Hello and Happy New Year from the Bureau.
00:02
Today's the 2nd of January and yesterday,
00:05
the first day of the year,
00:06
brought us severe thunderstorms and flash flooding
00:08
for parts of Queensland,
00:10
intense heat in Western Australia,
00:12
even a beautiful aurora visible from southern areas
00:15
overnight last night.
00:16
But in between all of that,
00:18
there was plenty of settled,
00:20
sunny, fine weather across the country
00:22
and that's really the trend that is continuing
00:24
as we look ahead to the weather forecast for Friday.
00:27
And this high pressure over here,
00:29
east of Bass Strait,
00:30
is really controlling conditions
00:32
across the eastern half of the country.
00:33
It will push showers onto the northern New South Wales
00:36
and Queensland coast,
00:38
but by the same token,
00:39
will bring fine weather over inland parts of those states,
00:42
as well as fine and warming weather
00:44
across South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania.
00:47
Meanwhile, on the western side of the country,
00:49
a cooler wind change has moved through,
00:51
which will be welcome relief
00:52
after the very hot weather there in recent days.
00:56
Let's fly around the states
00:58
and it has been very stormy over the last few days
01:00
for central Queensland,
01:01
but on Friday, the peak of the storm activity,
01:04
the most widespread and vigorous storms
01:06
are expected to move out to the east coast,
01:08
particularly between Rockhampton and Cairns,
01:11
where we could see some severe thunderstorms
01:13
that may bring heavy rain and flash flooding
01:16
along this stretch of coast here.
01:17
Further south across the southeast,
01:19
storm risk looks low,
01:21
but a few showers expected around Brisbane
01:23
and the rest of southeast Queensland.
01:25
Not too much rain there,
01:26
with plenty of sunny breaks as well.
01:29
Inland, it is hot, sunny and dry.
01:32
We've seen a lot of storms
01:33
across New South Wales recently as well,
01:35
but the area of storms on Friday
01:36
is shrinking away to the north.
01:38
We could still see some thunderstorms
01:40
over the northern Tablelands and the northern rivers,
01:43
potentially north of about Coffs Harbour,
01:45
but the storm risk is way down everywhere else.
01:48
A couple of showers possible
01:49
for the central and southern coastline,
01:51
lots of clear, dry breaks of weather
01:54
throughout the day on Friday for those areas,
01:56
with just minimal rainfall totals expected,
01:58
but temperatures are a good few degrees cooler
02:01
than the usual January maximums,
02:03
a high of 26 in Sydney.
02:05
It is warm inland though,
02:06
30 for Canberra and 35 to 37 for many western parts.
02:11
A clear sunny day expected on Friday
02:13
right across Victoria,
02:14
a touch of a chilly morning,
02:16
but the afternoon highs really warming up nicely,
02:18
29 across Melbourne,
02:20
mid-30s for northern parts of the state.
02:24
And a little bit of a chilly morning for Tasmania,
02:26
about five or six degrees in some areas,
02:28
then a cracking day of clear, summery weather.
02:31
Temperatures into the mid-20s.
02:33
If you're hoping for rain,
02:35
there is nothing there for you on Friday, I'm afraid,
02:38
but other than that,
02:39
the weather should not disrupt any plans at all.
02:43
South Australia starting to warm up again on Friday,
02:45
the first real wave of heat for the year coming on Friday,
02:49
then continuing into the weekend.
02:50
So we'll see temperatures from the mid-30s
02:53
to the low 40s across the state.
02:55
That will bring us some elevated fire danger
02:57
across many areas,
02:59
potentially extreme fire danger
03:01
around the Mount Lofties near Adelaide,
03:03
with a bit of increased wind across that region.
03:06
And out to Western Australia now,
03:08
slightly cooler southwest winds
03:10
across the southwest land division here.
03:13
Brings temperatures back into the high 20s
03:15
after they have been in the high 30s for the last few days.
03:19
So a nice, pleasant day around Perth.
03:21
Generally across this part of Western Australia,
03:23
very little rainfall on Friday,
03:25
maybe a couple of millimetres around the south coast,
03:27
particularly Esperance,
03:29
and one or two storms could develop
03:31
across the southern interior here,
03:33
as well as around the far northwest,
03:34
but very scattered rainfall,
03:36
with most places seeing nothing at all.
03:39
And for Northern Australia on Friday,
03:41
an actual increase in storm activity
03:43
across the top end of the Northern Territory
03:46
through Friday afternoon.
03:48
That could bring areas of heavy rain and flash flooding
03:51
around the Northern NT,
03:52
but it will also bring temperatures down a couple of degrees
03:55
after we have seen heatwaves there
03:57
over the last week or so.
03:59
Elsewhere across the central and southern desert areas,
04:02
no such rain is coming.
04:04
It's another hot, dry day there
04:05
with temperatures of around 40 degrees,
04:07
and humid without much rain for Northern WA.
04:11
So if you wanna see how the weather continues
04:13
through Friday and into the weekend,
04:14
find your local forecast on the Bureau website and app.
04:17
Thanks for watching.
04:18
Have a great day.
