00:00The United States on Wednesday, November 20, vetoed a UN Security Council resolution for
00:05a ceasefire in Israel's war in Gaza.
00:08The resolution called for an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire and separately demanded
00:13the release of hostages.
00:15Out of the 15-member council, only the U.S. voted against, using its veto as a permanent
00:20council member.
00:21The resolution was put forward by 10 non-permanent members.
00:25The U.S. had said it would only support a resolution that explicitly calls for the immediate
00:29release of hostages as part of a ceasefire.
00:32U.S. officials accused council members of rejecting attempts at reaching a compromise.
00:37Israel's 13-month campaign in Gaza has killed nearly 44,000 people and displaced the population
00:42many times.
00:44It was a response to an October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas in Israel that killed 1,200 and captured
00:50250 hostages.
