00:00Hey guys, it's Jen Green and Stryker from Tailwaggers Academy.
00:03We're here for the John DiBella Dog Walk at Ask the Trainer booth.
00:08One of the things that we're going to be working on today is
00:10how do I get my dog to stop jumping on people,
00:14whether it's in the house or if you're out and walking with your dogs.
00:18So when we're walking our dogs and you're allowing your dog to go say hi to people
00:23and they're jumping up, one of the biggest things that we hear all the time is,
00:27oh, it's okay, I'm a dog person.
00:30That's accidentally reinforcing that negative behavior that we're trying to extinguish.
00:34So one of the things that I would say is we can put this on cue,
00:38but we also need to tell whoever our dog is jumping on to turn their back,
00:43tell them off and walk away.
00:45That's the best way to handle this type of situations.
00:48It doesn't happen on the first time, guys.
00:50This is something that you're going to have to do consistently over and over.
00:54That's how our dogs learn, doing something consistently
00:57and the same outcome is every single time.
01:01The outcome would be you're not going to get pet if you're jumping up on anybody,
01:06whether it's a family member or out and about.
01:08So I'm going to have Stryker take a couple of steps backwards
01:12and then we're going to come up and approach somebody.
01:14If Stryker jumps up on this person, I will instruct them to turn their back and just walk away.
01:22If he walks up, I want him to actually sit first.
01:26It's almost like puppy please.
01:28So we're going to have our dog sit first.
01:30We're asking our dog to do something.
01:32So they're technically working for this.
01:34I don't like to food reward for this.
01:36I like it to be a life reward.
01:38Life rewards to me are the best rewards
01:41because it's something that happens in your dog's life every single time.
01:45Why fight the environment when you can actually work with it?
01:49And I'm going to show you what I'm talking about in a moment.
01:51Stryker, take a break, buddy.
01:52So I'm going to ask Stryker to go right in.
02:02Come here, buddy.
02:03Good boy.
02:04Ask him to go right into a sit.
02:06I'm going to point to the person and I am going to tell him,
02:10go say hi.
02:11Hi, Stryker.
02:12Good job, buddy.
02:14Very good.
02:15And then he can go ahead and sit down again.
02:17The whole key for this is making sure that your dog's paws remain on that ground at all times.
02:24That's the biggest thing with this exercise.
02:27If their paws come up even just a little bit, walk away.
02:31It's the best way to reinforce that behavior.
