Jake Launchbury and Tom Howell recently set up LH Equites, a business that specialises in stalls work with racehorses but also provides help with a range of behavioural issues. With a number of trainers on their books in a short space of time we caught up with the team.

00:00You can't win a race at the start but you can certainly lose it and so ensuring horses have
00:07the best education possible when it comes to the starting stalls is paramount. Jake
00:12Launchbury and Tom Howell have launched LH Equites and they specialise in horses who have issues with
00:18starting stalls as well as being able to help horses who have other behavioural issues. They
00:23recently told us about why they set up and how it's going so far. My name is Thomas Howell. I've worked
00:31in racing for most of my working life. I started off for a great guy called Michael Jarvis. I've done
00:36most things from riding to stalls and do track work here and there and yeah it's been good and
00:43set me up for a good start at the stalls with Jake. I was very lucky I managed to spend two and a half
00:50years up with Charlie Appleby working with all of his stalls horses so that gave me some great
00:55experience and he has some very talented people up there at Molten Paddocks and was able to teach me
01:01an awful lot. So I'm Jake Launchbury. I've been in the industry probably I'd say 10 years now from when
01:08I was held my license as a jump jockey. Obviously being six foot plus I was struggling with my weight
01:14and got approached by the Witherfords and ended up working for Gary for three years and obviously
01:21came up here with Craig for a few years then and then spread our wings by ourselves and me and Tom
01:26are now in a situation where we're doing it ourselves. The timing was right with myself and Jake. The
01:32opportunity was also there and I think being able to put both mine and Jake's experience together
01:37I think set us up for a good opportunity to work by ourselves you know. So we offer from anything to
01:44bad horse box loaders to stools horses, to bad breakers, ridden problems, anything remedial,
01:51anything behavioural with horses we can definitely help with. We do specialise in starting stools
01:57because that's the biggest market but yeah we range from ponies to race horses. We've done at least
02:0515 different trainers we work for. We've been to the races probably 30 times and I want to say we've got
02:1330 horses on our tracker which are horses which we'll attend to go to the races with. Even when
02:21the days aren't busy as such as going racing then we're obviously planning ahead when we can fit to go
02:26different places ie up north down to Lambourne. So there's a lot of planning in our days off but
02:33obviously that's fairly easy to do when you're in the seven o'clock at Weatherby like we were on Monday night
02:39so we have a lot of time in the car to plan stuff but yeah if we're not busy we are busy and we'll
02:44make sure we we stay busy. I think working with a horse from start to finish you know maybe picking
02:48up a horse that might be a little bit nervous or tricky or reluctant or seeing them go from that
02:54to behaving at the races and and if they go and win obviously it's a bonus so yeah it's good fun from
03:00start to finish. If you told us before we set up that we're going to have two sponsors on each
03:05done it on our kit then I would have laughed. Much appreciate the support from the likes of Jerry Reynolds
03:11and Lycets Insurance they've been a massive help.
