Severe thunderstorms are expected to redevelop again today across eastern parts of the country.
00:06
Now this is following a high-end day yesterday that delivered giant-size hail to the Armidale
00:11
and Glen Innes areas of New South Wales and also heavy rainfall to the southern parts
00:16
of the Wide Bay Burnet.
00:18
So we'll start off straight away getting into the thunderstorm outlook.
00:22
Now this green area is where thunderstorms are possible but are not expected to be severe.
00:28
So focusing on the yellow and the red area where severe thunderstorms are either possible
00:33
or likely, that's about the northern coast of New South Wales and the adjacent ranges
00:39
spilling over the Queensland border including the Gold Coast and we've got the Wide Bay
00:43
Burnet, the Capricornia and the Central Highland and Coalfields.
00:49
Now these severe storms may bring heavy rainfall, damaging winds or large hail.
00:54
And we can't rule out high-end storms particularly through the red area here bringing giant-size
01:00
hail, so that's hail with a diameter greater than 5 centimetres or destructive wind gusts,
01:07
so wind gusts in excess of 120 kilometres per hour.
01:11
So with these types of hazards, the community impacts that could occur would include damage
01:17
to property, particularly with large or giant-size hail causing damage to cars or homes and also
01:24
the heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding may cause road closures and detours and damaging
01:31
to destructive winds bringing down trees, power lines and causing power outages.
01:36
Now as I mentioned there was some heavy rainfall about southern parts of the Wide Bay Burnet
01:41
and for that reason an initial flood warning has been issued for potential minor flooding
01:46
about the Boyne River at Denali.
01:49
Now with further rainfall and grounds really wet, the river systems will respond quickly
01:54
to any further rainfall and we're keeping a very close eye on this.
01:59
Now moving into tomorrow, much drier air will push into New South Wales clearing the storms
02:04
and as well for southern parts of Queensland with the area of severe thunderstorms possible
02:10
shifting into the central interior where heavy rainfall and damaging winds are the most likely hazards.
02:17
So if you live within any of these areas, parts of eastern Australia, then it's a good
02:23
time to keep an eye on the radar and stay up to date with our latest warnings via the
02:27
Bureau website, app and social media and as always, listen to the advice from your local
02:32
emergency services.
02:33
Bye for now.
