Live from Media Row, Super Bowl 59,
00:02
Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs.
00:05
I got a kicker here today I need to talk to.
00:07
Look at it, look at the background, beautiful.
00:09
It's Cameron Dickerts at charge.
00:10
I mean, how do you feel right there?
00:12
How do you feel?
00:13
57 yarder right there, right?
00:14
57 yarder, yep, that's the, I mean it feels good
00:17
when you make those, yeah.
00:18
Absolutely, now let's get to it.
00:19
Let's have some fun because NFL kickers I love.
00:22
I had Blake Grupio on just a couple days ago,
00:23
New Orleans Saints kicker.
00:24
I always like to get in the mind of a kicker
00:26
because you are out there alone.
00:29
What is the process?
00:30
Like, I'm 37 yarder, 47 yarder, any of them.
00:33
Like, what's the process?
00:33
Yeah, it's all the same.
00:34
You know, I run on the field,
00:36
kind of approach it from behind, run out there, run up,
00:39
and then take your same steps you do every time.
00:42
Get your spot, take your steps,
00:44
and when you give the nod, it's go time.
00:46
You kind of have the same breath, kind of,
00:47
and then nod, and then we'll go
00:49
in whatever cadence we're going.
00:50
It's just time to rock and roll.
00:51
It's unbelievable.
00:52
Now, also, do you have a kicking coach with the Chargers?
00:56
So, our assistant special teams coordinator,
00:59
Chris Gold, we call him Beep,
01:01
he is like a wizard.
01:03
He does all of that for us,
01:05
and so that's his primary role is like with specialists,
01:08
but then as well, he's been an awesome guy
01:11
for everybody in our special teams units overall,
01:14
so he's like, he's been such a big help in my kicking game
01:17
and just helping kind of correct things
01:19
throughout the season when things come up.
01:20
Now, how do you handle this too?
01:21
Because, like, being a kicker in the NFL,
01:23
you're a great athlete already,
01:25
but some people say, like,
01:26
oh, it's just a kicking position.
01:27
We don't need them until we need them.
01:29
Like, being in the locker room and that pressure on you
01:32
because the gains come down to you in every aspect.
01:36
How do you handle that?
01:37
I think it's exciting.
01:38
I mean, it's the reason why you get into this, right?
01:40
I think the guys who typically do really well
01:42
and have long careers are guys who are,
01:44
view it kind of the same way, where they're pumped.
01:47
I mean, there's a reason why I'm a kicker.
01:49
I want to do this.
01:50
This stuff I live for, so it's game-winning field goals.
01:52
It's like, the pressure's off me.
01:53
I'm there to enjoy and just, like, go do my best.
01:56
And I always like to ask this too,
01:57
because you've been around the NFL.
01:59
You kick in a dome, which you probably have to love.
02:01
Are there places that you've been around the NFL
02:03
that you say, boy, I can't get a gauge on this place?
02:08
Not crazy.
02:10
I haven't had anywhere where it's, like, really surprised me.
02:13
Our practice facility is honestly, like, the worst.
02:16
It's like, I hate kicking there, and they know it.
02:20
Like, I'm very open about it with everybody.
02:24
We're right by the ocean, and the wind just howls
02:27
in the same direction the entire time.
02:28
So I always have a right-to-left wind kick going one way.
02:32
So I kick Wednesdays and Thursdays.
02:34
So Wednesday, I kick one direction, right-to-left wind.
02:37
Thursdays, I kick left-to-right wind.
02:39
And I'm just like, this is crazy.
02:41
Then you get to game day, and you're like,
02:42
oh, I can actually aim straight, so it's wild.
02:45
Now, let me ask you this question too,
02:46
because I always love the background, too.
02:48
We know you went to Texas.
02:50
We know you're in the NFL now.
02:51
What happened in high school?
02:52
Were you always a kicker?
02:53
Did you play soccer?
02:54
Was it football?
02:55
Soccer's been my primary sport growing up, right?
02:57
So I've only played soccer pretty much forever,
02:59
then moved to the United States in 2011.
03:01
Where were you before that?
03:02
Shanghai, China.
03:03
Wow, what?
03:04
For 11 years.
03:05
Family, supply chain management.
03:06
My mom started her travel business out there.
03:08
And you speak English.
03:09
Used to be fluent.
03:10
I've lost a bunch of it.
03:11
So, like, it used to be like, it was almost,
03:14
it was like my first language,
03:15
and now it's just gone pretty much.
03:17
Okay.
03:18
But I still lie about it on resumes.
03:20
I mean, of course, I'm playing it.
03:20
Why wouldn't you?
03:21
Yeah, of course I do it.
03:22
Kicker that can talk all those languages.
03:24
And speak Chinese.
03:25
It's unreal.
03:26
I mean, that's an extra book.
03:27
Want me to be your agent?
03:28
Exactly.
03:28
We'll go ahead and get a contract and do that.
03:29
Yup, amen.
03:31
But then, just kind of growing up doing that,
03:33
and then football, everybody plays football in Texas.
03:36
So I was like, I'll play.
03:37
I was an O-lineman.
03:38
I was like, this sport sucks.
03:40
I'm not an O-lineman.
03:41
So then went to kicking, and I was like,
03:43
hey, coach, I'm just gonna kick.
03:45
This is it.
03:46
And then kicked throughout high school
03:47
and played soccer the whole way through.
03:48
Yeah, being in Los Angeles, obviously a great city there.
03:51
Harbaugh's your head coach.
03:52
Give me a little bit of the background
03:53
in the building there with Harbaugh,
03:54
because we know he's quirky,
03:55
but we know he gets the most out of his players.
03:57
Oh, yeah.
03:58
I mean, he, the best way I explain it
04:00
is he is your friend's weird dad
04:03
who's so loving and awesome
04:05
that everybody loves to be around.
04:07
And it brings that energy
04:08
of just connecting everybody together
04:10
and having so much fun.
04:12
And so it's the most fun I've ever had
04:13
playing football this year.
04:15
And they brought in a great group of guys
04:17
to make the group fun and enjoyable.
04:21
The way he loves on you and loves like Jesus loves
04:24
is just such a huge thing
04:25
that makes you want to play for him
04:27
and go play for everybody else.
04:27
And that trust and accountability is so big.
04:29
Now, also being a kicker,
04:30
you tend to move around at times.
04:32
And I did see there 2022 with the Philadelphia Eagles
04:35
who are in the Super Bowl this year.
04:37
What was your time like in Philadelphia?
04:38
I loved it.
04:39
I mean, the guys were awesome.
04:41
Being in Texas, everybody hates the Eagles
04:43
because the Cowboys.
04:44
It's true.
04:45
I gotta say, I'm the opposite now.
04:47
I am just big Eagles guy.
04:48
I think they're an incredible organization
04:50
and that their coaches have been awesome for me.
04:53
And so it was really cool when I left them
04:55
and I went to the Chargers
04:56
and had the game-winning field goal,
04:57
like Nick Sirianni texted me.
04:59
And he texted me and was like,
05:00
hey, congrats on the kick.
05:01
Like, it's really awesome to see you doing well.
05:02
That's great.
05:03
So like, forget that from a head coach.
05:04
It's like, it's a pretty cool
05:05
and it shows what the organization's like.
05:07
So rooting interest in the Super Bowl.
05:09
Can we edge you towards the Eagles?
05:10
I'm an Eagles fan.
05:11
You don't even need to edge me.
05:12
I'm a hundred percent towards the Eagles.
05:14
So there's no bone in me that wants to see the Chiefs win.
05:16
I'm over that.
05:17
That's awful.
05:19
If I ask you this question,
05:20
Cameron Dicker's lining up in the Super Bowl, 27-27.
05:24
Would you prefer the 28-yarder
05:26
or do you want the 48-yarder?
05:28
I mean, the 48-yarder is more fun for sure.
05:31
I mean, you want to have those fun ones.
05:33
It's always great when you have short kicks, right?
05:35
Like it's, you're like, ah, thanks.
05:37
And then you're kind of like
05:38
the offense stalled out down there.
05:39
And you're like, I'll take these.
05:41
But the big kicks are always fun
05:43
and it's always more memorable.
05:44
Let me ask you a question too,
05:45
because I always wonder this.
05:47
The look to the sideline.
05:48
Do you tell the coach what I'm good from from today?
05:51
How does that actually go about?
05:52
So pre-game we'll kind of go over there
05:54
after we do all of our kicking
05:55
and usually you talk to your special teams coach
05:57
and you say, hey, we're going here.
05:59
So I'll usually tell them, okay, I feel comfortable here.
06:04
If you want to go end to half, end of game scenario,
06:06
we'll extend it an extra five yards typically, maybe more.
06:09
And then it's like, you throw your body under it
06:12
and you can make it if everything goes well.
06:14
But that's more of like, I know if I don't make it
06:17
from here, that's a hundred percent on me.
06:18
Now, does icing the kicker work?
06:20
Does it work?
06:21
I don't think so.
06:22
I mean, I've had, I don't know if it's ever worked.
06:26
Has it ever worked on you?
06:27
I don't know.
06:28
I don't know.
06:28
Probably not then,
06:29
because you probably would have remembered it
06:30
right off the bat.
06:31
I mean, we kind of iced myself this year.
06:34
So like it worked when we did it to me.
06:36
I missed the kick because it was like a super weird scenario
06:39
against the Raiders.
06:40
I was literally sitting on the bench,
06:42
just vibing last game of the year.
06:44
We punted the ball.
06:45
There was a flag on the punt
06:48
and they took the 15 yard penalty
06:50
for us where he punted it from.
06:52
So all of a sudden we're in field goal range.
06:54
And so I'm sitting on the bench
06:55
and our coach is yelling field goal, field goal.
06:57
And I just ran from the bench onto the field.
06:59
And I was like, what is happening?
07:00
Three, two, one, we're live at that point.
07:02
Who decided this was a good idea?
07:04
And it was like a 55 yard field goal.
07:06
And I was like, what are we doing?
07:07
And so ran out there and missed the kick.
07:09
And I was just like, I don't even care.
07:10
Like that was just wild.
07:11
Forget about it and let it rip there.
07:12
It's great talking to you too,
07:13
because we are in New Orleans.
07:15
Any promotions that you have
07:16
or social media you want to give out there?
07:18
No, just stick with the kicker on social media.
07:20
Just trying to hopefully start a foundation here soon.
07:23
So working to-
07:25
The best, the best, you know.
07:27
Nickname.
07:27
I know, it worked out for me.
07:29
Yeah, so it worked out.
07:31
It's been incredible and it's always fun to play with.
07:33
That's Cameron Dicker down the right side here
07:35
on the floor, media row at the Superbowl.
07:37
Cameron Dicker.
07:38
Hey man, more kicks straight down the arrow for you.
07:40
Let's go.
07:41
There you go.
07:41
Thanks guys.
