00:00welcome to overreact podcast in a society that tries to put women in a box let's overreact it's
00:09a girl mo mohoya and it's your girl lash angela and it's your girl angela one boy and it's your
00:14girl ann maura yay we're excited as you can see we already have our official first guest of the
00:27overreact and this is even more exciting because we are joining ann or we already have already
00:34started joining ann for the overreact hour on the fuse in case you missed it and in case you don't
00:42know what i'm on about every last wednesday of the month on the fuse we'll be having the overreact
00:48hour especially within the first hour 10 to 11 a.m and we're bringing women-centered conversations
00:55center stage and having discussions challenging stereotypes and challenging narratives and we
01:00had our first session this morning and so we decided why not continue with our conversation
01:06and have you on the show so welcome to the show thank you how does it feel to have us join you
01:13this time i'm so happy to talk to people again no honestly i'm really excited it feels like
01:19international women's month is just continuing yes which is perfect it fits the show perfectly
01:23i love destigmatizing conversations forward-thinking conversations and ladies who you know are bosses so
01:29it works well yay we're so excited to have you and you know as you as angela said we're going to be
01:35on the fuse and so we didn't want to just end the conversation there we actually wanted to switch
01:39things up because ann you're used to interviewing people all the time but now we have invited the
01:44fuser to come and overreact with us yes um so i mean i want to hear from you what does it mean to
01:50have this partnership this collaboration how do you see us fusing and growing together
01:54i'm really excited about this because i know you all individually all have different opinions big
02:04opinions as well uh so merging all of that together will be interesting i like the fact that
02:08there's going to be something for everybody to relate to and you know when it's just me it's just
02:13my narrative but now you're getting different perceptions and perspectives from different
02:17listeners as well um which is great and you guys tackle some issues and conversations i get too shy
02:23to talk about so it's going to be nice to you know have that boost to just step out of my comfort zone
02:28i would never associate you with the word shy right i was like yeah tell us more no i am people i got mad
02:38anxiety and stuff like for real um outwardly i seem like okay yeah oh my gosh she's out there
02:43but like look at my hands i'm just like this so well like zero zero um but yeah no sometimes i can't
02:51get quite shy especially like especially with the show because it's like my baby um so i get so scared
02:56to like toe the line i don't want to make people uncomfortable but now i get different opinions it
03:00pushes you out of that comfort zone i love that i love that yeah super grateful that we can be able
03:05to fuse and overreact you can already feel the energy is going to be electric can you imagine
03:11overreaction we were saying earlier how we're triple a like we're charging batteries so we're
03:20definitely gonna come and charge up the show yes that's gonna be great i think because some people
03:24might i'm gonna be the magnet my name is mo we've had you on the show before but we were more talking
03:31about your conversation with bonga and mental health and i think as as ang was saying that we
03:37want to do it differently we also want people to know you a bit more maybe um just to uh throw it
03:44back just tell us a little bit about your journey and how you got into journalism and then we can talk
03:49about like what women's month was about in terms of accelerating action and just yeah tell people a
03:55little bit about how and became the fuse you know and maura became the star of the show yeah yes i
04:03really cooked them all right no um i started off on hits not homework with anita and daru and tracy
04:09and drew um and joe kasilla man that was a fun time yeah i want to come is joe still dj he is still
04:16dj he's doing fantastic um so he was our dj and producer at the time and it was john farme there we
04:22had prodigy uh there as well we had lots of guests so i was on hits not homework which is
04:27predominantly um a hip-hop show and i was there lord um and then but i was like i have to get in
04:36as long as i get into the station and then i can maneuver to the show i really wanted to be on
04:40which is the fuse um and then when jira was leaving to america and one day they just told me
04:46they're like um go go try out on the fuse and on my first day my co-host didn't show up so it was
04:53just me and i did a pretty good job because they were like okay you're gonna stay here and that's it
04:58so i stayed and i have not left oh wow i remember you saying it seven years when was seven years when
05:03was it seven seven years on january 23rd i was a baby oh my gosh i look at the interns down i'm like oh
05:09i remember i remember the confusion the excitement the confusion um so yes you're doing a phenomenal
05:18job but also times have changed yes times have changed so much like when i started you know
05:23it's really interesting because i've had a lot of co-hosts if you've watched the fuse growing and
05:28changing and one of my favorite co-hosts i always talk about is nadia favori yeah so six years ago she
05:33had a podcast and i think it was just maybe her and like adele there was like literally maybe two
05:37three podcasts and then the rest of them were like on finance or politics but there's never
05:42really conversational ones and she kept telling me she's like let me tell you this podcast thing and
05:46like it's gonna grow you know how people say you should have been i should have been dancing in 2020
05:50on tiktok i should have been talking yapping yapping outside of radio um because now to watch
05:55how much it's changed and grown it's incredible i agree i honestly i agree yeah yeah how has that
06:02changed you um women in media and seven years in um how are you holding space for conversations to
06:09accelerate action towards gender equality all right i love that's a great question actually so um if
06:15you know i'm a girl's girl so like i really do like to put women in the conversations i like to have
06:19women-centered interviews my favorite colleagues have been women as well um like my producer is a
06:26woman she's fantastic her name is esther love her love her so much esther's like so sweet as well
06:29and we've also seen her grow actually yeah yeah esther was an intern yeah you know and now she
06:35commands the room so like watching people like her grow as well it's inspiring um i think even how
06:41it's changed is at the beginning i remember seven years ago it felt like not necessarily women were
06:48competing against each other but it wasn't as supportive as it is today you know i mean i was
06:54talking about this earlier in the week uh with lydia she's great about sharing rate cards about
06:59sharing opportunities like if i know something's not right for me um i know to pass it on to the
07:04next person the person who should be in that space because i know the best person will elevate better
07:09people to be there compared to just just taking it because i i want you know the gig or the cash so
07:15it's been nice to see that growing and changing in women's conversation and you've just done that
07:20three more seats i know yeah yeah and we honestly thank you also for believing in our idea and wanting
07:28to have us on board and charge each other and have like different conversations so i want to give you
07:35your flowers um for those who don't know ann is always championing what we do with heels for pads
07:40uh she will be doing something she'll be fundraising for us again soon um and so she's always she's always
07:48trying to figure out how can i do more for the girls that we support through heels for pads
07:52so uh last year we started and this year we're gonna do um something together where she'll fundraise
07:57and uh we went together it was actually the few of us yeah we went to a school that we support in
08:03kibera and uh it was nice to have you because you got to share with the girls your journey and even just
08:12pain points and it was also nice because we all have different like journeys so you didn't
08:17complete university we all different did different um ways of education so it was really nice for them
08:25to see that life isn't um what do i say a narrow path yeah like a linear yeah so and this is to speak
08:33to the and speak to the interns who i want to come into capital or want to do like media with all that
08:40you've known now especially because you just touched on the podcast and you should have been
08:44yapping a while ago yeah what you know now what would you tell ann and how would you do things
08:51differently oh so ann's there all right if i'm ann oh baby ann um i think it would be the imposter
09:02syndrome can if people can tell you have imposter syndrome then it lets them value you before you
09:08value yourself so i think i um entertained a lot of nonsense at the beginning and a lot of people
09:14who didn't have the best interest for me so i think i would tell myself really believe in yourself because
09:19people have put you in that space because they see something and the people trying to take you out of
09:24that space they also see something um and so really believe in what you're capable of doing and then
09:30surround yourself with the right people and people who want the best for you because that's how you're
09:34going to grow you can't do it alone so definitely would be you know surround yourself with the right
09:38people and believe you can do it because damn you can't wait for people to tell you well you'll be
09:43waiting seven years seven years yeah that's so good and then i extend the question to you and to you and i'll go
09:50last i i love what she said like the world is too noisy telling you you're not enough you're a woman
09:55and i think the only voice that i want to believe in is only my voice like deep down so yeah so what
10:04would you tell my ah it gets better yeah yeah they will look down on you they will put you in boxes
10:13but it's just a box you can fit in a container
10:16i don't know i think simply put do you i think when you're not paying attention to
10:24every it is important to know what else is going on in the world but literally
10:28you have to just hone in and look within um and really march to your own drumbeat unapologetically
10:34literally um and i think when you are just focusing on being the best version of yourself that's when
10:41you begin to attract the you know the collaborations the partnership and the people that you need in your
10:48life absolutely i think for me because i wanted to be an adult so quick and also because i have
10:57a big age gap with my sister i i was doing adult things as opposed to always being a child
11:03so i think angela or lush i think at the time you're just angela muayaki i will tell you
11:09enjoy the sunshine baby girl taste the rainbow and just be be a child in that season or in the
11:19season that you're in be in that moment don't move too quickly be present yeah um so and even when you
11:26talked about your journey and like surrounding yourself with the right people who is you know a
11:32woman that you would like to verbally give flowers to who who was that woman for you that guided you that
11:37helped you navigate through this crazy industry that's called media and you know maybe what it
11:42what is you know maybe something that they imparted on you that really helped you navigate through some
11:47of the challenges you you faced that's a great question as well uh it's no secret who's gonna be
11:52it's anita anita and daru she's my best friend she's pretty much family she is family at this point i love
11:58her kid uh you know her husband is a good friend he's a great mentor as well um but she really is
12:05my rock solid so she's the first person i did the show with i had never been in media hardly even been
12:12in kenya for almost five years at that time and on our first day it was chaos and i watched you know
12:19people literally like sending death threats to this person people like it was it was crazy it was crazy
12:24and it wasn't crazy for like one or two days this is my first time learning what kot was um it was
12:29crazy for almost two to three months of that and watching this person like get torn down by people
12:35who don't know her and this is my introduction to media um watching how she handled that was like
12:41okay this is a great mentor this is a great friend but this is someone with so much strength and
12:46kindness she matches that kindness all the time i've seen things behind the scenes you know what i mean
12:51yes she is that bubbly all the time and yes she will talk your ear off all the time but what she has to
12:56say really does matter and i take what she has to say uh with so much respect as well and she is a
13:02type of friend where um she'll call me out like she'll be like girl you look a hot mess let's get
13:08it together oh but she also will give me my flowers and that's what you need you need that person
13:13who who supports you through the good and the bad and she's definitely that person and she works
13:19really hard she really puts her all into everything her work that she does her family but also her
13:24friendships she's someone who we do dinners at her house she's she's a great host uh she really does
13:30that so people can check in on each other that's you know yeah and she has a lot going on you know
13:35what i mean like especially when she was a new mom we were all like oh we should give her space and
13:38she's like no everyone come to the house and you when you see kaya her daughter how confident kaya is
13:45kaya is like that because her mom is showing her what how to be a better woman you know i mean she's
13:51taking what she learned from her mom and she's elevating it into her daughter so it's amazing
13:55to see she's just like i just love that girl so much yeah and he said we give you your flowers
13:59yeah yeah that's that's so beautiful that is so beautiful i'm out here thinking what would
14:07somebody say about me that's lovely that's really nice yeah it's amazing and especially checking in
14:14on you like and it's very important that you know she brings you together through food
14:19yes i see her throwing down uh you're very big on mental health and and you know you're very aware
14:25in terms of you know how you feel around people how situations make you feel um how have you
14:32continued to advocate for mental wellness and health um you know in your work and outside maybe
14:39through friends okay yeah that's that's a great question as well so on my social media it says
14:44you've entered a safe space which means you can dm me any question that you have if you need contacts
14:49for free therapy uh or for paid therapy as well and then i've teamed up with uh institutions like
14:55shamiri institute they are amazing they have an app so from ages six to to 600 years old um you can
15:03get on there they are one of the biggest policy uh changers as well so you know how like
15:07uh suicide has been decriminalized they were a big part of that finally you know so have
15:13being around people so and tom tom is one of my really good friends he's the head of the institution
15:18um having people like that in your life as a man who who's very advocate for not just men
15:23but for young boys as well to open up and talk about it i think i try to create a safe space
15:28where it's not judged and then on the fuse we talk about mental health pretty much at least once a
15:32week i love that your 30 seconds um maybe routine how do you check in on yourself and maybe even you
15:39girls can go in how do you check in on yourself all right breathing it's my breathing yeah especially
15:44with anxiety you'll know like there's a chest your chest feels tight um or you feel like a bit dizzy
15:50sometimes so breathing is number one and then writing it down i've come to realize writing it down
15:55you realize maybe it's not that bad or maybe it is we need to like we need to get into this girl
15:59so writing it down having it black and white and you're like yeah so we got problems
16:05uh for me i i have pcos and also it comes with anxiety as well so i have my own players
16:12so sometimes i get i look at the brightest color in the room and also i give it a name
16:18and then it calms me down that's a great exercise that's so good so what you you're you're like look
16:24i always pick yellow whatever bright color my in that moment my eyes will pick okay what i will
16:33name i give it a name and then it centers me so what name would you give it like joy or so it can
16:40be red and then probably it tells my brain something like you know red it's something that i wear maybe
16:46red lipstick and i look good or just red registering that in my brain it just you know wires down my brain
16:54yeah that's actually a great technique to uh people should use it is because it stabilizes it puts
16:59you back in the moment exactly and it's private i can go like yeah and it's private because nobody
17:05will even know that you are dealing with a scenario so um so in public if i'm nervous or if i i just need
17:16to i'll go to a toilet i'll go to a toilet and i'll breathe and i'll say a prayer um toilet is often a
17:24safe haven in public spaces at home we're gonna have a conversation mirror to mirror yeah gonna talk
17:30it out and uh express them and then i have people i can call if i can't get my head around things
17:42um yeah that's how i deal with it um i think mother nature is a healer for me um so whether it just means
17:47going outside going outside to get some air some fresh air or just feeling the sunshine for me just
17:54being around nature is my healer so if i just need to step outside for like a few minutes
17:58um i know that always calms me down regardless of the situation um and of course i have my my sister
18:04and my girls on speed dial so that's awesome amazing thank you for sharing yes this is cute
18:11this is fun um so i think the last question if you had an opportunity to wave a magic wand and wipe
18:23something that is affecting women or even the youth what would that be for you oh i mean it goes back
18:29to what you guys are doing the work you're doing actually i was asked this on women's day that's
18:32interesting um it goes back to the work you're doing if i could wave a wand or what should change is
18:38simple how are we being taxed and paying for sanitary products this is a natural occurrence it is not
18:45going to go away it's it's barbaric at this point so why are we paying to be women yeah have you heard
18:53an yeah how is there a toilet paper in the toilet all the time and not a pad right someone asked me
19:00that question i was like right yeah all the time i'll be a tender for it if you need i would
19:08tender i love it so we'll cut here i think because then you need five more minutes
19:18is it 20 we're done right yeah well thank you so much for having me no we need to wrap it up
19:23it's just how many he needs to do you need more

20:27uh celebrating uh women from across the world and listening to their music while we have a
20:32conversation i think before most signs are off maybe if you can share how people can connect with
20:38you especially because you said that you know you like your space to be a safe space for people to talk
20:43to so just tell people what you what else you got going on and how people can connect with you
