I always love every week talking to Coach Terry Bowden.
00:06
You can catch the Bowden Blitz podcast.
00:08
It's badass.
00:09
You can follow him on X at the Bowden Blitz and everyone knows what he's accomplished
00:15
as a coach.
00:16
We love him talking college football on Coast to Coast every week.
00:20
Coach, you know, I got to start with that Canes game in Berkeley down 35 to 10 and what
00:27
Cam Ward pulled out of his arse to win that game.
00:32
I'm sorry.
00:33
That puts him back on top in the Heisman for me.
00:37
The kid Jenny's been unbelievable.
00:38
They're not giving the Heisman to some kid at Boise State unless he runs for 4,000 yards.
00:42
I'm sorry.
00:43
So for me, it's Ward and Hunter 1-2.
00:48
I'm all in.
00:49
I think that's the 1-2 rate it's going to go at Cam Ward.
00:51
I think he's the best in the country and he's the best at leading his team.
00:55
No team in America depends on their quarterback as much as Miami.
00:59
That's good and that's bad, but he is by far the best.
01:02
He can do about anything with the ball.
01:04
There's nothing he can't do.
01:05
I'm a little bit concerned about some of the judgments decisions he makes early.
01:09
It's almost like he's baiting the other team to get a little bit of a lead.
01:12
He gets himself in trouble doing some poor like he threw an interception right after
01:16
halftime.
01:17
It was just up for grabs and you know he knew that was a bad judgment, but he is so talented,
01:22
so good.
01:23
It's kind of like Brett Favre.
01:25
You got to take the good with the bad.
01:26
When you get a great one, you got to take the good with the bad.
01:28
Honestly, that game, I thought my, I thought I was going to have another heart attack.
01:33
I've already had one.
01:34
I thought I was going to have another one.
01:35
Like I was losing my mind.
01:37
All right, tonight we got Utah ranked going into Tempe to take on a tough Arizona State
01:44
team that's 4-1 as well.
01:47
They're laying five and a half to Utes.
01:50
I'll tell you that the Utes with Cam Risen, I think Risen is expected to start.
01:55
He was the reason they were picked preseason to win the conference.
01:58
They got annihilated by BYU, but he's back supposedly healthy.
02:03
I don't think they would play him if he wasn't healthy, but Arizona State has a great running
02:07
attack.
02:08
If they can keep Utah off the field and keep Cam Rising on the bench where he's been the
02:11
last three or four weeks, they can come back and win things, but I'm going with Utah tonight
02:16
against the spread.
02:17
Yeah, I'm with you.
02:18
I really, I think they'll get it.
02:20
They always own Arizona State.
02:23
It's just inevitable.
02:24
All right, the Red River tomorrow in Dallas at the Cotton Bowl, Texas and Oklahoma.
02:30
I got to tell you, Coach, based on history, that number is too big for me.
02:35
Yeah, I think it's too big for me too.
02:37
The fact that the only way Oklahoma could win because they don't have much offense is
02:41
to play great defense, keep their run the football, although they're not going to score
02:45
very much, keep Texas offense off the field because they've got too many weapons offensively
02:50
at Texas.
02:51
So Oklahoma doesn't have ability to score a lot of points there.
02:54
And I should know Zach, Zach Alley, the offensive defense coordinator at Oklahoma was my defensive
03:00
coordinator at ULM and AJ Million Way, the quarterback coach at Texas was my coordinator
03:05
for nine years.
03:06
And so I know a little bit of insight there, but I think Texas offense is more than Oklahoma's
03:12
defense and that's who's going to have to win the game.
03:15
Listen, they've treated yours poorly before that Oklahoma defense.
03:19
I remember a game, he had three turnovers against them and they racked him and he's
03:25
been out.
03:26
Do you think there'll be any return to that?
03:28
Well, I'm thinking that's part of growing up, probably learning how to be a quarterback.
03:32
What is he, a seven year veteran?
03:34
He's been there forever and he's done a great job, but he's a veteran now.
03:37
He's more experienced.
03:38
I don't see him making those kinds of mistakes in a game like this.
03:43
So tomorrow and Eugene at Outson Stadium, beautiful spot, tough place to play.
03:49
But if anyone can do it, it's this Ohio State team, man, are they stacked.
03:58
So I think we lost coach at some level here, coach, do I have you?
04:03
I got you now.
04:04
What was that?
04:05
So I was saying, if anyone can beat Oregon at Outson, it'd be this Ohio State team.
04:10
They're so loaded.
04:11
Yeah.
04:12
You know, I can't, I'm really a fond of Oregon, I play for Oregon and that stadium, Outson
04:16
Stadium.
04:17
I've been there.
04:18
I coached there.
04:19
I've broadcasted games at the stadium.
04:20
It's not that big, but it's right on the field.
04:22
There's no room between the stands and the field or side by side.
04:26
It's a great environment to play if you're Oregon.
04:29
But man, if you can beat Ohio State, you're better than the Big Ten because Ohio State
04:33
to me has the most talent of anybody in the country.
04:36
There may be the best team in the country.
04:37
They just haven't played anybody.
04:39
I don't think people know what they're getting, but they're going to know this weekend.
04:42
But Ohio State to me, best talent, best team in the Big Ten.
04:47
And I don't believe it.
04:48
I think Oregon fits right in with the Big Ten, but I don't believe right now we're going
04:51
to see them be number one of the Big Ten this Saturday.
04:54
All right.
04:55
How about Ole Miss at Death Valley against LSU?
04:58
That's going to be a great game.
04:59
Tough place to play under the lights.
05:02
That's the toughest place I've ever coached.
05:03
I've been there about seven times coaching with my dad, four times, three times when
05:07
I was at Auburn.
05:09
It's the most intimidating home field environment, and at night, and Brian Kelly, the head coach,
05:15
he's not lost at night.
05:16
He's 12-0 at night, has not lost since he's been there.
05:20
But you know, this is the 100th anniversary of their stadium, and they have added millions
05:24
of dollars worth of jumbotrons and lights and strobe lights, and I'm going to be honest
05:29
with you, that's the one place where I have to give the home field advantage a lot of
05:33
points because I think that's the difference in these two games.
05:35
The other thing being, LSU was off last week.
05:38
They're healthy.
05:39
They've got their players all healthy to go.
05:41
Ole Miss has been beat up in some tough games.
05:43
Trey Harris, their star receiver, I don't think he'll play, and so I like LSU, again,
05:48
to beat the team and beat the spread.
05:50
Yeah, I'm with you, Coach.
05:52
K-State going to Boulder to take on Primes-Buffaloes.
05:56
Yeah, I'm a Deion fan.
05:59
I just always – Deion took one of the toughest jobs in American football.
06:03
Can he be a great Division I coach?
06:05
If he'd have taken a great Division I program, I bet you'd see a lot more, but he's done
06:09
a great job at Colorado, but they don't have – again, the athletes that keep going.
06:13
Kansas State, again, has just got the conference's best team.
06:16
I think I would pick them.
06:18
The one thing Deion is not doing, he still doesn't have a running attack, and once you
06:22
get against your better opponents, you've got to run the football to keep the pressure
06:26
off your quarterback.
06:27
They've got a great quarterback.
06:28
Shadur Sanders is an outstanding quarterback.
06:31
He's not going to be a first-round draft pick, and probably will be, but you've got
06:34
to get pressure off him and you've got to run the football, and so they have to get
06:37
better at that.
06:38
For that reason, Kansas State, which I think is going to be – I think they're now going
06:42
to give Utah that run for their money in the conference, and they'll beat Colorado this
06:46
week.
06:47
Yeah, I'm with you.
06:48
I'm with you here as well, Coach.
06:50
Florida going to Tennessee.
06:51
Tennessee – I had Arkansas last week in Fayetteville getting 14.
06:55
I think Tennessee gets right at home in Knoxville against the Gators.
07:00
Well, you know, if they're going to get right, they need to get their mojo back.
07:03
They've got to go back to being what Josh Heupel is.
07:06
He's a vertical passing game coach.
07:08
Everybody thinks he's a run-first-throw-second because he runs so much, but he runs so much
07:12
because people are already playing the pass by the time the first play starts, but if
07:16
he doesn't hit more vertical passes, that's what they lack, the vertical passing game
07:20
to back the safeties off.
07:22
He runs the inside zone.
07:23
It doesn't work unless you get the safeties out of there, and you've got to throw deep,
07:26
But when they're at home and they're comfortable, I think that's where they're playing best.
07:30
To me, there's no question at home they're going to win this football game.
07:33
I'm not quite ready yet until I see the quarterback play with a little more consistency on his
07:37
passing game to say they're going to beat the spread.
07:40
So last week, I had UCLA in 28-and-a-half at Happy Valley, and they covered UCLA lost
07:47
whatever, 27-10.
07:49
Do you think Penn State handles their business at the Coliseum against USC, who's lost a
07:55
couple of games?
07:56
Yes, I do.
07:57
I think Penn State will go out there and do what they, you know, they've been like the
08:00
third person at the Big Ten.
08:04
There's Ohio State, there's Michigan, and then there's Penn State.
08:06
They're 5-0 every year, and then they lose a game they're supposed to.
08:09
Well, they've got a very, very good team this year.
08:11
They're solid, and I think this is a perfect opportunity.
08:13
Southern Cal is playing below the standard they thought they were going to be when the
08:17
season began, and I like the talent and the physicality of Penn State, and I think they
08:22
go out there, and they beat against the spread.
08:24
They win the game, and they beat USC out there on the West Coast.
08:27
Does Arizona have a shot in Provo against a 5-0 BYU team laying three?
08:33
I'm sorry, I didn't hear you.
08:34
Who was that now?
08:36
Do you think Arizona can give BYU a game in Provo?
08:41
I don't think so.
08:42
I think BYU gets that one.
08:44
I think they've got a little stronger team.
08:45
Arizona is picked pretty high.
08:47
They've been hot and cold, so again, it's a matter if they get hot, but I do believe
08:50
I'd go with BYU.
08:52
And 20 seconds, Iowa State's in Morgantown against the Mountaineers.
08:57
Do you think that'll be a good game?
08:58
You know, I'm a Mountaineer.
08:59
I did play for the Mountaineers, or at least I sat on that bench for the Mountaineers.
09:03
I was a tailback.
09:04
Every time I'd go on the field, my dad would tell me to get my tail back on the bench.
09:07
That being said, I have a hard time.
09:11
I'd love to see West Virginia win, but I think this team is just too strong, and that the
09:15
old Mountaineer field is going to be one where they have to take a loss.
