CSIRO releases climate adaptation strategies to support wildlife conservation amid climate change challenges in Australia

Climate change is making it harder for already threatened species to survive in Australia. To support conservation efforts, the CSIRO has made hundreds of climate adaptation strategies for wildlife available to the public.

00:00Near the Great Barrier Reef, a unique conservation solution is being tested, irrigating artificial

00:08green turtle nests with seawater to combat rising sand temperatures which are causing

00:13all of the hatchlings to be born female.

00:16Interventions are becoming more common in this sort of conservation space.

00:21It's just one of over 400 creative solutions included in a CSIRO project to address climate

00:28threats to Australian wildlife.

00:30We think it's something that can inspire hope in terms of these really rapid changes that

00:37we're seeing in terms of climate impacts.

00:40The ADAPT Log project includes diverse solutions from artificial shy albatross nests off the

00:45coast of Tasmania to sprinkler systems installed in trees to protect flying foxes from extreme

00:51heatwaves in Victoria and fireproof nesting boxes for the endangered greater glider in

00:57New South Wales.

00:59This is a way that people can share the stories of what they're doing, what they're testing,

01:03what they're learning with each other.

01:06Aiming to save time and money for new conservation projects as the world continues to heat up.

01:12We just saw records shattered in terms of global temperatures in 2023 and 2024.

01:18We don't know everything about climate change, there's a lot of uncertainty, so it's a really

01:23difficult threat to manage.

01:25The CSIRO says the cost of fully recovering Australia's vulnerable species would be over

01:30$580 billion per year.

01:34Paying that cost isn't realistic, but other solutions like direct intervention are becoming

01:39more common.

01:40Because things are getting a lot worse in a lot of places and for a lot of species,

01:46it's really important to be testing these novel and innovative approaches now.

01:50A platform like this does give me hope.

01:53Providing a roadmap for an emerging field of conservation.
