Hello there, welcome to another episode of putting Dr G on the spot in the fresh month of April
00:04
when we're discussing various forms of infection and during Ramadan a lot of
00:09
people probably encounter problems of infection and this is commonly known as cystitis
00:20
Cystitis actually stands for infection in the bladder and commonly it happens in women
00:26
more than happen in men. Why is that the case? In fact it's a simple anatomy problem. For men
00:33
the urethra is much longer that is through the penis itself and therefore it's less likely to
00:39
get infected but for women urethra is shorter and therefore likely to get infection. Cystitis is
00:45
very common it's believed to affect one in three women in their lifetime and the common time that
00:52
they get this are during childhood and they also can get it during pregnancy whenever they are
00:58
sexually active and also whenever they are encountering problems of menopause. And what
01:04
exactly is this? In fact it's because of a type of bacteria called E. coli. E. coli occurs in around
01:12
the genital area and somehow get into the bladder itself and causes cystitis. Commonly this can be
01:20
due to dehydration, incomplete bladder emptying, stone formation and also sexual activities.
01:28
When infection itself is not related to any other complicated anatomy or stones then it's called a
01:35
simple cystitis. When the infection itself is recurring three times a year or more then it's
01:42
called recurrent cystitis. When the infection itself is happening in the first debut of sexual
01:49
activity is called honeymoon cystitis. Honeymoon cystitis is not a sexually transmitted infection
01:56
it's the way the body tries to get used to sexual activities and therefore occasionally
02:01
that itself will push bacteria into the bladder causing cystitis. Most of the time cystitis is
02:07
self-resolving with antibiotics or with lots of hydration. However this needs to be eradicated so
02:14
that it doesn't form a recurrent infection and causing the vein in many people's life. So now you
02:20
know honeymoon cystitis is most likely due to initial debut in sexual activity. It's not related
02:27
to sexually transmitted infection. From one form of infection we are moving on to talk about other
02:33
form of infection, urethritis. And how do you get it and why do some people have no symptoms at all
02:39
especially women? Then you need to stay tuned for next week's Putting Dr G on the Spot.
