00:00HPV itself can be divided into the high-risk and low-risk HPV. High-risk
00:06obviously can cause carcinogenic problems such as anal cancer but low
00:11risk is associated with genital wart or anal wart. So today we're going to focus
00:17on what exactly can the actual virus result in cancerous changes in the anus.
00:30Anal cancer is exceedingly rare however it becomes more and more apparent whenever we see
00:37the cervical cancer numbers coming down because of natural protection for women is actually stronger
00:44and also vaccination is a lot more prevalent in women. So as a result in developing countries
00:51we begin to see a slight increase in anal cancer in a rate of about two percent every year. And
00:57what does the exactly anal cancer is caused by? In fact the HPV virus 16 and 18 itself
01:05can result in cancerous changes in the anal mucosa which is the surface of the anus itself.
01:12With time if this persistent and immune system drops and then cancerous changes occur. So how do we know
01:21that someone actually is at risk? In fact some people think that although men having sex with men
01:27increase the risk significantly but even men don't have sex with men the risk is there because the mode
01:33of transmission is not just through sex the mode of transmission can be through tactile touching or
01:40through dirty towels. So HPV itself we don't really know. First of all we'll actually inoculate in the
01:50anal verge or itself can actually transform. So what's the best way to protect yourself? Actually it's vaccination.
01:58Vaccination actually is licensed to both boys and girls. So because both men and women both are at risk of getting
02:06HPV and then both the HPV if it gets to the anus can result in anal cancer. So anal cancer itself
02:13obviously is notoriously difficult to treat. Some people end up having incontinence therefore to avoid
02:20this most importantly to avoid getting HPV altogether by vaccination. Next week we're going to talk about the
02:28actual problems with genital wards. Yes some people call it cauliflowers in the wards and or genital and it
02:36can be described in many ways. The way to find out obviously is stay tuned for next week's Putting Dr G on the Spot
