EU to allocate €14 million help Canary Islands host migrants

The funds will come from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as part of a joint operation launched with Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency.

00:00The European Union is set to allocate 14 million euros to the Canary Islands to improve their

00:07ability to accommodate migrants.

00:11The funds will also be used to strengthen support for unaccompanied migrant children

00:16and teenagers, many of whom lost their parents during the perilous boat journey from West

00:21Africa.

00:23EU Commissioner Margaritis Skinas made the announcement while on a visit to the islands,

00:29where he met with President Fernando Clavijo Batlle.

00:33Skinas highlighted the enormous pressure faced by Canarian institutions in the face of the

00:38growing crisis, while Batlle added that Skinas had spoken of unity and solidarity during

00:44their meeting.

00:48Between January and August of this year, the Canary Islands have recorded the arrival of

00:5222,300 migrants, a number which is expected to increase in the coming months.
