Darwin still marked by Cyclone Tracy, 50 years on

00:00The people that met us were the Red Cross and the Salvation Army and it was kind of

00:06funny because they ran out and they were wanting to hug us and in our culture

00:11that just doesn't happen you know and going up in Darwin where there were not

00:15a lot of elderly non-Aboriginal people and and having them running toward us

00:22and we had been always taught don't ever go near strangers don't let people you

00:27know we don't hug except people we know and they were running up and trying to

00:31hug us and we were running backwards but they took such kind they were so kind

00:37and they took such good care of us those kinds of things can impact on someone's

00:43lives when they are in despair and that's what people did for us when we

00:49were in Adelaide when we were the refugees and had nowhere to go and

00:54people were so kind and and that's something that I believe was reinforced

01:01for me because of Cyclone Tracy yes we went through all the devastation you

01:09know we lost our home we lost our pets we had nothing but we had a whole

01:15country of people we didn't know and I'm talking about Aboriginal non-Aboriginal

01:22people the whole country supporting us from our country in Darwin
