Our top story continues to be this multi-day severe storm threat plaguing much of the central
00:04
U.S.
00:05
So we had hail reports up to four and a half inch diameter.
00:08
Strong wind in the Midwest earlier this evening, well last night and into the overnight hours.
00:13
But we've had tornado damage reported in Indiana last night too, Brie.
00:17
Yeah, check out some of these storms that we saw just over the past few days.
00:23
Big winds, rotation that you're seeing there, residents from the Dakotas to Indiana and
00:27
Kentucky should also be on alert for intense thunderstorm activity.
00:33
And well, that's not all.
00:34
Severe weather is expected to impact those same areas of the central states again between
00:39
Wednesday and Thursday, Jeff.
00:41
Now storms will then shift further east through the Ohio Valley even into Friday.
00:46
So we have a long ways to go with the severe weather threat.
00:49
There's a bit of a storm marathon this week here.
00:53
At least it's not storming at all times in all places, obviously.
00:55
Kansas City's a hot spot, 97 degrees still, lots of sunshine out there.
01:00
And we're going to be dealing with more in the way of some thunderstorms through parts
01:03
of the northern plains and the Ohio Valley in the Midwest.
01:07
Most of the Ohio Valley at the moment is fine, unless you get down to the lower Ohio Valley
01:10
where we have clusters of thunderstorms rumbling through southwest Indiana, southern Illinois,
01:15
and into western parts of Kentucky.
01:16
Some flash flooding is a concern.
01:18
New flash flood warnings have been issued for an area around Benton and West Frankfort,
01:23
and Illinois, Pinckneyville, and Daquan as well.
01:26
Let's go farther south because I don't want to miss the North Georgia thunderstorm threat.
01:31
If you're in Atlanta right now, things are still quiet for you.
01:34
It's very steamy, but we have strong storms tumbling into North Georgia from the north,
01:39
and these are going to continue to move into the Atlanta metro this evening.
01:43
So you've been added under a relatively past hour or so new severe thunderstorm watch there
01:48
in North Georgia.
01:50
Still some strong storms rumbling through parts of extreme southwest North Carolina
01:55
into the mountains too.
01:57
As we take the map farther north, St. Louis metro, you've seen some showers around.
02:01
Most of the stronger storms are really east of there, up into the Vincennes area and the
02:06
Wabash River Valley, so look out south of Vincennes.
02:09
Heavy thunderstorms, severe thunderstorm warning in effect on the west side of the river into
02:13
places like Lawrence County of Illinois.
02:16
And then up into the Dakotas, here we have a totally different regime.
02:20
We're dealing with isolated storms where more people miss the storms than those who receive
02:25
the rain.
02:26
They're only occupying small pieces of land, but the storms that do develop are bringing
02:30
some big-time hail out there, and we've seen some large hail develop with this one storm
02:35
into Zybok County of eastern South Dakota, or southern South Dakota and Meade County,
02:40
and as we bring up the high-res radar data out of Rapid City, here you can see this is
02:45
a big storm.
02:46
I wanted to bring up the storm hazards feature and give you an estimate, up to 3-inch diameter
02:51
hail estimated by radar with this storm on the county line here between eastern Meade
02:57
and western Zybok County.
02:59
That's a big-time storm, so look out, we're going to see additional strong thunderstorms
03:02
break out into more of the Dakotas, and we have also a strong storm just north of Interstate
03:07
90 there into an area around Bismarck and to the north as well.
03:13
So many areas are under watches, severe thunderstorm watches, parts of six of these still, or at
03:17
this point, five of these in effect.
03:18
Bree, we're going to see more storms tomorrow, though, beyond the current round that's rumbling
03:23
right through the Midwest.
03:24
Yeah, but some of those areas still need to be on high alert as we head into tomorrow
03:29
because, well, the storms are setting up right in those same zones, unfortunately.
03:35
We've described that high pressure, and right along the periphery of it, that's that zone
03:39
that we have those storms continuing to fire off as that high pressure continues to bake
03:44
areas further west.
03:46
And we have plenty of moisture, another fuel that we need to help really spark these thunderstorms
03:51
across a lot of the same area, so we're not getting rid of those ingredients, those prime
03:55
ingredients that we would need for severe weather.
03:59
Now, cities at risk going to include a lot of the same areas that have been under that
04:04
threat risk over the past few days.
04:07
Those include Sioux Falls, Minneapolis, Ames, even through Omaha, those winds are going
04:12
to be gusting, and that's one of the big impacts that we're keeping a close eye out on, including
04:17
flash flooding as well, hail, and I'm not going to rule out an isolated spin-up or two.
04:22
Now, that zone that we're tracking, some of the strongest storms, is going to extend up
04:27
and down I-29.
04:28
Now, that's Fargo, Sioux Falls, Sioux Cities, Des Moines, that's what we're keeping a close
04:33
eye out on for more widespread severe weather, but anywhere that you see shaded, in the orange,
04:39
in the yellow, we could still see some strong storms.
04:42
The colors don't denote necessarily how strong the storms are going to be, just really how
04:46
many we are tracking.
04:48
More so isolated in the yellow, but still, tornadoes, isolated spin-ups, large hail,
04:53
damaging winds, they're all in the picture, as well as some heavy rain that could cause
04:57
some flooding there in the short term, so please, heads up, we are tracking some gusty
05:02
and strong thunderstorms roaring across this area, and unfortunately, some of them taking
05:06
on that bowing effect that tells me that winds are going to be a top concern, as these winds
05:12
are going to be howling across the zone.
05:14
Also, some of those storms taking on that circular shape that indicates that hail could
05:19
fall, and then even as we head into Thursday, we're tracking more in the way of severe weather.
