For trainer Kevin Attard, his first win at the Breeders' Cup with 2024 Filly and Mare Turf victress Moira was more than just a career milestone. It was the reflection of a special bond he shared with a talented horse and the pride he felt in representing his country on the world stage.
Transcript
00:01They're off in the Breeders' Cup, filling a mare turf.
00:05Moira in hand, sixth of the outside.
00:08Moira now hoops up from full count.
00:11Felicia coming to the finish.
00:13Go Canada!
00:21So I was born into a family of horse racing.
00:24Grew up grooming horses.
00:26You know, did a little bit of exercise riding them as well.
00:32And then I became my dad's AT and it just all kind of blossomed from there.
00:37I really enjoyed being with horses.
00:41I thought I had a connection with them.
00:43I really believed in myself and thought that I would be successful at what I did.
00:48It wasn't an easy road. I almost gave up.
00:51I almost quit the game.
00:53I had a young family, recently married, two young kids, bought a home.
00:58And it just wasn't paying the bills.
01:00But luckily, I got, I guess, a second chance.
01:04There were some clients that came to me and they gave me some horses, some home breads,
01:09and kind of got the ball rolling.
01:12Donato approached me about putting a group of people together to buy some Canadian breads
01:18and try to win the Queen's Plate.
01:20Moira was one of the first horses to be purchased in that group.
01:23And sure enough, as Donato said, you know, he looked for a Queen's Plate winner and we found one.
01:29The Queen's Plate is a big win for Moira.
01:32She is stunning.
01:34Wins six lengths.
01:36That was obviously, you know, just the beginning of a great journey that I think nobody could have envisioned how it would turn out afterwards.
01:47Moira ran third in the 2023 Readers' Cup.
01:50Just watching her run down the lane and being in contention, it was an unbelievable feeling.
01:57You definitely have that taste that you want to come back and obviously prove to the world that you belong.
02:04And we had unfinished business.
02:07The whole season went really well for her.
02:10But as we got closer to the Breeders' Cup, it was just something different about her, I thought.
02:15And luckily, everything just kind of went to plan.
02:20For a Canadian kid coming in from Woodbine, it was pretty, pretty surreal to watch.
02:26When I see Moira make that sort of kick, you know what I mean?
02:30The wire can't come soon enough at that point.
02:33But when it did and she was in front, braced my wife, my daughter.
02:39Moira, third time's the charm. Congratulations.
02:43Something I'll never forget.
02:45And I don't know if she knew, but she gave it all.
02:50And it was just great.
02:54You know, obviously, I miss her a lot.
02:57It was hard to see her go through that sale.
03:00She became so important in my life.
03:03And it's, you know, I mean, I feel like a sap crying, but you get so emotionally attached to these animals that I think people don't realize how much you do love them.
03:17That's her right there.
03:21When you're Canadian, it's a small list of trainers that have been lucky to win this race.
03:27So for me to be in that club in a sense, it means a lot to me.
03:33I'm one of the fortunate ones, I guess, that can claim a Breeders' Cup win.
03:38And hopefully it's the first of many more to come.
03:44And you will find a high biosphere of yours today.
03:47All again, that's the end of your life so you could be with me.
03:50You wouldn't you have seen a young in yourotic voice so you can stay.
03:52Check this out.
