I always love talking to coach Terry Bowden on Fridays.
00:05
You got to check out the Bowden Blitz on SportsGrid.
00:08
It's badass and you can follow it at the Bowden Blitz, a legendary career, a legendary family
00:16
and a badass on coast to coast.
00:18
Coach, I want to start with what you and I were just talking about.
00:20
So you know, when Bear Bryant was there in Tuscaloosa, and then when Nick Saban was in
00:28
Tuscaloosa, they had it.
00:30
They had it.
00:31
I mean, like the it thing that we're talking about.
00:34
And then they had seven coaches that didn't have it.
00:37
And then I don't have anything bad to say about DeBoer.
00:41
I just know that that football team doesn't have it.
00:44
No, and you're exactly right.
00:47
That's a unique place.
00:48
And having coached at three universities in Alabama and having coached against the Crimson
00:54
Tide, I have a great feel for it.
00:57
It's hard to be the head coach in Alabama because they can sense it.
01:01
It's a unique personality and the players and the team are a part of that team.
01:07
And so Bear Bryant, then seven coaches, then Nick Saban.
01:11
And I've said before that DeBoer was a really good choice.
01:14
I just want to see how you would react to it.
01:17
And right now, I don't think they can go into LSU and beat LSU at night.
01:21
I just don't think, see that Alabama team doing that.
01:25
I mean, this guy Kelly, his best work has been under the lights at Death Valley and
01:33
not during the sunshine.
01:34
In the daytime, they've been beatable.
01:36
At nighttime, they've been unbeatable.
01:39
I tell you, I've coached there in the nighttime a lot.
01:42
It's almost impossible to win.
01:44
The crowd gets bigger.
01:46
They get louder.
01:47
It's a tough place.
01:48
I think they've been drinking all day, but they are hard to beat.
01:52
I've been there with Florida State.
01:54
I've been there with Auburn.
01:55
And I'm telling you, it's the most unique place you've ever seen.
01:58
They say Texas A&M too, and I've coached there as well, is about the same.
02:03
But I don't think at night, there's any stadium tougher to beat.
02:06
And I don't think Alabama is going to win this one at LSU this week.
02:09
Listen, I've been to both.
02:12
And I will give you that Kyle Field is unique, and it's the 12th man and all the rest, and
02:19
they got a big crowd and a lot of people there.
02:22
But it cannot, I'm sorry, it cannot hold a candle to Death Valley.
02:27
Let's stop here.
02:28
I mean, I'm not at Kyle Field.
02:31
I got seven or eight stadiums better than that.
02:33
I'll be here all day.
02:34
I'm here all the week.
02:36
I'll tell you better places to play football.
02:38
And you know it.
02:40
You know it.
02:41
Well, you know, like I say, I live in Louisiana now.
02:45
I've coached at ULM.
02:47
I've been here and I coached against them.
02:51
And I have coached at so many places.
02:53
I have been to Michigan.
02:54
I've been to Southern California, to Alabama, to Georgia.
02:59
It's a unique experience there.
03:01
I do have to think it's something to do with the personality of the Cajuns and the way
03:06
they react at night.
03:09
It's an incredible experience.
03:11
And I don't think Alabama, I think, I mean, Alabama is a good football team.
03:13
I don't think they're as good as LSU right now.
03:16
If LSU can get rid of throwing, if they can run the football just a little bit, I think
03:20
they win the game.
03:21
All right.
03:22
Let's talk about Miami and Georgia Tech.
03:25
Now listen, this game reminds me of the Duke game.
03:28
I don't think, you know, Duke was 6-2.
03:30
They're better than Georgia Tech.
03:31
Georgia Tech's been very average this year.
03:34
They've had their problems.
03:35
And I know everyone thinks they're going to beat Miami, but Duke went up on Miami and
03:39
then they got their ass spanked.
03:42
Now I think this team may throw a 10-minute punch, but I still don't think they can stop
03:47
this freight train.
03:48
No, I mean, I mean, I mean, you're talking about Cam Ward is the number one quarterback
03:52
in the country, stat-wise.
03:54
They have the number one offense in the country.
03:56
And I think a team like Georgia Tech, whose quarterback is injured, who may not play,
04:02
their day is over.
04:03
They started the season with a win over Florida State, but they have not progressed throughout
04:07
the season.
04:08
And a team that likely don't have their quarterback in Miami is smelling that playoff.
04:13
They're smelling that championship.
04:15
And I think the more this thing goes in the season, the better Miami gets.
04:19
Were you surprised that the AD said that Billy Napier was coming back to Gainesville?
04:26
And I think they're going to get beat in Austin at Memorial by the Longhorns.
04:31
But do you think they're making the right choice in bringing him back?
04:34
Because the bottom line is he's been there and all he does is lose.
04:38
You know, it's funny.
04:39
He was with me at Auburn.
04:40
He was, he was the assistant AD when I was at Auburn, and I'm not so sure he makes the
04:44
final decision.
04:45
I just, I've been around this business too long and ADs don't make that final call.
04:51
They're told what to do.
04:53
Now you want to say, we're with you, do the best that you can, but I'm not so sure he's
04:59
going to make the final call at Florida.
05:01
So let's just wait and see, because there's a lot of things and a lot of factors that
05:05
come involved.
05:06
Texas beat them easily?
05:09
Texas is going to, the only thing with Texas this year is a matter of how much they're
05:13
going to win against them.
05:14
I think Texas is going to win the game.
05:17
It's just, can you go with 21 points?
05:19
I'll be honest with you.
05:20
They've got a walk-on quarterback playing at quarterback for Florida, and I think Texas
05:24
gets the 21.
05:25
I think they, they, they take the spread and they go with it.
05:27
Yeah.
05:28
I do too.
05:29
Once they lost their quarterback Langway, they're in trouble.
05:31
Georgia at Ole Miss.
05:33
I think Georgia is the most dangerous team in that 12 team field.
05:37
They can beat anybody.
05:38
Well, you got it.
05:39
Georgia is, I mean, I mean, they're really something, Ole Miss and Georgia.
05:43
It's a, it's going to be a great game.
05:45
I still wonder about Ole Miss when they play the better team.
05:48
Georgia continues to play better and better.
05:51
But their quarterback, Carson Beck has thrown interceptions.
05:55
He's not been the quarterback that he was last year.
05:58
He has got to keep turning the ball over.
06:00
I know he's heard about it all week, but I think he will solve that problem.
06:04
I don't think you'll see him throwing interceptions like he did three of them last week.
06:08
And if he doesn't throw interceptions, I don't think Georgia, anybody can beat Georgia.
06:12
So I was watching the Indiana game last week, as you know, my alma mater, and I always went
06:17
there for basketball.
06:18
I worked for Bob Knight.
06:19
I never once went to a football game in five years.
06:22
Now all of a sudden they're good.
06:24
I mean, they mean business offensively, 47 plus a week defensively, top five in the country
06:31
at everything, stopping a run, giving up yards, giving up points.
06:35
So they took a punch from Michigan State and then beat the living snot out of them in East
06:40
Lansing.
06:41
And I don't even think Michigan's very much better than Michigan State.
06:44
What happens in Bloomington tomorrow?
06:46
But you know what?
06:47
I don't question who's going to win this game.
06:50
I question where Kurt Cignetti is going to be next year or the year after.
06:54
Oh, God.
06:55
Oh, God.
06:56
Who would have thought Michigan would be going into Indiana and an underdog after winning
07:03
the national championship.
07:05
And so I know Kurt Cignetti, I've known him all my life.
07:08
And I'm thinking this guy is going to go somewhere very quick.
07:12
Oh, God.
07:13
You know, my day was going great and then you had to come along and kick me in the teeth
07:18
like a horse.
07:19
Let's talk about Colorado.
07:21
I think they're in trouble in Lubbock.
07:23
I thought that Texas Tech win at Aims last week was the best football game I watched.
07:27
Well, they are.
07:28
I'm going to tell you, Texas Tech has got them on a roll right now.
07:31
Now they are a great passing team and Texas Tech's weakness is in pass defense.
07:37
But I really think when you go into Lubbock and you play them right now, I think you got
07:41
to roll with Texas.
07:42
I think Texas Tech, they have a lot of confidence right now.
07:44
They won a great game last week.
07:46
And I see them beating Colorado in Texas Tech in Lubbock.
07:50
I think BYU goes to Rice-Eccles and sucker punches the Utes.
07:55
I think they're real average.
07:57
And I think BYU is fun.
07:59
No, no, BYU, yeah, BYU is the story of the year, I think, in that conference, because
08:04
Utah was going to be there.
08:06
They were going to be the conference contenders, a chance to play for the national championship.
08:12
But it's all been about BYU.
08:13
And I don't see them losing this game.
08:15
This is a great rivalry.
08:17
But BYU has all the momentum.
08:19
And I would ride that the entire season.
08:22
I would ride BYU.
08:23
Obviously, Penn State is back to playing teams that they'll cover against.
08:28
They can't beat good teams or highly ranked teams or Ohio State, but they can beat Washington's
08:33
ass.
08:34
You know, I went to West Virginia and our rival, we pitted Penn State.
08:39
We just couldn't believe it.
08:41
But I don't know if they'll win.
08:43
I think they'll win that game.
08:44
I will say this.
08:45
But this is another year of Paul Thurston.
