Hello everyone, it's Adam Kaplan here for SportsGrid at Super Bowl 59 and the
00:04
man to my right, I saw at the Senior Bowl three years ago, he's number 85 out of
00:09
Colorado State but now with the Arizona Cardinals and in year four that's Trey
00:13
McBride. Trey, nice to see you. Yeah, thank you so much for having me on, this would be
00:16
great. All right, so let's first of all, you went against the Eagles last year.
00:19
Now, they're a big zone defense. The real Vic Fangio now is running
00:23
their defense. So as a tight end, what is the key to going up against a defense
00:27
like that? You know, it's one of those things where you got to find different
00:30
pockets to get open. You know, those man-to-man beaters aren't gonna always
00:34
be there but you got to know what what zones you're attacking, where you're
00:37
trying to get open and what the play design is and if you guys can all, you
00:41
know, work together and get into those zones together, it opens up the whole
00:44
defense. All right, so you play them last year and you guys had an incredible win
00:48
in Philly. Kind of the fans, Philly fans were not very happy. Oh, I know. As you know,
00:52
they'll boo a little bit. Yeah. You guys put up a ton of points and that was
00:56
the Fangio defense. It was before Vic got there, they've been running it. How do you
01:00
guys move the ball so well? You know, I think just getting prepared every week.
01:03
Drew Petzing, obviously we have a Kyler Murray who's, you know, he makes stuff
01:07
happen by himself but James Conner had a great game that week and obviously I
01:11
think we were just very prepared. Coming into that game, Jonathan Gannon had just
01:14
got hired from Philly so there was a lot of, you know, a lot of hate going into
01:18
that game and, you know, we were four and 13, I think, at the time and we
01:22
needed to win and it was just such a surreal moment. We had a lot of guys that
01:25
we brought from Philly. JG just came from there so it was a must-win game for
01:29
us that game. You mentioned Drew Petzing, the offensive coordinator, and you guys
01:31
do run the ball a lot. A lot of 12-person, I think? Yeah. Two tight ends. 12, 13, we do it all.
01:35
Yep, yep, yep. Give us just a bird's-eye view of that scheme, what it's like to play
01:39
in so far. It's the most fun I've ever had, man. He loves tight ends. He features
01:44
the tight end in this offense and that's something that I really appreciate out
01:47
of him. He's produced a lot of, you know, Austin Hooper, Dejoku, those are guys
01:52
that have played in his offense. So just for me to be a part of that, to me to be
01:55
featured as much as I do in that offense, it's so much fun and not only that, like
01:59
you said, we have 12 personnel. I think we led the NFL actually in 13 personnel
02:03
this last year. Wow. So they... Three tight ends. Yeah, Drew loves to put the tight
02:06
ends out there and obviously as much as we can, I love getting out there with my
02:11
guys. All right, so you're also here for, you're up for Walter Payton Man of the
02:14
Year. So let's talk about your channel Ventures here. Just give the people out
02:19
there an idea of what you've been doing off the field. Yeah, I do a lot of stuff
02:21
but the things I focus on, I work with the Boys and Girls Club a lot and
02:25
military is another thing that I focus on, but youth and military are the two
02:29
things I really focus on. It means a lot to my heart and just to give back to the
02:33
community. We have such a huge platform as athletes to give back and that's
02:37
something I really try to take advantage of and I'm just so honored that the
02:40
Cardinals had nominated me for this award and I'm excited to see, you know,
02:44
who brings it home tonight. So your work off the field, so you talk about the
02:48
military. My father was in the Navy, my nephew's in the Navy, you know, everyone
02:52
has a motivation to to give back. What was your motivation as a kid growing up?
02:56
For me, I think my parents did a great job of instilling giving back at a
03:00
young age. My mom was always involved in the community. She was always working at
03:04
a nonprofit, handing out, you know, helping with Thanksgiving dinners, wrapping
03:09
presents for families at Christmas. So I think at a young age, I just wanted to
03:14
give back. I wanted to be like her and she kind of instilled that in me at a
03:17
young age and it's just something that now I have this platform as a football
03:21
player that I can, you know, give back and be a huge part of the community.
03:24
That's great work, Trey. Well, good luck tonight. For Trey McBride, I'm Adam Kaplan.
