Sunny for most with showers predicted for east coast

00:00Hello and Happy New Year from the Bureau.

00:02Today's the 2nd of January and yesterday,

00:05the first day of the year,

00:06brought us severe thunderstorms and flash flooding

00:08for parts of Queensland,

00:10intense heat in Western Australia,

00:12even a beautiful aurora visible from southern areas

00:15overnight last night.

00:16But in between all of that,

00:18there was plenty of settled,

00:20sunny, fine weather across the country

00:22and that's really the trend that is continuing

00:24as we look ahead to the weather forecast for Friday.

00:27And this high pressure over here,

00:29east of Bass Strait,

00:30is really controlling conditions

00:32across the eastern half of the country.

00:33It will push showers onto the northern New South Wales

00:36and Queensland coast,

00:38but by the same token,

00:39will bring fine weather over inland parts of those states,

00:42as well as fine and warming weather

00:44across South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania.

00:47Meanwhile, on the western side of the country,

00:49a cooler wind change has moved through,

00:51which will be welcome relief

00:52after the very hot weather there in recent days.

00:56Let's fly around the states

00:58and it has been very stormy over the last few days

01:00for central Queensland,

01:01but on Friday, the peak of the storm activity,

01:04the most widespread and vigorous storms

01:06are expected to move out to the east coast,

01:08particularly between Rockhampton and Cairns,

01:11where we could see some severe thunderstorms

01:13that may bring heavy rain and flash flooding

01:16along this stretch of coast here.

01:17Further south across the southeast,

01:19storm risk looks low,

01:21but a few showers expected around Brisbane

01:23and the rest of southeast Queensland.

01:25Not too much rain there,

01:26with plenty of sunny breaks as well.

01:29Inland, it is hot, sunny and dry.

01:32We've seen a lot of storms

01:33across New South Wales recently as well,

01:35but the area of storms on Friday

01:36is shrinking away to the north.

01:38We could still see some thunderstorms

01:40over the northern Tablelands and the northern rivers,

01:43potentially north of about Coffs Harbour,

01:45but the storm risk is way down everywhere else.

01:48A couple of showers possible

01:49for the central and southern coastline,

01:51lots of clear, dry breaks of weather

01:54throughout the day on Friday for those areas,

01:56with just minimal rainfall totals expected,

01:58but temperatures are a good few degrees cooler

02:01than the usual January maximums,

02:03a high of 26 in Sydney.

02:05It is warm inland though,

02:0630 for Canberra and 35 to 37 for many western parts.

02:11A clear sunny day expected on Friday

02:13right across Victoria,

02:14a touch of a chilly morning,

02:16but the afternoon highs really warming up nicely,

02:1829 across Melbourne,

02:20mid-30s for northern parts of the state.

02:24And a little bit of a chilly morning for Tasmania,

02:26about five or six degrees in some areas,

02:28then a cracking day of clear, summery weather.

02:31Temperatures into the mid-20s.

02:33If you're hoping for rain,

02:35there is nothing there for you on Friday, I'm afraid,

02:38but other than that,

02:39the weather should not disrupt any plans at all.

02:43South Australia starting to warm up again on Friday,

02:45the first real wave of heat for the year coming on Friday,

02:49then continuing into the weekend.

02:50So we'll see temperatures from the mid-30s

02:53to the low 40s across the state.

02:55That will bring us some elevated fire danger

02:57across many areas,

02:59potentially extreme fire danger

03:01around the Mount Lofties near Adelaide,

03:03with a bit of increased wind across that region.

03:06And out to Western Australia now,

03:08slightly cooler southwest winds

03:10across the southwest land division here.

03:13Brings temperatures back into the high 20s

03:15after they have been in the high 30s for the last few days.

03:19So a nice, pleasant day around Perth.

03:21Generally across this part of Western Australia,

03:23very little rainfall on Friday,

03:25maybe a couple of millimetres around the south coast,

03:27particularly Esperance,

03:29and one or two storms could develop

03:31across the southern interior here,

03:33as well as around the far northwest,

03:34but very scattered rainfall,

03:36with most places seeing nothing at all.

03:39And for Northern Australia on Friday,

03:41an actual increase in storm activity

03:43across the top end of the Northern Territory

03:46through Friday afternoon.

03:48That could bring areas of heavy rain and flash flooding

03:51around the Northern NT,

03:52but it will also bring temperatures down a couple of degrees

03:55after we have seen heatwaves there

03:57over the last week or so.

03:59Elsewhere across the central and southern desert areas,

04:02no such rain is coming.

04:04It's another hot, dry day there

04:05with temperatures of around 40 degrees,

04:07and humid without much rain for Northern WA.
