From severe storms in the Midwest to a cooldown in the Northeast, AccuWeather's Joe Lundberg breaks down what to expect over the coming week.
Transcript
00:00And you know, Joe, Washington, D.C., it has been dry, dry, dry over the last several months.
00:05We still have that drought from Florida to southeastern New England.
00:09Yeah, we took a big chunk out of this for early in the week, but that's now going to start to dry out in the period ahead.
00:14These areas, since this was released on Thursday, have had quite a bit of rain.
00:19In fact, you look at the rainfall over the past three days in these areas, and you focus in.
00:23You notice that much of the east has had some rain, but since Tuesday, this is the area that's been hit very hard.
00:28There's another round of thunderstorms coming through right now, so that's helping to wipe out the drought in these areas.
00:34And I think there's more rain in the forecast as we go through next week.
00:37Let's look at the three things to know about next week.
00:39It's highlighted by the severe weather threat from the plains to the Midwest.
00:42There's going to be a lot of cool air in contrast to the heat this week in the northern plains and Midwest all the way to the northeast.
00:48And in contrast, the west is going to dry out and by the end of next week and next weekend, it's going to be pretty toasty in much of the west.
00:55We are very concerned, Joe, about early next week across the plains states.
01:01Two straight days of severe weather, first in the southern plains and then by Tuesday across parts of the mid-south again.
01:08Yeah, it's part of one of these upper-level low-pressure areas rolling out of the southern Rockies,
01:11and it's just going to ignite widespread severe weather in these places.
01:15And if you look at the pattern for next week, that's where this feature is going to be probably by Wednesday.
01:20So it will be moving away from the southern plains and it will start to improve.
01:24And that's where you're going to start to see this upper-level ridge over the Gulf of Mexico poke its nose westward.
01:29And that means turning drier, warmer, and hotter, if you will.
01:32And in the northeast, you're going to be seeing a lot of cool air.
01:35Look at the Salt Lake City five-day or seven-day forecast.
01:38We start in the 70s and then drop into the 50s this weekend.
01:41By the end of next week, we're in the 80s.
01:43It could be 90s over the Memorial Day weekend.
01:44In contrast, look at New York City.
01:46We cool it off days in the 60s, maybe upper 50s, late next week and into the Memorial Day weekend.
01:53All right, good stuff, Joe. Thanks.
