00:00He was born in Chesapeake, Virginia.
00:02He started playing drums at the age of 11, but then picked up that guitar.
00:06And now he's on the phone, ladies and gentlemen, Nate Smith.
00:09Nate Smith!
00:12I was not born in Chesapeake.
00:14Well, that's on me.
00:16Are you from Paradise, California?
00:18I'm from Paradise, yeah.
00:20You know what?
00:20This is another Nate Smith, but he sounds like a nice guy.
00:23You guys kill me.
00:24I'm dead.
00:25I'm literally dead.
00:26That's a moment we'll never forget.
00:27But listen, man, whiskey on you.
00:29This debut song kind of right out the gate, taking off.
00:33Hey, I appreciate it.
00:34It's all you guys helping me out and people listening to it.
00:37I'm just thankful that people are connecting to it.
00:40Well, since a lot of people don't know a whole bunch about you,
00:43tell us a quick back story.
00:44We heard that you...
00:45Hey, because I looked at the wrong Wikipedia page.
00:47Also tell us about you.
00:48No, I mean, we know that you went to Nashville.
00:52You gave it a shot.
00:53Things weren't looking good.
00:54So you went back to California, and that's when...
00:56Rub it in, Lana.
00:57Geez.
00:57Well, I'm just reading what's off the Wikipedia.
00:59Oh, look, he's good.
01:01And then you had a tragedy.
01:03So start with that.
01:04Yeah.
01:05I still can't get over the fact that you got the wrong one.
01:07I'm dead.
01:08So, yeah, no, we did have an unexpected wildfire that happened in my hometown.
01:15I lost, and my family lost everything we've ever had.
01:17But, you know, we got through it.
01:19And, you know, it really inspired me to write more songs.
01:22And eventually my friends are like, you need to go back to Nashville.
01:25And I said no a hundred times because I'm like, I've already done that.
01:28And they did a GoFundMe for me and sent me on my way.
01:31Wow.
01:32In the middle of the pandemic, it was like, this is the best time to move, right?
01:36I mean, that's really cool of your town, though.
01:38In the middle of the pandemic.
01:39Holy cow.
01:40You know, Nate, it says that you were kind of introduced to music thanks to a youth pastor
01:45of yours, which I think is pretty interesting, because then you go into saying that some of
01:50your main influences are Garth Brooks, Tom Petty, and Fleetwood Mac.
01:53How did he respond to that after he goes, yeah, you should go into music, and then you start
01:56covering songs from them?
01:58Yeah, no, no, no.
01:59I mean, those influences were definitely earlier on, but my youth pastor was a little later
02:04in life, and honestly, church was a big influence of what I do, and I definitely put it into
02:09everything I do now, and it definitely taught me how to sing on stage and make all those
02:14mistakes that you need to make early on, you know?
02:16So, very grateful for that time.
02:18Well, give me one of those mistakes.
02:19I love learning about this, because I know you're kind of learning on the fly when you
02:22kind of get thrusted into the spotlight, and you've got to hit songs.
02:25So, what are some things that you have learned that you're like, oh, wow, I've been doing
02:27that for a long time and probably shouldn't have been doing it?
02:29Yeah, maybe have a tuner on stage.
02:32You can tune your guitar.
02:33It's usually a helpful thing.
02:35I play a whole set out of tune, and it just got awful.
02:39Another mistake is you've got to warm your voice up.
02:42You've got to drink tea.
02:43I've always hated tea.
02:45Now, I'm a tea drinker, believe it or not.
02:46JR is now a tea drinker as well, too.
02:49I'm with you on that.
02:49Do you do a throat coat?
02:50What kind of guy are you?
02:51What kind of guy are you now?
02:54I got a throat coat, and then I'm using, I bought this thing called My Pure Mist.
02:59It's a steam inhaler.
03:00I've got one of those, and I've got this other one called Vocal Mist.
03:02It's a nebulizer.
03:03So I hydrate my vocal cords every single day now.
03:06I warm up.
03:06I do my exercises every day, and that's really what it takes now, you know?
03:10Wow.
03:11Just a couple of guys from California talking about tea, baby.
03:14I love it.
03:15Talking about tea, you know what I mean, man?
03:19Absolutely.
03:19Talking to Nate Smith right now.
03:21Hey, Nate, who would you say in Nashville really kind of helped you get started on this
03:26whole journey?
03:27There's a few people.
03:28You know, one of those is Tom Beaupre.
03:30He played bass for FGL for the longest time.
03:33He plays for Luke Bryan now.
03:35He's one of those people that really helped me once I was in town.
03:38But it's like I can go back, like, man, back to my dad and mom or back to my friend Melissa
03:44who introduced me to Chief and Sign in my management.
03:47I'm so grateful for those relationships and friendships, and that's what it takes.
03:51Have you gotten any text messages or have any of the other country artists reached out
03:55to you since your song has been blowing up all over the radio?
03:59Man, I've had a few.
04:00And I've noticed that it's kind of encouraging to see these folks just reach out and encourage
04:06you.
04:06Nate, we're looking for name drops here, my friend.
04:08Come on.
04:08Hey, why not doing that?
04:09Hey.
04:10Who do we got?
04:11We want to know.
04:12Oh, my God.
04:14Look, I got BK's number.
04:16How about that?
04:16I like it.
04:18I mean, that's why you lead with that.
04:20He's a Florida boy, man.
04:21We're making the connection here.
04:22We love him.
04:23Talking to Nate Smith right now.
04:24Singles Whiskey on You.
04:26Love this song.
04:27Man, it was nice meeting.
04:28It was finally, you know, a good time to meet the real Nate Smith.
04:32That other cloud online.
04:34Forget him.
04:36But no, Nate, it was really cool getting to know you a little bit more.
04:39It sounds like you've persevered through a lot to get to where you're at right now.
04:42So it's well-deserved.
04:44You kind of did things the hard way.
04:45A lot of respect for you.
04:47Congratulations.
04:48Hey, thank you.
04:48Two things.
04:49Just want to say thank you to you guys for giving it a shot.
04:52And it means the world to me.
04:53It really, really does.
04:54And then also, what are we hanging out?
04:55That's the next question.
04:56No, you know, we get that a lot.
04:58And so we'll have to go through our phone ones as well.
05:01Oh, I see.
05:01Okay.
05:02All right.
05:02No, I'm just kidding.
05:03All right.
05:03Well, Nate, we want to be your most fun interview.
05:06And we do want to hang out with you.
05:07Yeah, absolutely.
05:08You're so fun.
05:08You're so fun.
05:09Hey, Nate, you know you made it now because QIK just did an interview with you.
05:13So you're in the big time now, Nate.
05:15Hey, you're not wrong.
05:16You're not wrong.
05:17Yeah.
05:18All right, brother.
05:19You have a great day.
05:20We appreciate you.
05:21Much love, y'all.
05:22All right.
05:22See you, man.
