00:00The territory of Israel's largest airport has been struck by a ballistic missile launched from Yemen.

00:15These images show the strike's impact on Ben Gurion International Airport,

00:20with smoke seen rising at the hub located some 20 kilometers from downtown Tel Aviv.

00:26Israeli air defenses targeted the missile launched by the Houthi militant group,

00:31but its interceptors apparently failed to stop it on multiple occasions.

00:36The IDF says an investigation into how the strike penetrated one of the nation's most secure locations is ongoing.

00:44Local journalist Nick Kaliohan told us more from the Aftermath site.

00:48Here behind me are the wars after the ballistic missile from Yemen hit the Israeli main airport, Ben Gurion,

00:59here behind me, just about 200 meters from the main terminal,

01:03where tens of thousands of people each day are taking off or coming to Israel.

01:10This is the main gate, I can say the only gate from Israel and to Israel.

01:16And you see how much fortune it was that the missile hit here, the ground behind me,

01:29then much more people could be injured and dead because many buses,

02:12they just went out of the car and they lay on the ground,

02:16they put their hands on their head,

02:18and in this position, they have the most chances to survive.

02:24Israeli people are educated with this information for safety,

02:29to save their lives.

02:30But many tourists that came today to Israel and were in the airport

02:34are not used to this sad reality.

02:36So there was a lot of panic.

02:39They didn't know what to do, where the air sirens came

02:42and they were so loud and they got just seconds to find a shelter

02:47before the rocket hit the ground.

02:51The Houthi group has publicly taken responsibility for the strike,

02:55saying that it's in response to Israel's actions in Gaza.

02:58A statement signed by the Yemeni armed forces

03:01warned all international airlines

03:03against continuing their flights to Ben Gurion Airport.

03:07While the exact type of ballistic missile used has yet to be announced,

03:10it was a new and advanced weapon if it invaded IDF air defences.

03:15This is the message from the Yemeni researcher

03:17and commentator Hussain Al-Bukhaiti,

03:19who we spoke with earlier.

03:22What we see in this missile,

03:25they failed actually,

03:27even though they have four layers of air defence

03:30that include as well third battery missile,

03:33one of the, as they say, most advanced missiles in the world.

03:36But I believe there is no need to investigate

03:39why they failed,

03:40because I think that this is actually a new type of missile,

03:43a new type of hyper-sonic missile with a larger warhead,

03:47because Yemeni army has announced just 20 minutes ago

03:51that they have launched this attack,

03:53but they haven't actually said the name of the missile.

03:56They always mention the name of the missile,

03:57like Palestine 2, hyper-sonic missile,

04:00or the Dhul-Fikar, ballistic missile.

04:03But because this time they haven't announced

04:05the exact name of the missile,

04:07it's clearly that this is actually a new type of missile.
