Australia Post increases security after mail stolen in series of post office raids in Melbourne

Australia Post is upping its security after mail was stolen during a series of raids at a Melbourne post office.

00:00I am at the GPO in Bourke Street here in the Melbourne CBD.

00:08Now, Australia Post have released a statement today regarding the four break-ins and stolen mail.

00:15They have said that the offenders were able to force entry into the back-of-house area

00:21used for sorting mail and distributing letters into PO boxes on three occasions

00:26and on the fourth left immediately when deterred by additional security measures.

00:31The offenders caused significant damage on entry into the facility which promptly has been repaired

00:38and additional security members were put in place after each break-in.

00:43Now, the postcode here is 3000.

00:46Essentially, these break-ins have an impact of thousands of businesses that use this GPO box spot here in the CBD.

00:57Also, Mercer Super have been contacting their members over the last 24 hours.

01:03They have 1.6 million customers Australia-wide.

01:07We're yet to find out how many customers have been affected by these break-ins.

01:13We've also reached out further to Australia Post just to try and find out

01:19how many customers that are using this P.O. box have been affected

01:24and potentially have there been any other break-ins across Australia.
