The strength of the Seattle Mariners in fantasy is their starting pitching. We'll get to that
00:04
in just a minute. First, let's take a look at their offensive lineup going into the season
00:09
with, yes, Victor Robles, the former one-time hot prospect with the Washington Nationals,
00:14
sort of reinvented himself and now all of a sudden figured it out. Didn't see that one coming.
00:18
Julio Rodriguez will bat second. Cal Raleigh, one of the top catchers off the board this season
00:22
in fantasy, bats third. Then you have a Rosarena, Luke Raley, Mitch Hanager, J.P. Crawford,
00:29
Jorge Polanco, Dylan Moore. Seattle's offense, I know the former Mariner, brief Mariner,
00:36
I guess, Justin Turner, took some pot shots there at the Mariners saying they didn't do enough,
00:40
George. They should have added something here or there. Not to defend the Mariners and to go at
00:47
Turner here, but this feels like every team in baseball didn't do enough. No teams feel like
00:52
they did enough except the Dodgers and the Yankees and the Phillies and the Mets. Seattle,
00:58
we'll roll this out there. Who do you like in their lineup to start the season?
01:03
Can I just be silent? That's it? I mean, listen, I like, of course, I like Julio Rodriguez,
01:09
but generally he's the guy you don't want to draft or you want to trade for in June, right?
01:13
Because that's when he starts to hit and really beat Julio Rodriguez. Cal Raleigh, catcher, fine,
01:18
but it's catcher. He's not going to play every day. He's going to take Sundays off like they
01:23
do here. This lineup is bad. I mean, Rosarito fell off the planet last season. He just didn't
01:28
hit. It doesn't help that he went from Tampa, which is a pitcher's ballpark, and Seattle is
01:33
another pitcher's ballpark, but he didn't hit at all here and there's nobody else. Crawford is a
01:38
utility. Polanco, once again, is more of a corner infielder. I think Turner's right, by the way.
01:48
I've been bitching about the Mariners for a couple of years. I thought they needed to add
01:52
probably two bats before last season because they lost out with Hernandez and they needed to add
01:55
one anyway, and they didn't do anything. It's a shame because that pitching state was good.
02:00
We'll talk about Kirby in a second here, but Castillo, Wu, Gilbert, Miller, Kirby. I mean,
02:07
it's really, really good here, but you didn't add the hitting. You didn't help out the team here.
02:12
You can't win every game three-two. It's not possible. It's not probable. So, yeah, I've
02:18
been disappointed with the Mariners and not adding, not going for it, not getting that hit.
02:23
I really thought Alonzo would have been perfect for this team. Get that right-handed big bopper
02:28
bat in there, but I was not a peep. I probably didn't want to go there anyway. I didn't want
02:32
to go to Toronto, so I doubt he wanted to go to Seattle here, but yeah, I've been disappointed,
02:37
Greg, that they haven't added. I think they need two bats, not one. I think they need two.
02:42
Maybe even more than that, but look, I understand the sentiment. I just think it's not fair.
02:48
Couldn't we play that game with the Twins? Couldn't we play that game with the Guardians?
02:52
Couldn't we play that? I mean, there's so many teams we could play with.
02:54
But they make money. Seattle makes money. They just don't want to spend it. Twins do too,
03:00
but the Guardians maybe not. I hate it when teams are on the cusp of really being a good team.
03:07
I know. I know. Don't go for it. It just makes me...
03:10
It's disappointing. It's depressing. All right, so the strength of this rotation is no longer
03:15
because they're probably still strong. They'll just move up Bryce Miller and Brian Wu,
03:20
but George Kirby, without question, is a major red flag player going into fantasy and people
03:27
watching, what do you mean red flag? We know he's going on the IL. Okay, so let me make it
03:30
perfectly clear. Shoulder inflammation starting the season on IL for George Kirby is a player
03:36
that should not be on your radar because that means April is gone. Okay, gone. Not going to
03:41
pitch. Logan Gilbert, Luis Castillo, Bryce Miller, Brian Wu, all will be in 12 team leagues starting
03:47
a new rotation this season. But you can't just eliminate Kirby from this rotation and think it's
03:52
not going to be affected, George. That's a huge loss and a really good pitcher. Kirby was sort of
03:58
a dark horse for me from when I was so young. I really thought he could be that guy this year,
04:04
but obviously that's not going to happen. I'm going to try and be a little bit of an optimist
04:07
here, which I know is something I generally don't. I'm not, but he did want to pitch through this.
04:13
The team said, no, I'm good for the team. Let's be precautious. That being said, I think you're
04:18
right, by the way, April's done. He's going to be shut down for a couple of weeks and then they've
04:23
got to ramp him back up. So even in a perfect scenario, April's done and that's asking a lot
04:29
here. So he's, it's, you know, I'm not drafting him. I'm not. Not in a redraft league. Keeper
04:35
league and dynasty league are a little different here, but in a redraft league, I'm staying away.
04:38
It's still a good rotation though, okay, with Castillo, with Gilbert, Miller, Wu. It's still
04:43
a really good rotation. Hancock's likely taking over for Kirby here. He's all right too. The
04:48
problem is no margin for error because you need to win games three too. Once again, they don't
04:52
have the hitting to overcome this and one more injury, you're toast. It also means, by the way,
04:56
that you can't trade Castillo or unlikely to trade Castillo with somebody else for a hitter.
05:01
So it's a domino effect here.
