00:00Hits of the 80s and more, 96.3 KKLZ, Mike and Carla Morning Show, Friday morning.
00:05So that means Jeff Howard, Vegas film critic Jeff Howard in studio.
00:09Yes.
00:09Talking about movies on the big screen, what you can watch at home, and being a holiday weekend.
00:14Jeff, this has to be huge.
00:16Oh, it's, you know, Memorial Day is the official kickoff of the summer movie-going season.
00:21All started with Jaws back in 1975.
00:23Right.
00:24And then Star Wars continued the tradition, so the movie studios saw that.
00:27We have one of the biggest movies of all time, and we have Top Gun, Maverick.
00:31Maverick.
00:32I said the best thing that could have happened to this movie was waiting two years to release it, or having to wait.
00:39Well, Tom Cruise says it belongs on the big screen.
00:41Yep.
00:41Boy, was he right.
00:42Not only did I see it, you know, a couple days ago, I saw it in IMAX, you know, and I'm telling you.
00:47Wow.
00:48Now, all the hype you've been seeing online, on the internet, and Twitter, and everything, it lives up to it.
00:53It is one of the most spectacular action films I've ever seen.
00:55And Tom Cruise is a movie star, by all means, by all definition.
01:00Yeah.
01:00It has nostalgia.
01:01It has Val Kilmer back as Iceman.
01:03It has romance with Jennifer Connelly.
01:05It has some of the most incredible action I've ever seen flying in these F-18s.
01:09And you're sitting there looking for the special effects, and like, okay, where's the trickery?
01:12And you're just like, oh, my God, I'm in the cockpit with Tom Cruise.
01:15Oh, wow.
01:15Where's the trickery?
01:17I know.
01:17Exactly.
01:17I'm not saying the trickery.
01:19Is this CGI?
01:20What is going on?
01:21And this is what I call a collective movie with the audience.
01:23You breathe with the audience, you sigh with the audience, you cheer with the audience.
01:27I mean, if you want the movie-going experience, because we've been locked up for two years,
01:30this is what the movies are all about.
01:32And see it in IMAX, right?
01:34You can, because, man, it was bigger than ever, three stories tall.
01:37It was just an amazing experience.
01:39That's good to hear.
01:39So, Jeff, let me ask you, because I don't know if a lot of people do it anymore, but after
01:43a movie like this, do they applaud?
01:45Oh, yeah.
01:46They applauded it all through the movie.
01:47Really?
01:48Oh, my gosh.
01:48Yes, it's one of those movies, and then people were mulling around afterward, you know, excited
01:52and talking about it.
01:53Wow.
01:53So, it's one of those experiences.
01:55Okay.
01:55Yeah.
01:55Did Tom Cruise ever actually go to, like, another, to a war?
01:59Was he in war?
02:00Did we find that out?
02:01Seriously?
02:02No, no, it's not a war.
02:03It's a special mission.
02:04Right.
02:04They have all these new next-generation Top Gun pilots with Miles Teller, who plays the
02:08son of Goose, you know, Anthony Edwards.
02:09Right, right, yeah.
02:10And so, he's upset with Tom Cruise, because he blames him for his father's death, so there's
02:14that tension in the Top Gun school that he has to do, and it's a mission where they destroy
02:18a nuclear reactor.
02:19No, I was just wondering if, like, in between that time and this time, maybe they had all
02:24gone off to somewhere.
02:25Oh, I see what you're saying.
02:26Okay.
02:27It's ambiguous who the bad guys are, too.
02:29So, it's not, you know, there's not a specific country, and these planes don't have
02:32any markings on them, so it's all kind of, you know, neutral.
02:35It's very politically correct.
02:36Oh, absolutely.
02:38Right?
02:38We don't want to offend anybody.
02:39Yes, yes, there's no, just fill in your villain of choice in your head.
02:44All right, what else?
02:45I mean, is there anything else?
02:47Oh, yeah, there is, absolutely.
02:48Okay.
02:49And Bob's Burgers.
02:49Oh, yeah.
02:50So, I love this cartoon.
02:52So do I.
02:52I've been watching it for years.
02:54Yep.
02:54The Belchers are back this summer on the big screen, waiting for this movie.
02:58It seems that there's a sinkhole in front of Bob's Burgers.
03:01Oh, no.
03:01Yeah, so there's all kinds of dilemma to get it fixed.
03:04It's a musical, also, so there's all kinds of great songs in the film.
03:07I love it.
03:07It looks spectacular.
03:08It's not that TV animation.
03:09It looks, you know, real A+.
03:11So check out Bob's Burgers.
03:13All right.
03:14Cool.
03:14Also, streaming on Disney+, Obi-Wan Kenobi.
03:17Ewan McGregor is back as one of the first Jedis.
03:20This is the time in Star Wars where the Jedis are being hunted down.
03:24Uh-huh.
03:24And Hayden Christensen is back as Darth Vader.
03:26You know, so it's that original Star Wars flair that I love, that I grew up with, not these new characters that I really just don't have a connection to.
03:33Right.
03:34Huge buzz on it.
03:34There's already talk of another season that Ewan McGregor wants to make another season of Obi-Wan.
03:38And so if you're a Star Wars fan, because, you know, Star Wars Celebration is going on.
03:42Yeah.
03:42Yeah.
03:42So it's just Star Wars craziness going on right now.
03:45And also on Netflix, Stranger Things 4.
03:48They're all supersized episodes.
03:51They're only showing us, I think, four or five episodes, and the rest are in July.
03:55So there's just something for everyone this weekend.
03:57And all the buzz on Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers on Disney+.
04:00Andy Samberg and John Mulaney provide the voices, and it's a blend of live action and animation.
04:06And you're like, what is this movie?
04:08And Twitter is abuzz with Chip and Dale.
04:12Yeah.
04:12So, I mean, there's so much going on to kick off the summer season in the movie and at home.
04:16This is a great time to be a movie and TV fan.
04:18I like it.
04:18I love it.
04:19Well, follow him on YouTube because that's where all the great interviews are with the stars.
04:24The directors, the picture-making people, and, of course, Facebook, VegasFilmCritic.com.
