For this week, we're going to talk about infection in the prostate.
00:04
As you can imagine, infection in the prostate is named as prostatitis.
00:15
Prostatitis can be developed into two categories.
00:19
One group is called acute prostatitis.
00:22
This is when an acute infection in the prostate resulting in severe pain,
00:26
pain on ejaculation, blood in your semen and also sometimes high temperature.
00:32
This is quite serious.
00:34
It usually is as a result of immunocompromised
00:37
or somebody who had a biopsy of the prostate
00:40
or somebody who has an infection that creates an abscess in the prostate.
00:44
And this can be incredibly painful
00:46
and non-treatment of this condition can result in sepsis.
00:50
So acute prostatitis itself will require intravenous antibiotics
00:54
and oftentimes, men have to be admitted to the hospital
00:59
for several days for intravenous antibiotics.
01:02
But on the contrary,
01:05
chronic prostatitis is a condition that can happen in a less severe form.
01:12
Chronic prostatitis can happen in a symptomatic manner
01:17
and non-symptomatic manner.
01:19
Non-symptomatic is when the prostatitis result in high PSA,
01:23
the biopsy shows that there's inflammatory changes in the prostate
01:27
so it is not apparent to the person itself having no symptoms at all.
01:33
However, chronic prostatitis such as chronic bacterial prostatitis
01:37
can be the vein of many men's life
01:39
that can create pelvic pain, difficulty in passing urine,
01:44
frequent urination, painful ejaculation and that comes on and off.
01:49
It typically is triggered by dehydration.
01:53
However, certain foods such as spicy food or food rich in uric acid
01:58
such as shellfish and also nuts and beans and also red meat
02:02
can also trigger prostatitis resulting in intermittent frequent urination,
02:08
urgency and frequency.
02:11
And chronic prostatitis apart from needing antibiotics
02:14
sometimes will require medications such as alpha blockers,
02:18
5-alpha reductase inhibitors and so anti-inflammatory.
02:23
And all these will help to suppress inflammation
02:25
and result in improvement on the symptoms.
02:29
And oftentimes, this is coming on a recurrent basis
02:32
and it will need to be treated on a regular basis.
02:35
For the new month of May, we're focusing on another form of infection,
02:40
sometimes sexually transmitted
02:42
and then it is a form of infection caused by a virus called HPV.
02:47
Then you need to stay tuned for next week's Putting Dr. G on the Spot.
