00:18Well, it's time for this week's News You Can Use segment, brought to you by Darley,

00:32where we take a look at goings-on of racing, breeding, et cetera, in Europe with one of

00:36our TDN European editors, Emma Berry.

00:39And it's that time of year, both in our side of the Atlantic Ocean, your side of the Atlantic

00:44Ocean, where the sales are coming up, everybody's breeding, breeding season, et cetera.

00:49So who are the current hot stallions right now in Europe, Emma?

00:54Well, sort of underneath that tier of proven elite size that probably everyone is well

01:01aware of, you know, we've obviously got Dubai, Frankel, Cioni, Morton Bassett, you know,

01:08that are, you know, at their absolute peak at the moment.

01:12We've had some really interesting youngest stallions coming through.

01:15Three in particular, actually, who were, who had their first crop of classic runners last

01:20year.

01:21Blue Point, who is a son of Shamadal, and Tudan Hot, a son of Dubai, both sort of really

01:32sort of made headlines last year with a first crop classic winner for each of them in Fallen

01:37Angel for Tudan Hot and Rosalien for Blue Point.

01:40He's also the sire of Big Evs, who will be familiar to American listeners from, you know,

01:45his Breeders' Cup appearances.

01:48And also Study of Man has been a bit of a, well, I wouldn't say left field sort of entry,

01:52if you like, onto the stallion scene, but he's a son of Deep Impact, and he was a pre-jockey

01:57club winner himself in France.

01:59And he's made a really interesting start at Landweid Stubb with quite small books, and

02:03he was the sire of Calpana, who won on Champions Day last year, Group 1 winner for Juddmont.

02:09So they've been three sort of really up-and-coming stallions here that I think everyone's well

02:14aware of them in Europe now, but they'd certainly be names to note for the future, because I

02:18think they have the look that their profile is only going to get bigger and bigger as

02:24they go along.

02:26And then we've got, the assignments seem to start earlier and earlier each year for those

02:31stallions who have their first runners coming up.

02:35And already people are talking about, you know, what their two-year-olds might be doing.

02:38We've got still a couple of months to go till the turf season even starts here, but with

02:43the breeze up sales, the two-year-old sales being so influential now as well, the guys

02:48involved in that are very professional, and they're already having quite a good handle

02:52on what stallions could be looking interesting to follow for this year ahead with their first

02:58two-year-olds.

02:59We've actually got a number of, quite a large number of those coming through as well.

03:05There's Palace Pier, who's a multiple group one winning miler for Darley.

03:10He's got his first two-year-olds.

03:11I think you might see at least one of them racing over your way with Chad Brown.

03:15I believe he's got a half-brother to Chindit, who is a good horse here.

03:20There's also a half-brother to Craxman, who was a multiple group one winner as well by

03:24Palace Pier.

03:25Space Blues, good old Space Blues, who's a mighty race horse, of course, Breeders' Cup

03:30mile winner.

03:31He'll have his first two-year-olds coming up.

03:33I was on a stallion tour in Ireland over the last few days, and I saw the lovely Stallman,

03:37who's a great big horse, July Cup winner, really fast horse, but very imposing.

03:44He covered a very big first book.

03:46He's got his two-year-old runners coming up, and I think they're quite excited to see what

03:49they can do.

03:50The team at Tally Ho starred as well.

03:52So Emma, you mentioned Big Ev, who we're familiar with over here.

03:55There are some other names on the list of newly retired stallions that we're pretty

04:01familiar with here as well.

04:03Who are some of the ones you're looking forward to the most?

04:05Well, again, another big intake coming through for this year, certainly in Ireland.

04:10We've actually only got three new flat stallions in Britain this year, who are Brad Sale, multiple

04:14group one winning sprinter, Van Diek, who will be featuring in TDN this week, and Isaac

04:21Shelby, who's at New Souls Park Stud.

04:24In Ireland, a much bigger intake, and they include another horse I was lucky enough to

04:29see yesterday, Big Ev, who you just mentioned, who was looking like he really already owned

04:34the stallion yard at Tally Ho.

04:35He's certainly enjoying showing off the breeders at the moment.

04:38And then, of course, slightly at the other end of the distance scale, we've got the last

04:42two Derby winners at Cornwall, August Rodin and, of course, City of Troy, who we heard

04:46so much about last season.

04:48They've been joined by Henry Longfellow.

04:50So they've got three new stallions there, as well as Big Ev's Buccanero Fuerte and the

04:58mighty King of Steel at Tally Ho.

04:59So those two studs, just those two in Ireland, have obviously got plenty going on as well.

05:06And who else have we got that we should be mentioning?

05:10In France, of course, Big Rock and Charin, two group one winning milers.

05:14They're going to be very interesting.

05:16The French team's really sort of livening up again.

05:18They had a few quieter years, but they've got a nice intake of young stallions, including

05:23Pushkin as well, another group one winner at Ardobomont.

05:27So there's a real, I mean, I think it's a bit of a shame for Britain this year that

05:31there's such a sort of a quieter year on the new stallion front.

05:34But certainly France and Ireland are making up for that.

05:37There's sort of plenty for breeders have been, you know, out and about on the various stallion

05:41trails in the last few months and having a last few weeks, I should say, and having a

05:45good look at all of those horses.

05:47So Big Ev's is one of my favourite horses, along with King of Steel.

05:52How do we, like, I mean, you've got two totally different kind of horses.

05:57Have you been to see King of Steel?

05:58How does he look now?

06:00Because he was just a big, massive, gorgeous horse.

06:03Yeah, he really is.

06:04I mean, they're all at Tally Hoestad, where I was yesterday, in fact.

06:11Yeah, they are completely different physical types.

06:16You know, Big Ev's, despite his name, is actually quite a neat, compact horse.

06:20And he's got this great march about him.

06:22He, you know, he doesn't look like a horse who thinks he's small.

06:25Let's put it that way.

06:25He comes out and he's got a great walk and he just seems to have that great attitude.

06:31And King of Steel is, he is imposing, that's for sure.

06:36But he's very well made.

06:37He's very well balanced and put together.

06:38So, you know, you wouldn't probably, you would very much be considering the type of

06:43mares you'd send to each of those stallions.

06:47But you can't take away from King of Steel what he did on the track.

06:50He came so close to winning the Derby and then, you know, was a brilliant winner.

06:56Later in the year, Frankie DeTore, a great farewell for him in Britain in the Champions

07:02League.

07:02So he's just a really, he's a horse with a massive following.

07:07And, you know, he is big himself.

07:09But it'd be very interesting to see what his offspring are like in, you know, next year.

07:30Well, you heard Emma Berry talk about some of the stallions with first-year two-year-olds

07:34in Britain this year.

07:36They're including Pallas Peer, whose offspring includes some connections to top horses with

07:42top trainers.

07:43It's no wonder Pallas Peer's first book was so strong.

07:46And he now has 21 two-year-olds that are out of group winners.

07:50Seven of these are Group 1 winners, including Integral, Great Heavens and Speedy Boarding.

07:5726 two-year-olds that are siblings to group winners.

08:01Nine of these are Group 1 winners, including Cracksman, Anmat, Acclaim, Regional and Light

08:08Infantry.

08:0941 different known trainers, with the Gosdens and Willie Haggis having at least four two-year-olds

08:16apiece.

08:17It's going to be a very exciting year ahead indeed.
