Hello, and welcome to the Met Office forecast for the week ahead. It's a grey and damp Monday
00:05
out there for many of us, so let's start with something a bit more cheerful. Most places
00:10
will be fine again by the weekend, but first, a few days of breezy and often cloudy wet
00:18
weather to get through, certainly Wednesday, Thursday and the start of Friday. Monday's
00:24
area of low pressure there sitting over the UK and quite the line up in the Atlantic.
00:30
You can see this low ex-hurricane Dorian and this tropical storm Gabrielle. That's arriving
00:36
on Thursday. This is arriving on Wednesday, but don't get too excited because by then
00:41
there'll be no more than your common or garden Atlantic low pressure system bringing some
00:47
wind and rain, but nothing out of the ordinary for the UK at this time of year. And in fact,
00:51
ahead of them, area of high pressure building in behind Monday's weather front and many
00:56
places seeing a dry start to Tuesday, but a lot of cloud remaining, one or two showers.
01:01
A few more showers will develop through the day on Tuesday across central and southern
01:05
parts of Britain, but otherwise you can see long spells of sunshine actually for much
01:09
of Scotland, northern England, Wales and the southwest. Light winds, that'll make the sunshine
01:16
feel pleasant enough. High teens, perhaps 21 Celsius in the southeast, but the wind
01:20
picking up there in the west of Scotland and northern Ireland. And this is ex-hurricane
01:25
Dorian. But by this stage, just an area of low pressure, fairly typical for the time
01:30
of year, sending its weather fronts across the country. Having said that, parts of northern
01:35
and western Scotland will have coastal gales on Tuesday night into the start of Wednesday
01:38
and it will be blustery as the way rain in the northwest sweeps into northern England
01:44
for the very start of Wednesday. Some strong wind gusts to watch out for if you're travelling,
01:48
say, over the Pennines. But that all sweeps southwards and by this stage, the cold front
01:54
fragmenting and dying. And it's just an area of cloud across southern counties of England.
01:59
Grey skies for Wednesday afternoon here, brighter skies further north. And with some tropical
02:04
humidity there, temperatures managing to reach 21 or 22 in the wake of this weather front
02:10
as the skies brighten. Blustery showers though into Scotland and northern Ireland, feeling
02:14
cooler here. But we've got another system coming our way for the end of Wednesday into
02:20
Thursday. This is Tropical Storm Gabrielle. Again, just like Dorian, it's just going to
02:25
transform into an area of low pressure. But the important thing about this, this is why
02:30
it's significant that it's a tropical storm, it contains a lot of humidity. You can see
02:33
the red colours there and that means that as it approaches the UK, it brings with it
02:39
areas of cloud and outbreaks of rain. In fact, very grey skies to start the day for western
02:43
Britain, areas of sea fog and hill fog across western shores and higher ground areas. And
02:50
some wet weather there for western Scotland and northern Ireland for Thursday morning.
02:55
And that rain then topples into northern England and Wales for Thursday afternoon. Behind that,
03:01
showers pushing into Scotland and northern Ireland, a fresh breeze once again. For central
03:07
and southeastern parts of England meanwhile, well sheltered from that area of rainfall.
03:13
And with some brighter skies and that tropical humidity, well temperatures approaching the
03:18
mid-twenties by this stage. So actually fairly warm and bright in the southeast, but yeah
03:24
pretty wet and grey further north and west for much of the day. Cold front meanwhile
03:29
sweeps away that relative warmth, heading into Thursday night and Friday. But in the
03:35
wake of this, a ridge of high pressure builds in across much of the UK, helping to settle
03:40
the weather down for Friday. We've still got some remaining low cloud and mistiness
03:45
to start off on Friday across southern areas. A fresh bright start elsewhere and plenty
03:50
of sunshine developing across large parts of the country. Still got a few more blustery
03:55
showers for parts of Scotland and northern Ireland on Friday, feeling cool here. We retain
04:01
some warmth there further south, 19 to 21 Celsius and feeling pleasant with light winds,
04:06
plenty of sunshine. Meanwhile, the jet stream is going to start to change position and change
04:12
shape heading into the weekend. Here's how it looks on Thursday. You can see a direct
04:17
track across the Atlantic, bringing these areas of low pressure towards us. But as we
04:22
head towards the end of the week, a dig of cold air way out west will actually help to
04:28
amplify the jet stream, pushing it south over the West Atlantic and that helps to nudge
04:33
it north out towards our way. And that means that low pressure systems, rather than running
04:39
across the UK, will be directed northwards into Iceland. Still some uncertainty heading
04:45
into the weekend about exactly how far north these low pressure systems will start to move.
04:50
Certainly, the storm track will be further north, but they could still affect northern
04:54
parts of Scotland at times. Meanwhile, further south, high pressure builds in and it's going
05:00
to turn much more settled. So, mixed conditions for the weekend in the far north, otherwise
05:05
largely fine. Plenty of sunny spells. Warm days, but under clear skies the nights will
05:12
be fairly chilly. A few misty mornings as well. Autumn, of course, is on its way. Now,
05:18
you can find all the very latest by following us on social media and keep up to date with
05:22
the weather via the Met Office app. Bye bye.
