Live from Radio Row, SportsGrid's coverage of Super Bowl 59 continues. Joe
00:06
Lisi with Kevin Austin, a Saints wide receiver, former standout at Notre Dame.
00:11
Kevin, give me your thoughts about just the atmosphere because New Orleans is
00:15
your city and what it represents for the Super Bowl. I mean, it's a great
00:18
representation. I mean, a lot of people are excited for this opportunity for it
00:22
to be out here in the Super Bowl. I know from the city, so I'm just excited for it
00:26
to be out here. When you look at the matchup, right, we talk about history
00:30
potentially being made with the three-peat for the Kansas City Chiefs,
00:33
Pat Mahomes, Andy Reid, just dynamic in terms of these type of situations and
00:38
you have a hot team in terms of Philadelphia. This game went right down
00:41
to the wire a couple of seasons ago. How do you see this game
00:45
transpiring and the outcome on Sunday? I mean, it's gonna be really difficult for
00:49
both teams. Obviously, they're two of the best teams in the league
00:52
right now, so it's just, my opinion, it's gonna be really interesting. I think
00:56
that they're gonna get it done, the Chiefs, the three-peat. I mean, but at the
01:00
same time, I mean, I just want to see history be rewritten in a way, so I
01:04
definitely want to see that happen, but the Eagles are a really good team with a
01:08
really great offense, really great defense, so it's definitely gonna be hard
01:11
for both teams. I am curious to think that if Mahomes does get this three-peat
01:15
and picks up his fourth Super Bowl title, how some of the younger players view Pat
01:21
Mahomes compared to, say, Tom Brady, the GOAT? Yeah, I know, that's gonna be really
01:25
interesting. Like, we always have, you know, conversations, friends, group
01:29
chats, whatever it may be, just because Patrick Mahomes is young, but he's doing
01:32
so much already, so it's really interesting. I would love to see him get
01:36
the three-peat for his own personal success, but I don't know, Tom Brady, and
01:41
that's a hard name to try to beat when you're talking about the GOAT.
01:44
Right, but your team went up against the Philadelphia Eagles earlier in the year
01:49
and they struggled a little bit. That was a very low-scoring game.
01:52
Jalen Hurts did have a couple of interceptions and turnovers in that
01:56
battle. Saquon had the big run. That game really changed the complexity of the
02:01
season, though. They got through that game, and after they beat the New Orleans
02:05
Saints, they just went on a heater from that point on. Yeah, I would agree. I would
02:09
definitely agree. Anything that you saw from Jalen Hurts in the offense, what
02:14
makes them so much difficult in terms of defending them when you just look at
02:19
their playmakers? AJ, Devonta, is it just that they have playmakers at every level?
02:24
Yeah, I definitely say so, especially, you know, starting off with who you hand the
02:27
ball to every single play. I mean, I would say, like, Saquon is a game
02:31
record, so you need to focus on him, but you have a lot of other game records on
02:35
the outside as well, so I would say, like, having such a good offense and having
02:38
such a high-level, well-oiled, machined offense, it's hard to stop. When you look
02:42
at your team, your team's in the news as well, right, in terms of just looking
02:48
at Dennis Allen no longer the head coach, interim head coach. I told you, I
02:52
know Darren Rizzi from playing against him in terms of high school, but the Riz
02:56
had some some attitude, right? Your team really kicked it up a notch when
03:01
Darren Rizzi was the interim head coach. Where did he bring that organization, not
03:05
just from a special teams perspective, but when he did take over the reins for
03:09
Dennis Allen? I would definitely say, like, he took over just the fighting aspect
03:14
and bringing that to our kind of locker room in our in our room, and I know that
03:19
he's for sure just someone that's a good leader of men, and just him standing up
03:24
in front of us, talking to us every single day. I love Coach Rizzi just
03:27
because of the way that he was doing that with everybody. When you look at New
03:31
Orleans as a whole, and it's Kellen Moore potentially could be your new head coach,
03:36
and it's discussed potentially as a rebuild, do you and the players feel that
03:42
as well, or do you feel like Dennis Allen didn't bring a lot to the table at
03:46
that particular time, and maybe just coached himself out? I mean, I really
03:51
don't want to speak towards Dennis Allen and kind of his situation, but for the
03:54
most part, I would say, like, in terms of the rebuild, I don't think it's really a
03:57
rebuild just because, like, we have a lot of really good players that just got
04:01
injured, unfortunately, and so those injuries kind of took away from what we
04:06
could do offensively and defensively. When those players are healthy, I feel
04:09
like it's gonna be like how we started off in the year. You're a Notre Dame guy,
04:14
and Marcus Freeman was inches, right, you could say, right? They were so close from
04:20
winning a national championship. They went toe-to-toe, really battled in the
04:24
second half. They give up the critical third down stop to Jeremiah Smith and
04:29
Ohio State, but this was a magical season for Notre Dame. Any thoughts about the run
04:34
that Marcus Freeman has had? I'm just happy for him. I knew that was the type
04:38
of person that he was, the type of coach that he was, that he can lead like that,
04:41
and I'm just happy to see his success actually show proof because he does a
04:46
really great job just with just how he talks to young men and how he tries to
04:50
lead young men, and so I would say, like, I was really happy and proud of how he's
04:54
really been able to do this. Always a pleasure talking to you. More from New
04:57
Orleans right after this.
