00:00Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suffered a major political blow on Wednesday
00:05after a key partner in his coalition quit government.
00:09The far-right ultra-Orthodox Shaz party's surprise withdrawal leaves Netanyahu,
00:13whose domestic support has been waning, with a minority in parliament.
00:17Shaz, who has long served as a kingmaker in Israeli politics,
00:20said it would be leaving over disagreements surrounding a proposed law
00:24that would mandate military service for all.
00:27Ultra-Orthodox men were granted exemptions from compulsory service
00:30via a decades-old arrangement by Israel's first Prime Minister, David Ben-Gurion.
00:35It's the second ultra-Orthodox party to quit government this week
00:38after United Torah Judaism announced it was leaving on Tuesday.
00:42Shaz ministers are expected to resign from their positions on Thursday morning.
00:47The party's leader, Arya Derry, did however note that it would not undermine Netanyahu's coalition from the outside
00:53and could still vote with it on some legislation.
00:56The announcement comes shortly before the Knesset goes into summer recess,
01:00set to begin on July 27th.
