The pro football doc, Dr. David Chow joins us live right here on this Monday
00:05
following conference championship weekend and 13 days away from the
00:10
biggest football game of any NFL season, Super Bowl Sunday. Dr. Chow, as always we
00:16
appreciate the time bright and early on a Monday looking forward to Super Bowl
00:21
59 and how both teams will use this additional week of rest to get ready for
00:26
the biggest game of a season. Yeah, well live from surgery as you can see, sort of.
00:31
I'm not, you know, the patient's getting put to sleep here but they're not waiting for me.
00:36
Listen, a man that backs up what he is talking about live on air. Dr. Chow, of
00:42
course, one of the big stories entering conference championships Sunday, the
00:46
health of Philly's quarterback Jalen Hurts dealing with the injury to his
00:50
left knee. He was wearing a brace pregame right before they got started and the
00:55
Eagles took the field for the first time offensively as they shared on the
00:58
broadcast. That brace did come off. You watched Jalen Hurts yesterday, three
01:03
rushing touchdowns but not a ton of yardage. Did throw for nearly 254 total
01:09
touchdowns in the game but in terms of his mobility, his health, his
01:14
effectiveness, how did Philadelphia's quarterback look to you? About what we
01:19
thought that, you know, he was definitely playing but he's definitely not a
01:23
hundred percent and he could run especially straight ahead but perhaps
01:27
not as dynamic. He was mobile but I don't know that he was dynamic, typical
01:33
self, right? I mean his rush yards were way under his what is typically would be
01:38
and he threw the ball pretty well and I think they had a good game plan, Kellen
01:42
Moore. You know, obviously hard not to have a good one when Saquon does what he
01:47
does with his first couple of touches and mixed it up pretty well and obviously
01:51
very successful putting up 55 points. Yeah, absolutely. Doc, take a look at the
01:58
game yesterday. I was on my ride home and the inactives were going to be big
02:01
because Cam Juergens was having issues with his back. Worked out in the field
02:05
and I'm sure you're part of many of these conversations. They all huddled
02:07
around the general manager of the teams and he was made active but wasn't going
02:12
to start. What do you think the issue was with Cam Juergens and also what are some
02:16
of the medications that you could possibly give to a player we can play
02:19
and also understanding what it means to be inactive and not playing on game day
02:23
due to that back injury? Yeah, that's a good topic but the final thing on Jalen
02:29
Hurts is I never thought it was like a ligament structural injury. That's why
02:32
the brace maybe make him feel better. I don't know that it was completely
02:36
necessary so it didn't really surprise me he took the brace off. It probably
02:40
made him feel more dynamic. As far as Cam Juergens is concerned, there's no
02:45
video. It was a back issue and obviously he was on the active roster so he was
02:52
able to play but they thought they had a better chance shot with
02:56
Dickerson until he got hurt and he came in and played reasonably well. I
03:01
always speak about the magical healing powers of the extra week before the
03:06
Super Bowl and look the Eagles have seen it before with Terrell Owens
03:12
and his fractured ankle so to speak. So Cam Juergens, Landon Dickerson, they
03:18
get a little extra time in special healing. And the Eagles have been one of
03:22
the best offensive lines Doc all season long around the NFL so the additional
03:27
week of rest for Cam Juergens he should be back as the starting center for
03:31
Super Bowl 59 and to his side Landon Dickerson of course one of the best
03:36
interior offensive linemen in the National Football League injured his
03:40
knee. It is what Cam Juergens was forced to do coming back into the football game.
03:45
What is the prognosis for Landon Dickerson? How do these teams use the
03:49
additional week of rest and the long layoff entering a Super Bowl? Well Landon
03:54
Dickerson has torn both his ACLs in his past and right now we're searching
04:01
through some additional video to see exactly what it is and that'll give us a
04:05
better prognosis on whether he can come back. But I would lean towards yes given
04:11
that it's two weeks and given that it's the Super Bowl right now and you know
04:16
this is where the Eagles made a smart decision keeping Cam Juergens active
04:21
just in case so to speak. So you know we'll see how it goes but I think it's a
04:27
reasonable chance that he will come back and play. Doc want to talk briefly here
04:32
about the Buffalo Bills who did get eliminated yesterday but you saw
04:34
Christian Benford another concussion just getting cleared off of one. Now he
04:38
has a long offseason certainly to get healthy as he can be but talk about let
04:43
me say if he gets concussions close together if the Buffalo Bills had won
04:47
would he be automatically out for the Super Bowl in two weeks and how do you
04:51
take a look at those prognosis? Well if it were a normal situation he would
04:57
automatically be out for a month and that would include the Super Bowl. Now
05:02
is there some extra Super Bowl pressure and this that the other and you can't
05:06
judge you have to look at each case individually but the rule of thumb is
05:10
two concussions concurrently very close together you're out for at least a month.
05:15
I mean we saw Tua out for a month just with the single concussion. We saw
05:20
Chris Alave out for the rest of the season with concussions two weeks apart.
05:24
So yes he would have in theory missed anyways. So Dr. Chow one of the great
05:30
things about what you and your team do at Sports Injury Central and the work
05:33
you will find at sixscore.com S-I-C score.com is the individual six score
05:39
for each player out of a hundred. We always talk he might be 80% ready to go
05:45
or 90% effective in the game. With the additional week of rest for Jalen Hurts
05:51
Philadelphia's quarterback what do you estimate his six score will be come 13
05:56
days for now on Super Bowl Sunday in New Orleans. Well you know he was in the
06:01
yellow category different points the week he was 79 to 82 on our scale there
06:06
and I think that's about what he played but he's gonna be at least in the high
06:09
80s at this point in time from what we call yellow to maybe green yellow with
06:15
slight caution but he should be okay to go. The other interesting thing there's
06:19
rumors out there that Brandon Graham can come back and play and be his final game
06:24
as an Eagle going off of the Super Bowl. That's a pretty tight timeline triceps
06:30
tear with surgery a little over two months ago. I don't know that I see it
06:37
and being able to hold off blocks and shed blockers or be that effective but
06:43
we'll see I mean that a lot of rumors he's gonna be an activated off of IR
06:47
well why not open up his practice window create the excitement and the illusion
06:52
and it doesn't cost you a roster spot anyways until you actually activate him
06:56
off IR. You're just gonna open up his practice window and see what happens
07:00
that'll be great if he can but I'm dubious and Saquon's calf shouldn't be a big
07:06
issue. Yeah thank you for all that information doc no doubt to have BG back
07:11
in the Super Bowl prep for Philadelphia one of the leaders of that franchise.
07:16
Dr. Chow as always thank you so much.
