So, we're here in Darwin at the 50th anniversary commemoration event for Cyclone Tracy, which
00:08
is a storm that devastated Darwin in 1974, killing 66 people across the coast Christmas
00:16
morning.
00:17
Many people weren't expecting it and many people who live in Darwin today and across
00:21
Australia still feel very raw emotion surrounding what happened on that day.
00:28
They want to remember and for this event 2,000 people are expected, there's going to
00:33
be a military band playing, there's going to be some speeches from survivors, but there's
00:39
also a protest outside which is important to mention.
00:43
A lot of survivors are really unhappy about a monument which is part of this commemoration.
00:48
We had some federal government money put towards it.
00:50
It's designed by a New Zealand artist, Phil Price, but a lot of survivors are saying that
00:56
it doesn't represent a memorial for them, that they would have liked to have seen something
01:02
that was a bit more personal to them, perhaps by a local artist.
