High temperatures and severe thunderstorms likely

Some intense weather is predicted for parts of the country as the end of November, 2023 approaches.

00:00 Hello, Miriam here at the Bureau of Meteorology with a look at the warm and stormy week ahead

00:05 for many parts of Australia.

00:07 Today we're actually in for a more settled day across the southeast of the country though,

00:12 although there is still a risk of some storms across northern NSW and southern Queensland.

00:17 They are going to be largely dry though, with very isolated rainfall totals.

00:21 In the west we've got a low pressure trough dragging in heat and moisture from the north,

00:26 and that's triggering showers and thunderstorms across large parts of Western Australia, the

00:30 Northern Territory and South Australia.

00:33 Through central parts of the country we've also got a bit of rain developing across the

00:37 Ayr Peninsula later tonight, which is going to follow through into tomorrow, extending

00:41 across South Australia, Victoria and southern NSW.

00:46 Now the rainfall totals are going to be fairly patchy through the southeast tomorrow, but

00:51 it's going to be a little bit of a greyer day.

00:55 Storms will continue across western and central parts of the country.

00:58 In fact there are risks every day this week, particularly through the afternoon and evening

01:02 period.

01:03 We may need to issue warnings each day this week, so keep an eye on the Bureau's website

01:07 for that one.

01:09 Storms in the east though are mostly going to be confined to the NSW/QLD border area.

01:14 But going into Wednesday we will start to see moisture building along the east coast,

01:19 with the risk of storms across broader areas of NSW and more onshore showers.

01:24 Through Thursday that moisture will peak, particularly through northeast NSW and southeast

01:29 QLD.

01:30 Storms may bring some locally heavy falls.

01:33 Meanwhile further into the central parts of the country this trough is continuing to trigger

01:37 those showers and thunderstorms.

01:41 By the end of the week we're going to continue to see this very similar pattern.

01:45 Some activity through central and western parts of the country tied to this trough,

01:49 and a little bit of weather clearing from the east coast as this trough moving off the

01:54 coast pushes that moisture away.

01:57 Looking at the temperatures now, we're in for cool to mild conditions across southern

02:01 parts of the state, including the south, the country, including the southeast, but a lot

02:06 of heat is going to be lingering across those inland areas, particularly through northern

02:11 NSW and southern QLD.

02:13 Temperatures are going to peak in the high 30s to low 40s through those areas as the

02:17 week goes on.

02:18 And towards midweek we're going to see that heat picking up across the northern Territory

02:22 and northern WA as well.

02:25 In fact by Thursday we'll see a little bit of an easing in conditions through NSW, but

02:30 very very hot across inland QLD in particular, following through to the end of the week.

02:36 Now this persistent heat is actually going to trigger low intensity heatwave conditions.

02:41 For the Monday to Wednesday period we're going to see those low intensity heatwave conditions

02:46 across southern QLD.

02:48 But through Tuesday to Thursday they'll start to extend into parts of the northern Territory

02:52 and western Australia as well.

02:55 And by the Wednesday to Friday period we're actually seeing small pockets of severe intensity

02:59 heatwave conditions.

03:01 So this is telling us that we need to be aware of the heat, we need to stay cool, stay hydrated

03:06 and stay indoors where we can.
