal.
00:12Kyle Krabs with A to Z Sports and the San Francisco 49ers threw a stone at the NFL world
00:19just as it was settling into the weekend on Friday afternoon with reports that they had
00:24agreed to a five-year, $265 million contract extension with quarterback Brock Purdy.
00:31Purdy, of course, is an essential figure for San Francisco and their past build and now their future build
00:37because he hit as Mr. Irrelevant and helped bail the 49ers out after they whiffed on the selection of Trey Lance.
00:44That costly decision cost San Francisco multiple first-round picks
00:48and Purdy has been one of the stories of the NFL ever since.
00:52But some of the speculation around Purdy has been centered around how good of a fit he is
00:57for Kyle Shanahan's offensive system versus how good of a franchise quarterback he can be.
01:04Well, after the terms of this contract have been agreed to,
01:07Purdy now sits tied for seventh amongst NFL quarterbacks with an annual average salary of $53 million per season.
01:15And if that price point makes you squeamish, it's understandable.
01:19But now's a great time to zoom out and consider how we measure NFL contracts in today's NFL climate.
01:26Consider this. Brock Purdy was scheduled to enter into 2025 with one year remaining
01:31and after playtime and performance adjustments, $5.3 million due to him this upcoming season, a contract year.
01:38After adding the five years and $265 million of new money that are going to be on this contract extension,
01:46San Francisco now has six years of player control at $270 million in cash.
01:52That is an average of $45 million per season.
01:55Now, whether it's $45 or $53 million per year on average, nobody's going to argue that that is an absolute boatload of cash
02:04that's coming to Brock Purdy, who was playing for pennies on the dollar as the final pick in the 2022 NFL draft.
02:11But you remember how your grandpa used to tell you about how eggs were 85 cents back in the day?
02:16The NFL salary cap is going through something similar.
02:19The inflation rate in which the salary cap is going up should change your perception on salaries for players across the league,
02:28not just quarterback contracts, because paying $55 million per year on a quarterback like the Bengals did two years ago
02:35for when the salary cap was $224 million for Joe Burrow is not the same as the Jacksonville Jaguars
02:43spending $55 million per year on a $255 million cap last season.
02:48Or alternatively, how after Buffalo adjusted Josh Allen's contract this offseason with a salary cap that sat at $279 million,
02:57the power of the dollar is going further than ever before because of the inflation.
03:04And for Brock Purdy's contract to come in tied with what Jared Goff's annual average was last year
03:09and to come in within $100,000 of what Tua Tungvaloa's annual average salary was last year
03:15when he signed at the beginning of training camp,
03:18versus the growth in the salary cap that's gone up almost $25 million,
03:23that's a win for San Francisco.
03:25Consider this, Brock Purdy's annual average salary as a percentage of this year's cap
03:30is less than 19% on average.
03:34That doesn't even crack the top 12.
03:37It ranks 14th amongst all quarterback contracts.
03:41So when you zoom out, you not just look at the raw numbers involved on the contract,
03:46and you look at the economics relative to the inflation rate of the salary cap,
03:51thanks to things like Peacock and YouTube TV and legalized gambling and fantasy football
03:57and advertising dollars and new TV deals,
03:59all helping accelerate the spending ceiling for NFL franchises,
04:03because I think the 49ers got themselves a pretty good deal.
04:07And then there's also the human element of this that so often gets overlooked in the debate of whether you should or shouldn't pay a player.
04:14This is not a football avatar that you can plug into your Madden team
04:18and expect to have different results as soon as he goes somewhere else.
04:21He's a human being, and how he interacts with the coaches matter.
04:24How he interacts with the media matters.
04:26How he interacts with his teammates matters.
04:29The 49ers know who Brock Purdy is.
04:32They know his strengths.
04:33They know his weaknesses.
04:35They know his limitations.
04:36And as this team embarks on their newest build,
04:40they now have the opportunity to build around Brock Purdy's strengths
04:45while having flexibility because they have chosen to give him a long-term contract.
04:50And remember, there's always an out on these deals.
04:54And as we get more of the details to Purdy's contract,
04:56it will be fascinating to find out just how much wiggle room and flexibility the 49ers have.
05:02But as compared to not paying Purdy and playing hardball and insisting on offering him $30 million
05:07because that's what he's worth,
05:10giving him the contract extension that gives San Francisco more wins than losses on the ledger of the contract
05:16still leaves the door open for San Francisco to spontaneously,
05:20if the right replacement comes along,
05:24make the upgrade like Kansas City did when they had Alex Smith and traded up to draft Patrick Mahomes
05:29or like Philadelphia did when they drafted Jalen Hurts after paying Carson Wentz
05:34or like what the Baltimore Ravens did when they traded up for Lamar Jackson
05:38while having Joe Flacco under contract
05:40or what the Los Angeles Rams did after paying Jared Goff
05:44and then eventually trading for Matthew Stafford.
05:46There is always a pivot available and how you structure the contract is equally as important to whether or not you choose to give one.
05:56That will be the next pieces of details that we need to assess regarding Brock Purdy,
06:01San Francisco and their newfound marriage together because the honeymoon stage is over.
06:07The 49ers are no longer playing with house money.
06:09They've put their money where their mouth is and they have pushed their chips all in on Brock Purdy.
06:16And in doing so, I think they got themselves a pretty good deal.
